Watch Benning try to take credit for this.

the much greater concern is that he'll light it on fire like he does with half his other picks, especially the ones he picks up from elsewhere

Re: NHL 2017 Offseason Thread - Carolina Reigns, Welcome Red Wings

Shawn Thornton retires and gets a front office job with the Panthers, who might also be looking to add Chris Pronger.

people sometimes wonder why this league has some of the dumbest logic and backwards ass retrograde thinking, and it's because when worthless, dumbass, pos GOCBs like Thornton and Steve Ott retire, they're instantly handed jobs as stewards of the league going forward, and the cycle of trash continues.

can't wait to see the Panthers' analytics team try to work with their newest comrades...
(if they haven't already been removed in Tallon's purge)

"hey should we listen to what this NERD who has spent literally thousands of hours studying the game has to say?"
"nah man, Shawn Thornton actually PLAYED THE GAME [at 4 minutes per night, with 19 spent in the penalty box], so the floor is his!"

can't wait for them to make their Subban for Weber deal...

Last edited by 72off; 06-01-2017 at 03:15 PM. Reason: yes i see that Thornton is supposedly headed to the business side, point is that all the jobs seem to go to these poss

Story yesterday that he's looking to move up in the draft. Can't wait until he sells the farm to move up a spot or two in a weaker draft.

ya i was gonna say news today about how all of the top-3 might be looking to trade out/down...

http://nhl.nbcsports.com/2017/06/02/...t-all-in-play/

Quote:
• In an interview with TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, Devils GM Ray Shero acknowledged he’s received calls about the No. 1 overall selection.
“I’ve had some inquiries,” Shero said. “We’re more focused on the player we’re going to pick but, again, we’ll see what happens over the next few weeks.”

• While at the NHL’s scouting combine in Buffalo, Flyers GM Ron Hextall admitted he too has taken calls about the second pick.
“I’ve had some talks. I’ll just leave it at that,” Hextall said, per Philly.com. “We’re going to listen because if people want to talk, I’d be doing a disservice not to listen.”

• It’s been widely reported that Stars GM Jim Nill is shopping the No. 3 selection.
Mostly because Nill came out and said as much.

“I have talked to other teams already about possibly moving that pick, getting an established player back,” he told SiriusXM’s NHL Network Radio last month, per NHL.com. “It gives us lot of options. I think this will heat up more as we go.”

On Thursday, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported that Dallas and Vancouver have had discussions about the third pick. That’s interesting, given the Canucks already hold the No. 5.
...but i don't really buy it. the Devils might have the least talent in the league, so they'd be pretty foolish to not just sit there and give themselves a 15-year building block in Nolan or Nico. Flyers have more talent, but same thing basically. they could use another top-6 skill guy for their group.

Dallas i could see trading out of 3 though, as they're basically in win-now mode, and there's a steep dropoff after 2. the Stars need D, and the Canucks could offer Tanev or Edler, and take Lehtonen or Niemi off their hands. Canucks should be in FULL TANK mode anyway, so think it makes a lot of sense to reload with #3 & 5 this year. been talk about them trying to decide between taking a C or D, this way they can do both. they certainly need both.

I would think it takes considerably more than all of that to get the no.3 from Nill. Toss in a swap of 3 for 5 and you're closer to that possibly being a possibility.

i didn't mean to imply that's the done deal there, but lol @ something like Tanev & 5 for Niemi & 3 when there's not much difference from 3-12 or so in this draft

and buyout-saving cap dumps like Niemi/Lehtonen alone tend to get a good pick & prospect platter

No. I just suggested it would take more to pry the no. 3 from Nill. Again, all those other names were your ideas.

Pretty sure Benning came out last week and stated he wasn't interested in moving either anyways. Tanev's their best Dman and they already lost the big Russian kid recently. Full tank mode is one thing, discarding young[er] quality defensemen from your system is suicide.

I must be doing a poor job of trying to get my point across here. No big deal but this is twice now you've replied with an answer in part that didn't address my point.

I just suggested if the Stars were going to give up the 3rd overall...it was going to take more than the players you suggested. In terms of what gm's value, the difference between 3 and 12 is huge. A whole lot more than " not much difference".

And I never mentioned Edler being young. But by your reply, you made it sound as if I did. Was just a bit misleading. I never even brought up Edlers name. So when I said " discarding younger dmen from your system is suicide, the 2 guys I brought up, Tanev. (He's 27, their best current damn and not yet reached his prime, and Tryamkin, from the 2014 draft....with a huge upside, who just flew the coop back to Russia, I think that's hard for especially a guy like Benning to pull a trigger on. Especially with Juolevi not even stepping out on the NHL ice yet. Surely they could absorb Neimi's contract in a total rebuild, I would think if they were to lose Miller without resigning him, they'd want to see what they really have in Thatcher Demko or someone else in the system.

there is lots of stuff i don't reply to

sometimes i don't when i agree

could be

yes, and i thought that i was quite clear that i meant that the flatness of this draft means you can about the same caliber player at ~12 than you can at 3

no i don't expect Jim Nill to agree fully on the record, but i'm guessing it's a generally accepted opinion around the league

well Tanev isn't young, and Tryamkin is gone

so, what?

Demko is 21 and had a 907sv% in his 1st AHL season

games played by 21 or under goalies this season:
Jusse Saros - 21
Spencer Martin - 3
Eric Comrie - 1
Tristan Jarry - 1
Alex Nedeljkovic - 1

now is not the time for Demko to be thrown in behind a dumpster fire of a team

Niemi & Lehtonen both have 1 year remaining on their contract, and as such would make fine stopgaps for a horrible, tanking team

NHL.com released the fan voted top 10 greatest teams of all time, 84-85 Oilers #1

https://www.nhl.com/fans/nhl-centenn...test-nhl-teams

DGB made the top 10 teams of the salary cap era. 12-13 Hawks #1

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/g...alary-cap-era/

Gotta disagree with both. The 07-08 Wings maintained a a Fenwick just under 60% at score-adjusted even strength over an 82 game schedule, which is unheard of. That team has to be the clear GOAT.

2011 Canucks too low, on both lists

Quote:
Sedin - Sedin - Burrows
Raymond - Kesler - Samuelsson
Torres - Malhotra - Hansen
Glass - Bolduc - Tambellini
(added Higgins & Lapierre at the deadline)

Hamhuis - Bieksa
Edler - Salo
Ballard - Ehrhoff
(Rome, Alberts, Tanev)

Luongo
Schneider
it's actually kind of bizarre that team was as good as they were

peak Sedins + peak Kesler + very strong blueline + 82 games of elite goaltending + ... a bunch of role players really (though a lot of good defensive forwards) = all-time team? k

Quote:
With 117 points, the Canucks won the Presidents’ Trophy by double digits. Maybe more impressively, they led the league in goals scored, goals allowed and on the power play, while finishing third on the penalty kill and producing the season’s Art Ross winner. Given the league had had five more years to settle into the age of parity, you could make the case that the Canucks were even more dominant than the 2005-06 Red Wings.
just dominant

Quote:
They won 15 games, which is a number few teams ever get close to. But of course, you need 16 to win the Cup, and that’s why we’re not talking about the Canucks as the era’s best team. Their Game 7 loss to the Bruins, which came after they’d held series leads of 2-0 and 3-2, was about as heartbreaking as they come [...] This is the best team of the era to never win a Stanley Cup. In a way, maybe that’s even worse than never coming close at all.

Ya I have absolutely no problem admitting the nackz were a way better team than the Bruins that year. Goaltending tho

Also good to see the 09/10 Caps made the list, possibly the funnest team I've ever seen, especially when directly compared to the abnomation that were the Bruins that season. Last season of peak Ovi as dumb as it sounds. I might agree with ranking the 15/16 version above them due to goaltending alone but giving them more points for star power is lol

Re: NHL 2017 Offseason Thread - Carolina Reigns, Welcome Red Wings

team defense was a bigger problem than the goaltending imo
Bourdon died (would have been a pretty nice 24yo dman to have in 2011 iyam), Hamhuis got hurt in g1, Rome got suspended in g3 or 4, forced AHLberts into the lineup
some of the other guys were barely hanging on, Edler & Ehrhoff were significantly injured by the end iirc (ya, standard)

Thomas was a luckbox who ran pure, gg
(Canucks shooters were also awful, kept everything low for him)

couldn't get a foothold in Boston, which sucked bc iirc they were also the best road team that year
Lui was a little yippy tho ya, as he tended to be sometimes
Boston crowds were Smashville level good iirc

series still worked out accordingly to plan somewhat, but couldn't convert on all the PPs they were getting
(props to Chara, Bergeron, Thomas, etc i guess)

Re: NHL 2017 Offseason Thread - Carolina Reigns, Welcome Red Wings

Well if you listen to Boston sports radio, the real reason why Boston won was that SUGAR SHAWN Thornton replaced Seguin in the lineup for game 3 (lolol) and THREW HIS BODY AROUND

Forgot about the Hamhuis injury. Hip checks are bad, hmkay?

Thomas luckboxed hard but was still obv really good. Have to be to hold the nucks (or any team) to eight goals in a seven game series. Luongo gave up a bunch of softies but most came with the games already out of hand IIRC.
