wow, MacLellan not writing Trotz a blank cheque a pretty good sign he's not gonna go that donk thing where the GM brings everyone back for a raise

seems to be doing a decent job, outside of losing Schmidt for nothing

Still a huge donk move. Their chances at a cup next year certainly went down. How much? That could be debated till the end of time but through familiarity, trust and system there is no way in hell they went up. Also sets a bad precedent within the organization and out of it, that no matter how good a job you do they will still **** you in the ass if and when it suits them. Who would want to work for ****ers like that? If they win the Cup next year I will take it all back but that ain't happening, book it.

nah

they almost fired him during the season (bc he's an average coach at best)
then they run hot in the playoffs and shipped
he wanted like 25/5, which would have locked them into him for another ~3.5 years
so then what happens when they're like 23rd in score-adjusted corsi again next season?

hire someone else, it doesn't really matter
no coach is worth that much money, and Coach Pumpkinhead is just another dude basically
let the Islanders or whoever break the bank for him

No. First, it wasn’t a “move” by the team. He had a contract for two more years and he chose to terminate it. They made offers for a new deal, and they weren’t accepted. So the only move by the team was to not give in to a 5x5 demand, which was ludicrous for this guy.

Trotz is going to get his 5 X $5M money or damn close. When he does, the Caps will come off as cheap, petty and very likely wrong in their choice to not give him market money. He's far from out of line.

Hoffman now traded to the panthers, lol

About two hours later, Hoffman was traded again, this time going from San Jose to Florida along with a 2018 seventh-round pick for the Panthers' picks in the second, fourth and fifth rounds in 2018.

So SJ turns a large contract they don't really want and a prospect into a prospect, a 2nd, and 2 later picks. Depending on prospect quality, that's a home run.
How does Ott not want a 2nd, 4th and 5th for Hoffman? I guess Boedker is window dressing for how little they got for him.

The rumor is that Dorian was charging a premium for trading him to a rival in Florida. So, instead, he received less, and made his rival pay less. The question of whether to give Colorado the fourth overall pick this year just got even more interesting (I believe they should).

The commonly held belief that you can be a great GM if you just continually call the bad GMs over and over holds true once again.

Sharks have to be planning a monster pitch for Tavares now.

It’s cool how Hoffman’s girlfriend has ruined his value as a player and the way he will be looked at as a person. What a total moron he must be to keep her around.

Bit of a weird take imo. She's changed the way he's viewed as a person because she's (involuntarily) made public what kind of person he is. It's not like he's treated unfairly, or does anyone think he only got wind of this when the rest of us did? Seems like a ~lock that he's almost as much of a ****stain as his gf.

Re: NHL Offseason 2018: Sponsored, once again, by Canadian Fail

also, if i'm the Sens, pretty sure i'd keep the #4 pick this year

like even if they're complete trash and go FULL SABRES next season, they have what, like a 20% chance of getting the Jack Hughes pick?
you're gonna throw away a #4 pick for that?
come on

take Tkachuk/Zadina/Hughes or whoever
actually, i might try to trade down if i'm them
staple Bobby Ryan to Karlsson and trade them for max value
sign some players to reach the salary floor
run the kids out there and #yolo next season
even if you suck it's likely you'll fall in the lottery

i guess the other thing they might do is try to work the Karlsson trade with the Avs for that pick, but i can't see them taking Bobby Ryan, or winning that trade really (bc Karlsson might not want to sign there), so idk

As a non-Ottawa team I'd think long and hard before trading nothing for Karlsson+Ryan. Sens might be better off eating the Ryan deal (they're gonna suck for at least three years) but Melnyk probably won't.

Re: NHL Offseason 2018: Sponsored, once again, by Canadian Fail

Sens fun facts:

- Stone, Duchene, Gaborik, MacArthur, Boedker, Smith, Pageau, Burrows, Dzingel, Ceci, Borowiecki, Chabot, Claesson, Harpur, Anderson, Condon + prospects & filler is about a salary floor team
- Bobby Ryan has 7.25x4 left on his contract
- Boedker has 4x2 left on his contract
- Gaborik has 4.9x3 left on his contract
- if they trade Karlsson at the draft, Dion Phaneuf's retained salary will be their highest paid dman
- they have an extra 1st from the Pens this year, but traded away their 2nd & 3rd

This makes no sense.

If they do give up the pick this year, and then go full sabres, they will have some chance at Hughes next year, and at worst have the #4 pick next year.

If they keep the pick, they will have #4 this year, and lose either #1/#2/#3/#4 next year.

Zadina/Hughes are not such dead certain locks that they are clearly better than what you'd get at #4 next year, and to give up your shot at 1/2/3, they'd better be.

IMO it's an easy choice, unless you plan to try to be competitive this year, and I don't see how that's a realistic idea.

you realize that they aren't guaranteed to finish 31st next season, right?
what if they finish 30th? what if they finish 29th? etc
stranger things have happened

also, no one would ever trade #4 now for #2-4 next year

Yup, this is the problem with not committing fully to a rebuild. Like, what exactly is the point of bringing Boedeker in? Let's just say he surpasses expectations and scores 20g/40p next year...so what? We'll still be among the worst teams in the league. Some of the dummies on Ottawa radio have been like, "Well, you need to dress a team! Can't dress a lineup of 15 guys." Ok, so trade Hoff for multiple picks and then sign some ok UFA trying to stay in the league to a one-year deal. Best case scenario: he has a good season and you flip him for a pick at the deadline (a la Toronto a few years ago). Worst case scenario: He's bad, but the team already sucks so who really cares. He's not signed longterm so who gives a ****.

I dunno, it's been rumoured that Dorion wants a roster player as part of the deal for Karlsson as well. Like, are we really going to give up a shot at an A prospect so we can take an ok vet that will be gone by the time the rebuild is over and we're ready to contend again? They're so shortsighted in their approach.

Yeah, I don't believe this at all and it's not consistent with how this management group has done business in the past. A few years ago they traded Robyn Lehner (who at one point they thought of as a future legit #1) to Buffalo, and obviously they did the Phaneuf deal with Toronto.

From what I understand, they couldn't get a deal done with Florida because they wanted a roster player, which is probably stupider than not wanting to trade because they don't want to trade within the division.
