According to the official rules, it's a catch.

"Item 1. Player Going to the Ground. "If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball until after his initial contact with the ground"

James clearly has control after his knee hits but before his hands/ball hit the ground.

That's basically Barnswell's suggestion, except with 25 ex-receivers and 25 ex-DBs.

The current rules are a result of trading accuracy for the sake of precision, and then continuing to do that to the point of absurdity.

I’m still trying to figure out how the Brandin Cooks TD back in week 3 stood as called. He catches it in the end zone along the sideline and goes to the ground. As he’s falling, the ball comes lose and hits the ground and he falls on top of it. TD was reviewed and stood as called.

it is pretty remarkable how NE has benefited 3 times from the bogus catch rule interpretation this year - how easily they could be 8-6 right now.

The worst part is if you look at all 3 plays, the Cooks play is the 1 that stands out as being the most 'incomplete'

NE crushing NFL metagame is one of the few advantages they have that isn't some sort of angle-shooting. It's unfortunate when it turns into in-game sycophantism though.
