ya, this is just so funny to look at, seems like it should be a fireable offense

luckily they were gifted the #3 pick to help mitigate their dumbass GM...

the only players the Canucks can lose are:
(assuming they protect the guys i think)

Luca Sbisa ($3.6M) - ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Derek Dorsett ($2.65M) - no no, please don't take him
Brendan Gaunce (RFA) - 0g/5a in 58gp ... he's a forward btw
Jason Megna ($675k) - 4g/4a in 55gp ... he's a forward btw
Joseph Cramarossa (RFA) - 4g/6a in 59 career games for this waiver claim ... he's a forward btw
Reid Boucher (RFA) - actually has a bit of skill so it'd kinda suck to lose him, but they got him off waivers, so no big deal really
Jack Skille (UFA) - 5g/4a in 55gp ... he's a forward btw
Michael Chaput (RFA) - 4g/4a in 68gp ... he's a forward btw
Alex Biega ($750k) - 5'10" 29yo AHL dman
Ryan Miller (UFA) - there are better, younger goalies to take who are under contract
Richard Bachman ($650k) - 5'11" 30yo AHL goalie

so Benning is telling the world that he's called Vegas and discussed giving them something so that he doesn't lose any of these ^ players. this is a thing that has happened. and he's telling ppl this. out loud. in public. to the media. why? what? why in the world? wut? huh? where am i? wtf

that list of players is literally the definition of sub-replacement level. the only one i'd care about at all is Boucher, and he was waived twice last year. so not even really.

mother of god.

Was Brendan Gaunce once one of those way overhyped grit heros on a Canada WJC team? Name rings a bell

ya he wasn't even good enough to be one of those bad 4th line WJ players lol

i think it's possible he could be a useful 4th line NHL player eventually, but losing him is really not something worth caring about

like just watch, Benning will give them like a 5th rounder to take [x], and they'll still get Boucher/Gaunce

Reading over some prospect reports at HF (lol), pretty amazing that PIMs are just a standard thing to list along with points and lolplusminus and seemingly regarded as a good thing.

It's not necessarily meant to be a good thing to have lots of PIMs, but it does tell you something about the nature of the player. But not always - sometimes "soft" skill players will get a lot of PIMs if they're defensively lazy and get a lot of slashing/hooking/tripping penalties as opposed to the "good" kind of PIMs that result from consistently playing on the edge and being generally physical. Alex Semin was a good example of the former.

I find it weird that PIMs aren't used as a real stat to analyse a player but on the complete other end of the spectrum. Being able to put up points without taking PIMs is a skill that produces wins

i blame O-Pee-Chee

and i guess we can blame Upper Deck for +/-

but tbf, those $tat$ probably tend to give you a reasonable player profile most of the time

It has been previously reported that Thornton wanted a three-year deal, and that remains the case. As for money, I would expect Thornton – who has taken hometown discounts in the past to stay in San Jose – to ask for at least $5 million per season, minimum. Our best guess here is that a Thornton-Sharks pre-July 1 agreement would probably look something like three years and somewhere between $15 – 17 million.
hmm, he turns 38 in July, coming off of a knee injury (MCL)

a 3-year commitment could be trouble if he can't stay healthy and/or the game keeps getting faster

Canucks in a similar spot with the Sedins, but not really bc the team is trash so who cares if they ain't what they was

Avs probably gonna hire Kyle Dubas from the Laffs. i guess someone over there finally realized that Joe Sakic has no business running a hockey team. the Avs will probably be a legit contender within 5 years if they let him run wild there. actually maybe faster than that, as he'll probably fly in and fleece people in trades involving Duchene, Landeskog, etc.

makes me sad & angry, as GM Ray Ferraro + AGM Kyle Dubas was about my dream scenario for the Canucks. of course LolBenning probably has another year or three left before these dumbass owners realizes that he's a complete donk (or sell the team), so it was always just a dream... *sigh*

LOiLers brought in those orange monstrosities 2 years ago to coincide with McBust, and now they're already shamelessly trying to bilk their idiot fans for another one (well they did give the 12th richest guy in the country a new rink sink-toilet, so might as well). gonna be a lot of shiny new Draisaitl sweaters around town iyam.

It's almost like the dumber the player the greater the chance he gets an NHL job after his career.

Real character guy that Steve Ott

Why are the Leafs letting Dubas go? Maybe he wants to run his own team but surely they can shower him with cash to stay.

The change to the Bruins jerseys better be minor. Though I wouldn't mind gold thirds. Flames, Avs, Jackets and Sens need a total overhaul

industry standard (across NA pro sports) seems to be that if a guy wants to leave for a move up, you let him

ya i'm sure the Leafs could make it worth his while if they really wanted to keep him (and i would, given that Lou isn't getting any younger), but they probably have no immediate plans to elevate him from the corner he's been shoved into, and who wouldn't want a shot at running their own team? think he passed on some interest last year, but the Avs are a decent spot with some nice pieces to work with, and they might give him some space to turn things around

Rumors just came out that Mark Hunter is next in line for the Leafs GM spot. Seems like it could have been born of that. Too bad would like to keep Dubas.

so i guess Dubas to the Avs isn't happening after all? whew! if so

30 THOUGHTS

1. The Kyle Dubas story with Colorado and Toronto is…strange. It’s a certainty that we were late to the story, that the window to hire him already closed before the Avalanche’s interest was reported. Remember, these two organizations worked together in 2013 to facilitate Masai Ujiri’s move from the Denver Nuggets to the Toronto Raptors. So, there is a history of co-operation between them. When we reached out to Colorado to let them know of the report, more than one person said I was wrong only to have other sources push back with the opposite information.

I don’t think anyone in the Avalanche organization was lying; those are honest people. I don’t think they knew, which makes you wonder exactly what Kroenke Sports had in mind. Without a full picture, the best guess is that someone wanted Dubas and targeted him specifically (the Maple Leafs would not comment). But it does sound like he had a very legitimate chance to get the job, only to have Toronto change its mind. That’s a bit of a surprise, since conventional wisdom is Mark Hunter surpassed him on the Lou Lamoriello succession list, whenever that will be.

The answers rest with Brendan Shanahan, who hired Dubas and remains a big fan. It’s also possible Colorado asked the NHL to intercede, but the league decided it was Toronto’s choice to make. This is one of those situations where we’re going to find the full truth somewhere down the road. Probably with multiple bottles of wine involved.

2. It has been hard to pinpoint Dubas’s future in Toronto. There have been rumours he would not be back next season, as his contract is up. I guess we’ll know on June 30, but one source suggested he has quietly signed an extension.

3. The Avalanche still have some interesting on-ice decisions to make. Matt Duchene’s future remains a topic, but there are at least two others to keep an eye on. The team is expected to hire Jussi Parkkila as its goaltending coach. He’d be the first Finn to hold that job, and he’s the target because of a long history with Semyon Varlamov (and Sergei Bobrovsky).

The key here is that it will be a full-time position, which hasn’t always been the case in Colorado. It’s proof of a deep investment in Varlamov, as the Avalanche have said he will be protected in the expansion draft. I can’t see them wanting to lose Calvin Pickard for nothing, especially after he took Henrik Lundqvist to a shootout in the world championship gold-medal game. He’s got a one-year contract at $1 million, before arbitration rights. That’s great value and someone’s going to want it. It’s also great for Vegas to leverage if they choose. Pickard gained some fans overseas.

4. A couple of execs who were in France and Germany admitted they were disappointed by Tyson Barrie’s off-ice injury. They wanted to see him. Defencemen have value. As one said, “He’s available, but it’s got to be a legitimate hockey trade.”

5. Finally on the Avalanche, word is they are looking for power-play expertise on their coaching staff. They were 30th overall last season, at 12.6 per cent. Vancouver was 29th at 14.1.

The decision for Dubas is interesting. (assuming he's not under contract) Take a job now, maybe not the dream job (control or team potential wise) or the dream money OR wait til the Leafs bloom then he probably gets way more choices that will come with dream $$ as well... or even gets the Leaf job. I think its a good couple of years investment.
