LVK couldn't get better than a 2020 2nd from the PIT dump? You had the leverage on them ffs.

GMGM blew a lot of leverage and made some straight up bad picks, that was bizarre

no clue why they didn't pick & flip more goalies

getting a 4th to take Reilly Smith was easily his best move, but that seemed like dumb luck based on Tallon's stupidity

latest rumours have Methot going somewhere (Dallas?), and maybe TVR to Carolina

and should sign some more free agents, like Dadonov for example

also prospects like Tuch could/should make the team

and Marek still going on about them trading picks to get Nico/Nolan

Ya its gross... and stupid.

Still, all things considered I think this worked out way better than I expected it to.

Pretty pissed about the Caps raw dogging it with the Schmidtuation. 25 year-old puck moving defensemen with speed do not grow on the trees.

Instead we wrapped it up with Lars ****ing Eller, who has no scoring ability, and Tom Wilson. I like Willy and he has potential but he'll probably never be a top 6 guy.

So did Dallas have some sort of deal in place to avoid having someone else selected?

Eberle was terrible in the playoffs and insured his ticket out of town. This kinda has Larsson/Hall feel to it. I guess they figure McJesus and Drais will score ALL the goals.

72o how do I get the fancy blue charts out of this link? Do I have to login? thx

Montreal got Schlemko for a 2019 fifth round pick. Well cheaper than Emelin at least.

wait what? Montreal got rid of Emelin, acquired Schlemko, and only gave up a 5th?
<shakes head>
How can 1 GM have such variance.

the good news is it could have been worse, like if they went for Eakin instead

the bad news is the trade is probably still bad

people will probably try to use Strome's age to defend the trade, but the fact is he's been on the decline ever since a good start to his pro career

also it saves them some money, but most of that will just go to re-signing Draisaitl (and extending McBust), the rest to giving raises to Russell & Kassian

likely another -EV move by Chiapet, but he'll keep getting bailed out because Draisaitl & McBust are really good

also

gjge

good news is that they'll also probably get some stuff for LolMethot

bad news is that if they move anyone else, Miller might be next
and that Garrison, Sbisa, and maybe Emelin are all unmovable

Flower better get into FULL YOLO mode, or he's gonna have a real bad time

a main characteristic of that Bumz regime that Chiapet & Benning were a part of seems to be a complete inability to move beyond pre-draft appraisals of players. they both completely overvalue guys who went high in the draft because they were considered good at age 17. like Strome turns 24 in a couple weeks, you have years and years of new and better data at your disposal, but instead you just lean on the fact that he was drafted 5th overall 6 years ago.

he did the same thing with Griffin Reinhart a few years back, who was a questionable pick at the time, and obviously pretty bad shortly after. Benning also does the same thing all the time (see: Gudbranson, Erik). dangle a former 1st round bust in front of these guy's faces and just wait for them to lose their goddamn minds. they legit don't seem to have the ability to evaluate talent.

this effect would be mitigated if they believed in analytics (some nerd could tell them no), but they don't. GOOD HOCKEY MEN TRUST THEIR GUT, and the results of a 5+ year old fantasy draft. and it's not even just an analytics thing, their eyetests ****ing suck. like there's no way you should watch some of these guys play and come away thinking they're good. they clearly have no clue.

^ it really is mind boggling.

Contrast with the NBA where the players drafted are a few years older, 19-21 (so the draft should be less of a crapshoot) and still teams are ready to cut and run by year 3 .... a player who struggles as a pro but was a top 5 pick gets no slack

and ya most NBA teams have gotten super aggro with their picks, a little too much for some i think where the cap space isn't needed, but probably beats the alternative where you're going on about how someone once scored 4 TDs in a game for Polk High etc

heh i was just gonna ask what ppl think McBust will sign for given that he's up for extension on July 1st, i was gonna throw out $120M/10, but just saw some "insider" saying he's hearing it'll be more like $14M/year
(think the max will be $15M)

so RFA Draisaitl is gonna get what ... $9M/year? $10M?
