a main characteristic of that Bumz regime that Chiapet & Benning were a part of seems to be a complete inability to move beyond pre-draft appraisals of players. they both completely overvalue guys who went high in the draft because they were considered good at age 17. like Strome turns 24 in a couple weeks, you have years and years of new and better data at your disposal, but instead you just lean on the fact that he was drafted 5th overall 6 years ago.

he did the same thing with Griffin Reinhart a few years back, who was a questionable pick at the time, and obviously pretty bad shortly after. Benning also does the same thing all the time (see: Gudbranson, Erik). dangle a former 1st round bust in front of these guy's faces and just wait for them to lose their goddamn minds. they legit don't seem to have the ability to evaluate talent.

this effect would be mitigated if they believed in analytics (some nerd could tell them no), but they don't. GOOD HOCKEY MEN TRUST THEIR GUT, and the results of a 5+ year old fantasy draft. and it's not even just an analytics thing, their eyetests ****ing suck. like there's no way you should watch some of these guys play and come away thinking they're good. they clearly have no clue.

Contrast with the NBA where the players drafted are a few years older, 19-21 (so the draft should be less of a crapshoot) and still teams are ready to cut and run by year 3 .... a player who struggles as a pro but was a top 5 pick gets no slack
