Lol you start to have to put him alongside some elite goalie names. I don't even know how I'm typing that. Because it's not like a Kunitz thing. You can't Kunitz yourself as a goalie. A few really bad games and you don't get to keep Kunitz'ing. Osgood wasn't a Kunitz, even if some tried to say that. He played well when he needed to.
Fleury has been on some winning teams, but he has never been consistently good or great. As we all know, for most of his career he could make the great save, but also let in far too many weak goals.
On one of the talk shows Corey Hirsch was explaining that Fleury's new goaltending coach has worked with him to be more fundamentally sound and less active in the net. I guess Fleury was a bit impatient in the net and would often react (or overreact) before the shooter (and the other teams knew that). His new coach has worked lots on positioning, angles, etc and waiting out the shooter.
Sorry if that was awkward, but I think I know what he was getting at. Even in my beer league hockey I know the goalies that are going to maintain their positions/angles and the closer you get to them the less net you have to see. They are not going to make the first move. There are other goalies that like to move lots and challenge you, but at the NHL level that just creates an opportunity for the shooters, and they don't miss much.
So, perhaps what we are seeing in Fleury now is a technically better goalie, but one who is still very quick and athletic with good instincts when things go crazy around the net. Maybe that is why he is giving up less very soft goals, and still making great saves.
