What qualifies as a successful run on early downs?

I vaguely remember a Joe Thomas interview when I think he said that a successful early down run is when you achieve at least half of the required distance for another 1st down

1st down 40% of distance to go. 2nd, 50%. 3rd/4th need to convert.

So 2nd and 2 run for 1 yard gets credit as successful.

Apparently 3rd and 2 is worse than first and 10.

A more sophisticated version of success rate that is sometimes used is an outcome that improves the expected points added from the previous down and distance situation. So a 13 yard gain on third and 15 from the opponent's 45 would probably be a successful play.

3rd and 2 conversion rate is probably 55-60%. What is the chances of three and out on a random first and 10? Has to be lower than 40%. So yeah, that seems correct.

Chances of converting a 1st and 10 is about 66%, 3rd and 2 like 55%.

Although 3rd and 2 will almost always have decent chance of converting on 4th down.

yeah but.. you can't play the afc east and the nfc east every year. and then your two matchup teams are Cinci and Oakland.. that is like a DREAM schedule that amounted to barely making the playoffs.

Yep schedule was very soft but this was still a rebuild year. The Colts lead the league in Snap % by Rookies by far and their most expensive FA were Ebron/Autry at ~8m/year. They are in salary cap heaven for 2019 and 2020 at least.

Broncos deciding between Munchak & Fangio.

Browns deciding between Kitchens & Stefanski.

& yeah, Kingsbury to AZ is a done deal.

I still don't get hiring Koetter. Only argument I can string together is window is closing and he's familiar around these parts. Heartbeat doesn't skip or some BS...whatever

When's the last college coach to go straight to the NFL and have success jimmy johnson? and this guy got fired lol

Seems good at offense though and maybe put arizona back to the D it had before and they could be fine next year--we'll see.

The Jets have reportedly narrowed their head coach search down to a bucket of cancer and a bucket of AIDS

jim harbaugh had enough success.

bill O'B has been decent.

last 25 years:

Butch sucked
Erickson sucked
Mooch was okay
Petrino sucked
Kelly sucked
Riley sucked
Saban actually was okay (15-17)
Spurrier sucked
Switzer was good
Dennis Green was good

So a lot of mixed results; some were also coordinators in the NFL before becoming college HCs.

I would assume the fact that Kingsbury was around Mayfield and Mahomes has a big thing to do with it even though he'll likely suck. They need someone to groom Rosen.
