Of course they do - being elite now certainly is valuable. Retiring is not the only issue - basically every player in this draft by virtue of aging, etc will not be as strong in 10 years as they are today. I don't want to tell anybody how to draft, so I'll leave it at this - think of this as a league-wide re-draft over a long-term window.

Yes. Your team will be judged based on its ability to compete over a 10-year horizon, but you can build your team however you'd like.

Wouldn't mind hearing more about this. Also how do we determine if/when player X at 35 years of age will retire? Is it at 36,39,42 etc.?

Cool maybe a mod can remove that post about it being a 5 year. I planned based on that.

You'll have to argue based on a number of factors (their arc up to that point, playing style, position, etc) how long you think he'll be effective.

Look, you guys are getting a bit too caught up in the 10 years! idea. This is a very long-term dynasty - attrition will happen.

hopefully you can recover in time by pick 25

Pick 6

I select C John Tavares, elite centre, only 23 years old, very durable so far. Nobrainer here imo

yeah Doty was alright, mostly just trying to create some discussion

yes snarky bc you got all indignant about the change from 5 years to 10, which you would have saw if you followed the discussion before we started, and acted as though it irreversibly altered your strategy here. meanwhile you broke cardinal draft rule #1 of talking about undrafted players, which doesn't need to be said, but was anyway like 3 times itt. also i had already changed what you were bitching about.

Pick 7

Was going to take Tavares, & there seem to be 2 or 3 safe picks, but I will go ahead & draft someone I never heard of:

Strengths:

Former #1 overall pick
Explosive athleticism
Improvement every year in the league
Positive plus/minus on a mediocre team
Potential to be super-duper elite all the way through season 10
21 years old
Canadian
WIM

Weaknesses:

Plays too hard

JM3 proudly selects

Spoiler:
LW Taylor Hall

Ridicule away

Round 1, Pick #4*

Spoiler:

Team Nootka is happy to select Jonathan Toews.

Crosby and Stamkos were locks to be taken before me, but I was happy to see ‘nut homer it up and leave the next best center to me. Toews crushes even strength: his 3.19 pts/60 was good for third best in the league, despite facing relatively tough competition. He also dominates in puck possession (59% Fenwick this past season) and on the dot (59.9%). His scoring and possession rates have been consistently elite, and are continuing to climb:

Oh yeah, and all he does is win. Only 25, and he’s already led his teams to two Cups (once while picking up the Conn Smythe), and more gold medals for Canada than anyone can keep track of. All. Because. Of. Him.

Toews turned 25 in April, so I’ll be set at 1C for a long time.

*Thanks for posting my pick Hold'em.

Hall probably a little too high, but he has a chance to become the league's premier goal scorer

durability is a huge concern with him too imo, think he's always gonna get banged up

Okay boys, there seems to be a good deal of confusion here and I'm going to make another adjustment that I think will make things smoother.

The draft is now only 16 rounds, and the pool has been opened up to allow all players recently drafted by NHL teams. So any player still in juniors/the AHL/college/Europe is now eligible if they have been drafted.

Well this seems like an obv pick to me...

I'm going to take the best defenseman in this format...

Already a Norris trophy winner at the ripe age of 22 and was on his way to a second had it not been for that [undrafted] pos. Nearly averaging a ppg on the blueline the past 2 years and his defense has improved as well.

I select...

Erik karlsson - d (23 years old)

Brad Doty wasn't spewage, but he wouldn't have been my first pick for D.

I had it as

1. Crosby
2. Stamkos
3. Toews
4. Karlsson

and then a toss up between Malkin, Tavares, Hall and a couple of others.

Last edited by Nootka; 07-08-2013 at 11:39 AM. Reason: edit: yeah, Karlsson it was

I give the thumbs up to the additions that Grind has made - 20 players is too long for a dynasty draft, and while there's some uncertainty about prospects, you have to make your argument using comparables.

i would prefer 20-26 rounds (full 20-man team, the a prospect pool of 3-6), but i'm prob like one of ten ppl who'd see it out, so it's likely not realistic

Grind's changes reflected in OP, if you want to re-write everything so that it's clearer, then ship it to me and i'll update it

well if he wasn't your top D, or in your top 8-10 or whatever, then it's kinda spewy

and that's what i was hyperbolically trying to say

Counter-argument: Hall played 94% of his team's games this year. He's still only 21 & learning how to play in a manner that will allow him to remain on the ice fulltime. The jump in competition to the NHL is tough, & his breakneck style took some adapting when faced with bigger, stronger, faster opponents than he had previously faced.

Hall is probably the top winger in this format though. Injuries would be the one issue I'd have but he is going to be legitimately great.
