Owners and players can opt out of the current CBA in 2021 right? So Caps fans only need to endure half of the contract before he gets a compliance buyout.

Both the owners and NHLPA can choose to opt out after 8 years.

The NHL can opt out by Sept. 1, 2019.

If the owners/NHL do not opt out, the NHLPA can opt out by Sept. 19, 2019.

I think the opt outs would take effect after the 2019-2020 season? So that would mean that these 8 seasons would have been played

and as Jonathan Willis pointed out on twitter, Darnell Nurse is a decent comp, so i don't see why he won't get a similar contract from Chiapet

Sekera: 5.5 x 3
Klefbom: 4.17 x 5
Larsson: 4.17 x 3
Russell: 4 x 3

Nurse: ~5.25 x 6 ???

so LOiLers fans got that to look forward to...

edit: Nurse isn't arb eligible, so he should come in at something lower
but it's Chiapet, so...

Not a fan of the skjei deal. Too long, too much aav, he was playing protected minutes with a high zone start, his ceiling is a low end-average 1st pairing dman, and he might block a future roster spot from our defense prospects

Nurse's agent:

"They’ve sent us a proposal and we’ll see where that goes,” said Nurse's agent, Anton Thun, to The Sun. “I don’t see with their cap space being what it is that they can entice us with much term."

Ways they could have afforded to sign Nurse now (speaking only of moves that looked insane immediately rather than only in hindsight):

1) Don't sign Russell (4M)
2) Don't buyout Pouliot (1.3M)
3) Don't buyout Gryba (0.3M)
4) Don't sign unproven backup goalie (2.5M)
5) Fire Lucic into sun (6M)

How he's screwed this team and still has a job is unfathomable.

Edmonton should just tank for three years and go all in for the 2021-22 season. McD and Draisaitl will still only be 24 and 25, and their garbage defense contracts come off the books.

But they'll probably make things worse trying to fix it in the short term. "No, no, dig UP, stupid!"
