Canucks president Trevor Linden told TSN radio's Matt Sekeres that Hischier, who went first overall, and Patrick, who went second overall, would not have been Vancouver's choices had they been selecting first overall. Linden never mentioned who his team would have taken in that spot. The Canucks ended up drafting Elias Pettersson fifth overall last June.
why even bother saying that in public? jfc

The Air Canada Center will be renamed Scotiabank Arena in the summer of 2018.

The official change will happen on July 1st. Scotiabank has agreed to pay an incredible $800 million (Canadian dollars) over the 20-year sponsorship agreement. That works out to $40 million per season. Air Canada had been paying $4 million per season for the naming rights to the arena.

How long until all Canadian arenas are named after Scotiabank?

The 5 banks like to do the same things.

TD already has Boston, for some unknown reason.

BMO has Toronto's football stadium.

That leaves RBC and CIBC. Being nationally named I guess they don't need to sponsor outside of their ancestral provinces.

Rogers, Rogers, Bell, Bell, Scotia, Scotia and Canadian Tire.

Then there are a few lesser Rogers, Scotia and TD stadiums out there.

The Ottawa Redblacks Stadium is called TD Place, which is also where the Habs/Sens outdoor game is being held later this year. They actually aren't allowed to reference the name of the stadium for the game because Scotiabank is the main sponsor.

Quote:
Mike Ribeiro’s hockey career “is at an end” after he suffered a relapse, his agent and longtime friend Bob Perno has told Montreal media outlets.

“All I know, is that Mike hasn’t laced up the skates once since the end of the season,” Perno told La Presse (his quotes have been translated from French into English). “He doesn’t train anymore and he doesn’t go out on the ice anymore. He’s going to retire. There’s not one NHL team or a team in Europe that has reached out to me to ask about him. The way his career is going to end is really disappointing.

“No one knows what he’s up to these days. The problem, is that Mike doesn’t believe he’s sick. In his head, everything is fine. He left the rehab program offered by the NHL last winter. We’re really worried, but we can’t do anything. Every time my phone rings, I hope it’s him calling me.”

“To answer your question, I don’t think he’s hit rock bottom,” Perno told the radio station. “We’re trying to get a hold of him in Nashville. We know he’s somewhere in Nashville. His family has seen him. His wife has seen him — briefly — and then he disappeared into the woodwork. We’re trying to get a hold of him. He doesn’t answer his phone. Nobody hears from him. I don’t think he’s hit rock bottom.”
good to hear that stuff with the babysitter wasn't rock bottom for him

think he represents decent value in a death pool, if you're into that kind of thing

the wallet chain really should have been a dead giveaway that he was off the rails

They signed Vanek? Man that's odd.

Canucks putting on a clinic for how you spend 70m and finish in the bottom 5. That's not easy to do. Didn't realize they were paying just short of a million a year to Lu till 2021-22. Man by then he'll be able to use that money for his first self driving car!

Vanek signing seems decent. Stick him next to the Sedins and potentially flip him for a pick at the deadline. Meh.

Sounds like the story of every NFL who killed himself and was later found to have CTE.

Will always love this

So who else has signed up for The Athletic?
Really like it so far. Can't wait to see it's nhl coverage mid season.

Haven't yet but will likely. Oilers blogosphere is so comprehensive that I'm not sure it's that necessary, but I like to read stuff and for $40/yr, I'll get value.

Just took it, early impression that gonna like it a lot. Now if I lived in NA and cared about more than hockey and tiny bit nba/football it might be pretty elite. Sports journalism is pretty weak here so a pleasure to read some good stuff.
