If the Habs had at least some young player having a good start to the season so I could be excited about something.
Will be interesting if Yakupov finally decided to live up to his potential. Good start. MacKinnon also very quiet in the last few seasons. They are still very young.
The Devils seem to have a fun start as well. Even if they dont keep that up they probably have a nice foundation for the future.
Toronto seems crazy. But well we have grit at least.

There was reams of paper written about whether he'd ever gotten a fair shake in Edmonton in terms of quality linemates - from one source:

"Since joining the league, Yakupov's five most common centermen at 5v5 have been Sam Gagner (596:14), Derek Roy (534:15), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (426:05), Mark Arcobello (296.34) and Mark Letestu (215:51)."

Those who believe it (which to some extent include myself) fully expect that now that he's off to a good start, Duchene will be traded and his next centreman will be Soderberg or something.

The date was December 10, 2001.

The Canucks were just a year and a half removed from the Mark Messier era. The West Coast Express line was still a month away from taking off.

After making the playoffs for the first time in five years the season prior, the Canucks were off to a rough start.

Dan Cloutier was a young unproven goaltender, and cult hero Bob Essensa was no longer with the team. The Sedins were in their second season. Todd Bertuzzi missed 10 games because of a suspension. Under head coach Marc Crawford, now in his fourth season with the team, the Canucks were 12-17-3 and quickly falling out of playoff contention.

They were playing the Tampa Bay Lightning, who would go on to miss the playoffs for the sixth year in a row.

That was the last time Rogers Arena hosted a Canucks regular season game to a crowd of less than 16,000 people.

Until Thursday night.

The Canucks and Winnipeg Jets played in front of a disappointing crowd at Rogers Arena on Thursday night, with an official attendance listed at just 15,589. That’s the lowest since December 10, 2001, when just 15,370 showed up to the rink.

To make matters worse, a significant portion of the crowd on Thursday were Jets fans.

This could be just the tip of the iceberg for the Canucks, unless they do something to excite the fanbase. Opening night against the Edmonton Oilers was officially listed as a sellout (18,865), though many tickets were available on the afternoon of the game. The second game of the season drew 17,273 for Alex Burrows’ return to Vancouver.

It’s been nearly three years since the Canucks’ sellout streak officially came to an end. The streak started in 2002, lasting 12 years and 474 games.

A problem when the building sells out for so long is that there is a generation of kids who never go to a game.

I get how you don't want to go when they are losing, after so many years of being bored of winning.

I know a lot of people turned off after the playoff run.

Is it simply the dismal management?

  • the team was 29th last season, 28th the season before, are supposedly rebuilding but didn't have a single rookie in the lineup the first 2 games of the season. they're just old, bad, and boring. what reason is there to watch this team, really? the sad decline of the Sedins? overrated Bo Horvat? much better to just stay home and watch on tv, if anything.
  • they said ticket prices stayed about the same for this season, but that some of the expensive tickets went up, and cheap seats down. saw some chatter before the season opener that the upper bowl was sold out but there were lots available downstairs. they'll probably continue to struggle to sell the expensive ones this year. like who would buy those, and why?
  • Sutter & Dorsett led the forwards in 5v5 ice time last night. would you pay to see that? people aren't stupid, apparently.

Ya there's really no reason to pay money for a nucks game. The old sell wins or sell hope saying rings true, at least in leagues without promotion and relegation.

the Avs' leading scorer, sven andrighetto, was traded by Bergevin for ANDREAS MARTINSEN, who is now in the AHL

andrighetto, meanwhile, has more pts than the habs have goals

Weber and his laughable albatross contract: 0g, 1a
Subban: 1g, 6a.

But hey, habs are focused on winning now so that doesn't matter.
Grit, toughness, etc. Also don't have to put up with Subban not being mad enough when they lose. Whew.

72o, I recall you laughing pretty hard at the Jake Debrusk pick when the Bruins made it. Man he's looking good in the bigs right now. I have no idea if Zboril or Senyshyn will turn into players. But Debrusk who was drafted in that 13-14-15 group in 2015 over Barzal and Connor looks good.

And over Chabot. You probably haven't watched a lot of Barzal so far then. DeBrusk looked good tough.

DeBrusk is perfect. Good enough to be a solid contributor but not talented enough to become uppity and get traded. Great pick.

I think my only beef with that pick and it remains a beef:

If you like Debrusk and you have any ideas how drafts work, let someone trade up for that spot, take Barzal, and you get Debrusk in the 20's. But hey, we got'm, that's the most important.

Fleury placed on IR.(concussion) I guess LGN will have to wait til next year for the Cup. Marchessault out as well.

Met Howie Meeker yesterday. 93 and still going strong. Told me he had been trying to wash the Leaf logo off his ass for 40 years. Now he doesn't have to anymore.
Also, the little guy has got some big mitts!
