I would never run the ball if I were Payton. Little outs and angle routes out of the backfield to sproles all day. Linebackers cant guard him. He's the biggest mismatch I've ever seen

Sources close to the bucs saying they are having preliminary talks with gruden to coach next year, but he wants to have a high pick likely to take bridgewater or manziel

Perhaps the most amazing thing about sproles is his durability. He's only missed 4 games since a broken ankle made him miss 2006. Usually guys his size get dinged really easily. Helps that he's played for coaches that knew how to use him properly, he's had more receptions than rushing attempts with the Saints.

Good read. Stuff like this also hammers home how little I actually know about football (and I played for 4 years).

Yeah I enjoyed that too.

The question we need to consider is whether Riverman would have thought of switching his personnel like that to contain the read option when deciding if he would be an above average NFL head coach.

ANFL rankings are what they are. O/D pass efficiency, O/D run success rate, OINT%, OFUM%, DINT%, and penalty rate, all weighted based on how they correlate with future wins. Seeing teams' core efficiency is definitely a useful bit of information, but it's an intentionally "naive" model, so take it fwiw.

Cover1 with a LB designated to put him on his ass every play but lolgoodluck getting the Saints with that and a 4-man rush. Jimmy's uncoverable already. Give he and Colston one-on-one, and Brees/Payton will kill with isolation and option routes all day if Beers has that kind of time.

Guys like Bush/Sproles aren't THAT expensive in free agency, right? It seems that, paired with an elite QB(or in Bush's case an elite WR + above average QB), these guys will make the offense near unstoppable. I mean imagine having both of them!

Your guys' comments to me about Peyton's #3 and #4 WRs being more important than normal and having a super elite #1 being less important than normal has got me thinking about the optimal way to build around an elite QB. Specifically I'm hoping that RG3 ends up being an elite QB over the course of his career and I'm thinking about how to best build around him....

Seems to me that 2 Bush/Sproles type RBs + a good TE + average WRs would be > having a great WR corps when you have an elite QB. But if you don't have an elite QB then WRs gain value? Is this correct?

Like imagine an elite QB with Bush/Sproles/Jimmy Graham....as long as the WRs are NFL-caliber players that offense will be GOAT. And it seems like the price in trade/free agency for Bush/Sproles/Graham is small enough that your savings on WRs(and o-line if you have a QB like Peyton who can make work with an average o-line) will make up for it.

No real point here, kinda just rambling....

That's one reason I'm looking forward to NO@SEA. If any secondary can pull that off it's Seattle.

Having Bush and Sproles seems sort of redundant? Someone with a better tactical view might know more about that than me.

I think the ideal model is 2 #1 receivers, a consistent slot guy, an athletic TE, Sproles. Your savings are on the slot guy (Welker or a prime Stokley are worth a massive amount more to a Peyton offense than your average team, so not much competition) and your pass-catching RB ("every-down backs" still way overrated and overpaid). You probably have to pay your vet #1 a fair rate, but ideally you draft the other #1 and a TE (there seem to be a number of good young TEs developing, but not sure precisely how reliable this is).

So you have something like Demaryius/X/Welker/Thomas/X, just, in a perfect world, replacing Decker with a better player and getting a Sproles for the last spot. I tend to prefer the quick specialists to the more all-around players like Bush for that role. Harrison/Wayne/Stokley/Clark/James was also in a similar mold, though Clark was developing as Harrison was exiting his prime, and James definitely wasn't a Sproles-level receiving threat.

So you want CJ/Green/Welker/Graham/Sproles essentially?

Will Ronnie Hillman become a poor man's Sproles? Side note; Do you guys know how strong Sproles is?

I know he's super short, so less distance to move for bench/squat, but those are f'ing sick numbers regardless.

I think given cap constraints and not harming your ability to find other guys to fill other positions, you can skimp on the #1 WR a little more.

For the top QB's who have insane accuracy like Rodgers and Peyton, having guys that have good hands and run excellent routes is more important than finding guys with impressive size or speed. If someone is open, then the top QB's will find them with an accurate strike, so it's more important to get open than to be able to go up and get the ball in traffic.

The slot receivers are much more valuable to QB's with top level accuracy. The guys like Sproles and Bush are valuable to every offense, but I think they are a better complement to offenses like the Lions and Saints who I would classify as more leaning towards stretching the field than running short, accurate routes and matriculating the ball downfield through the short passing game. Sproles and Bush have more value in having open space created by guys like Calvin or Colston dragging a CB and Safety 40 yards downfield. This would seem to be of higher value to teams like Detroit, New Orleans, Atlanta, or Baltimore than offenses like New England, GB, or Denver.
