If you could pick at the beginning of your career - would you rather be the 3rd RB drafted or the first punter drafted? I'm throwing out first and second because there's always some ridiculous situation like Barkley that isn't really indicative of where the average star running back goes in the draft.

Obviously you make more as an RB. but your career is probably much shorter, and there's that pesky CTE/not being able to walk for the rest of your life risk.

Here's the contract of the first punter drafted in 2018 ($290,152 signing bonus):

Here's the contract of the 3rd RB drafted ($5.08 million signing bonus):

I'd be curious to see the average second contract of say an RB drafted in the first 3 rounds.

Well here's Barkely. $20.767 million signing bonus.

Hmmm I was looking at the guaranteed money and forgetting about the signing bonus. Probably not close except for CTE. Somewhere there's a line where you'd rather be a punter probably.

Definitely punter. No way I can take a hit from a NFL player.

If you guarantee me a 15-20 year career that rises with the salary cap, I think I snap take the punter

Still, I think lots of people from lower SES backgrounds will succumb to the allure of being the next Travis Henry (briefly a stud RB until being all about that life took it all away from him)

...Which naturally led me down an internet rabbit hole. Per wiki:

Quote:
Henry was married once, at age 19, to a woman six years his senior; the marriage was later annulled. He was engaged in 2009, but no marriage has been reported as of January 2016. Henry has fathered at least 11 children by 10 different women.

Henry has had on-going problems making his child support payments to the mothers of nine of his children. He was arrested in Polk County, Florida in March 2009 and charged with failing to pay $16,600 in child support. His lawyer estimates that he is obligated to pay at least $170,001 per year in child support payments.
Quote:
On September 30, 2008, Henry was arrested by the DEA after allegedly being involved in a multi-kilogram cocaine transaction that occurred in Centennial, Colorado. Henry, portrayed by court documents "as the ruthless 'money guy' in a cocaine trafficking ring", faces ten years to life on federal drug trafficking charges. On March 31, 2009, Henry and prosecutors reached a plea agreement; however the filing does not state the charges that Henry intended to admit guilt.

A change-of-plea hearing was scheduled for April 16 by the judge. The plea deal consisted of Henry accepting a charge of conspiracy to possess cocaine with intent to distribute. Aside from serving ten years to life in prison, Henry will have to pay $4 million in fines.

On July 15, 2009, Henry was sentenced to three years in federal prison for financing a cocaine trafficking operation.

There is no reason a team can’t offer bell 4/70 with only the first year guaranteed. Also I’d much rather be a rb who makes more. Even if you’re out of the league at 26 you can then go to work and make money between 26 and 36 so it’s not just nfl salary that matters.

My 1st born son will have his right arm tied behind his back until the age of 5, at which point I point I will begin teaching him to pitch and be a long snapper. He will play 2 pro sports as a LS specialist and loogy.

bell was offered basically that contract and turned it down. he wants more guaranteed and less BS un-guaranteed years. i doubt he gets 3 years guaranteed but i think he's shooting for 30M plus at this point.

I gave my family a multiple choice guess as to what absurd position she was getting considered for, and they all leaped at option B, American Idol judge. No one could believe this is true.

Le'veon is shooting for 45M guaranteed and 17M a year. 15M, he'd rather sit out.

I thought there was some college coach whose nickname was Condi.

Browns must have had a consultant come in a give a "think outside the box" seminar

Is there any precedent for this? Between this and the guy they fired earlier, I'm starting to wonder if maybe they're trying to cover up/squash some kind of Tim Donaghy situation.

Condi does follow football, I assume it's an exec/politics job not a head coaching one obviously.

Peterman is ready to walk in and be a contributor from day one," "He just looks like a pro quarterback -- coming out of the huddle, running an offense with different formations, shifting, motioning, different patterns that other colleges don't run. Peterman will recognize route combinations and associate formations. "Most importantly, he will be able to get in a huddle from day one and look at 10 grown men and tell them where to go and what to do and handle a versatile snap count," He is sharp. He is in the channel, I think, of success. I think he's going to be a real good pro quarterback," "I think any team in the league, you can cater your offense for Peterman. He's a lot more athletic than people think. And he can handle an extensive amount of football, so the teams that are really ambitious with deep, thick playbooks, those are the teams that Peterman would fit in with. But I hope he gets with one of those guys that can really stretch him and challenge him."
It's Jon Gruden talking about Nathan Peterman before the draft.

This sounds very Jetsy to me.

Not sure exactly what year Gruden is currently living in, but he might be all over this too.

If this whole thing is actually real, I think the best interpretation of all of this is that the Browns just want to give a giant **** you to the Rooney Rule.

NFL: You need to interview a minority candidate
Browns: Yeah, we interviewed Condi, so we're good.

Josh Johnson hasn't thrown a pass since 2011 but has been bouncing around for a few weeks in the league every year since. The NFL, pissed at Kapernick for being out of the league since 16 but let's call in Josh Johnson.

Kinda surprised Sam Bradford isn't on this list.
