ya obv 2011 basically killed me as a sports fan, and the Benning era has done the rest

like imagine mustering up any ****s about this ****...

they're going to be trash until Benning is gone, and that might not be a while because the owner is also a complete ****ing idiot

always fun to go from being the best team in the league to the worst, good times

the weird thing about the Wings is how they overpayed a bunch of guys who were never really any good to begin with

obv it's something that historically they wouldn't gaf about, but i hope this sort of marks a new era where they cut that stuff out of the game

i mean he got the first boarding hit from behind in (which may have injured him in the first place), but still needs to "finish his check" by throwing the guy to the ice? gtfo

if like 0.3 second late hits aren't allowed, then "finishing your check" like that shouldn't either, as it's a wayyy late "hit"

the league needs stars like Pettersson somewhat more than they need pointless intent to injure plays

It is depressing to watch the slow fade. Kings haven't been good the last 2 years, and can't / won't for at least another 2-3 when bad contracts start to expire.

Canucks win at Tampa, at Florida, and at Pittsburgh

3 year in a row they've luckboxed a good start iirc, really wish they'd stop doing this

McDavid has a point in each of Edmonton's 9 goals this season. Oilers would suck so bad without him.

well they suck with him, so yeah

So uhh....are we gonna see players hitting milestones this year like:

-50 in 50
-60+ goals
-130+ pts

Because my body is ready for that to be a thing again. I'm that old (as are many of you). I watched 99 get his 200+ pt seasons, and although I don't want that era back with the hilarious goalies, I'm ready for this pace to continue!

I was in the car when Edmonton scored 4 goals.

So frustrating. I’m not sure I can bring myself to watch that.

**** me. This could go south.

Here are ideas for a couple of TV shows I would watch.

Game Tape. I’m not sure exactly what form this would take, but definitely coaches using recent footage explaining strategies and counter-strategies, pointing out trends, following as seasons evolve. Like hockey school for fans.

Watch a Game with... Re-watch a game from the last week while someone, possibly with a few beers, comments on the game, maybe adding some isolations and replays. Like a directors commentary or Mystery Science Theatre meets Playing Lessons from a Pro.

Watch a Game with... I like this idea more as I think about it.

First you record the guy watching the game, then he watches himself and makes corrections and you figure out what to replay and what to highlight. You can bring in any camera angle. You could sometimes predominantly use alternate angles.

It could go in a lot of directions. You would mostly want coaches and players doing it, but you could do it with one hockey person and a celebrity or just have someone knowledgable figure out the video content and let that explain the important stuff.

But you could also do it with a cameraman, a soundman or a video producer.

Streaming celebrity, former athlete, insider, etc. running game commentary should be a thing. Potential to be a million times better than current broadcasts. Joe rogan makes 'fight companion' podcasts of him and friends watching mma cards that people could sync up to fight cards. Of course the quality depends on interesting people being entertaining as well as informative.

not really what you're talking about, but it reminded me of this Ken Dryden series from way back. this 1st ep just covers a regular season game, Oilers @ Habs, in 1989. haven't seen the bulk of the series, but what i have seen is pretty good.

would also like some more technical options in sports viewing, but broadcasters seem to have convinced themselves that the public at large very much does not. maybe the nhl will do something like that through their network eventually, they should. anyone doing breakdowns like that somewhere on the internet? you would think so, but...

Mathews 12/1 to win the Hart. East Coast bias + Canada/Toronto media + great offensive team = $$$

That’s pretty good. Ken Dryden is such a good writer. It’s poetic and shows you something about the psychology.

I love all the cameras. That’s great storytelling.

I would like something more technical.

There's a lot to say about the commercials, like who wears an apron to serve microwaved oatmeal? The Topaz had no positive associated adjectives.

Thanks Raf for the link, got a grin from ear to ear!

Would be interested in a show where coaches disected games, and yea some alternative play-by-plays and commentary from people who know their stuff would be great. Theres no such thing on twitch or what the hell the kids use? Once watched Andy Roddick comment on tennis on twitter and was great.

Jersey prolly not gonna roll through the league all season, but gotta be on of the top-coached teams? Relentless skating too, fun to see if they and habs can keep that up. Oh and Minny vs Car was lol how much faster car was playing.

I always wanted to make a youtube sports highlight channel where it's a bit like Bill Burr. Kind of more jokes and cursing over game highlights.

I'd mostly enjoy if announcers just stayed quiet more. Neither baseball nor hockey announcers seem to have noticed that they're not on the radio anymore and thus don't have to describe every single thing that's happening. Do away with play-by-play.

No. They have some good wheels so they may not be quite as bad as I thought (I thought they were a lock for bottom 5) but they still are no where near good. Offensive touch as a team is horrible, no chance they make they playoffs.

Fun watch. Some things really stand out:

Video quality - my god, it looks like it was filmed underwater.

Rule changes - The amount of hooking, holding, general interference is just
mind boggling. You think "How the hell did they score so
much with that going on?"

The goalies - Oh right....that's how. So small, so deep in the net.

Mcdavid needs 350 points for the Oilers to make the playoffs

Yes, same in soccer for my feeds as well. Would much prefer if they talked less and then would have some great commentators. But guess TV audience wants the name of the player shouted out everytime.

Exaggeration...playoff teams mostly score about 260-270+ goals. He only needs 260-270+ points

I think he thoughtfully considered the state of Edmonton's defense when making that estimate.

Definitely, have made that exact argument myself in the past

Best broadcasts are the international soccer tournaments where they use a lone announcer
They tend to control the broadcast well, let things breathe
Think baseball had that in the past, but it kinda died with Vin Scully afaik
99% of commentators/analysts do nothing for me, huge net negatives actually

Broadcasts without announcers at all might even be an improvement
Experienced that a few years back when there was a strike and it was actually pretty great
