did they flatten the lottery odds again or nah?

just looking at it today, and best case scenario for the Canucks is an u44% chance they land a top-3 pick as the 2nd worst team, which is ... not great, Bob

haven't really thought about the Red Wings in-depth lately, but...

Quote:
The team’s future payroll is a graveyard of old guys on laughably bad contracts. Captain Henrik Zetterberg is under contract through 2021 (by which time he won’t be worth the $6,083,333 cap hit, but he’s still a good hockey player). Defenseman Niklas Kronwall, plagued by knee problems, is on the books through 2019. Defenseman Jonathan Ericsson: through 2020. Justin Abdelkader, whose seven-year $30 million contract was universally panned when he signed it in 2015, is under contract until 2023. Darren Helm, who scored eight goals in 50 games this year, will make $3.85 million a year until 2021. Danny DeKeyser will make $5 million annually through 2022. And 33-year-old Frans Nielsen carries a $5.25 million annual cap hit through 2022. Most NHL teams have a few bad contracts—the Wings could ice two lines’ worth.

[...]

And as the Wings’ star has faded, they’ve struggled at the trade deadline too. Always in the hopes of preserving The Streak. The best example came in 2014, when Detroit traded Patrick Eaves (31 goals this year, and acquired by Pacific champs Anaheim at the deadline), Calle Jarnkrok (15 goals this year), and a second-round pick to Nashville for 33-year-old David Legwand, who scored four goals in 26 games in Detroit.

[...]

Chris Ilitch, the late owner’s son, is in charge now. And just this week he told reporters he had full confidence in Holland.

Besides, Detroit’s no longer as appealing a place to work as it was in the glory days. Rumors swirled—as the elder Ilitch’s health ebbed and Chris stepped into the day-to-day work—that the heir apparent wasn’t as easy to work for as his father. “Chris is extremely tight with money and he’s very hands-on,” the former Ilitch employee says. “I think he’s very impatient.”

“Steve Yzerman will not come back,” the former employee continued. “Chris has full control. The rest of the family is either too screwed up or just completely uninvolved, and are basically just collecting their checks. So Chris is it for the family and I don’t think you can be in that position and not work directly with Chris because Chris is very hands-on. And Steve Yzerman won’t work for Chris Ilitch.”

It’s Ken Holland or bust, for now. Or maybe it’s both.

lol Ken Holland.

Wings really need to try to get Vegas to take Abdelkader or Helm off the books by offering the one of their 3rd round picks.

Would be nice to LTIR Kronwall too which seems like there is a decent chance of that

Would this work for a Sheep quiz?

Name the 8th best forward, 4th best defenceman, 2nd best goaltender and 9th best skater on each team.

Seems like Eichel isn't happy with coach Bylsma. How long until the Sabres fire Bylsma?

Welcome Flames fans.
If only there were a fake Canadian Musical Legend to sum up their season and pending off-season.

hey, hockey newbie here.

Looking at players career stats. Next to Ovechkin this year, its says: 'AS-2, AS-7' in his awards area. In another year, the higher number is written first - 'AS-9, AS-1'

I know he's an all-star, but what do these two numbers signify? Does the order mean something?

Thanks!

welp, Bergevin has to go

dude inherited, 5 years ago, a team with 3 elite players entering their prime (price at goalie, subban at d-man, pacioretty at forward), the #3 pick, useful young players like eller and gallagher and solid veterans like markov and plekanec. after 5 years of "rebuilding" (aka acquiring GRIT all over the lineup and not much else) and botched development with awful coaches in both the NHL and AHL, the team is aging, in a bad cap situation, treading water and just awful to watch.

cant wait for him to trade galchenyuk and beaulieu this summer for guys with CHARACTER and GRIT and having to endure 5 more TRANSITION years where the habs are 1st round fodder.

In the official Habs forum lots of the veteran posters are on the same train now. There are now excuses left for MB why it didn't work out this season.

It will be interesting to see what other KHL stars jump to the NHL.

Shipashev maybe?

I'd bet there'd be plenty of teams lining up to sign him, though he might want to say in the KHL for the Olympics.

Tampa also could get lucky if Gusev wants to come to the NHL.

I heard someone say the Kings are just a retool away from being good again.

How close are they to blowing it up?

Can we have Pearson?

keep your godamn grubby paws off tanner.
if they get rid of any of our young guys I'll lose my mind.

I have no idea what the thought process was behind making Blake the GM (him n zhitnik were my fav pairing growing up but not sure that was taken into consideration seeing as no one asked me) but I really hope hes somehow a savant and not like most former players who get hired purely out of nostalgia.

So painfully true. Honestly amazing to take a team in that situation and manage it into a team so completely unable to score. Price alone has bailed Bergevin out so many times in so many ways it isn't even funny. Really hoping Habs ownership will finally figure out he is an actively awful GM. He has a couple of "stopped clock is right twice a day" moments like Radulov that will give him more excuses this summer probably.

You can have JQuick, because he's what you need.
And Sutter. That would be a good fit too.

Kings have too many long contracts to really blow it up. See Brown, Dustin.

guess the good news is that Big Nicky only signed there for 1 year, so the Canucks can take another run at bringing him back next summer. hopefully there'll be a new management team by then and thus he'll be more receptive.

aspect of that move i failed to consider until i read about it was the Olympics. i guess the KHL is letting their players go? he might have had a chance anyway, but without NHL players he probably stands a decent shot at making the Russian team for that, if the KHL players will be there.

and i wonder if that will affect other players coming and going from there this summer...
