Few thoughts on Bell's next contract....

1. Checked NFL FA's and he is easily the biggest name on it by far. Next biggest skill position guy is either Golden Tate or Mark Ingram. Devin Funchess after them. It's pretty slim.

2. Sammy Watkins/Allen Robinson got 25-30 million guaranteed, Bell isn't getting that when guys like him almost never hit FA? Seems like he'll get something around 3/50 with 30 GTD.

3. RB's catching more passes than ever should extend his career. Less running between the tackles and more receptions will likely help him a lot. I think his agent probably knows this and told him there is no reason to get put through the meat grinder for Pitt.

4. Actually, I think his agent has likely talked to half the league at this point and knows exactly the type of deal Bell will be getting in FA. Atleast a good ballpark of it.

i think it's likely someone dumb like the jets makes him rich, but him losing 30 million doesnt seem absurd.

i think he'll still get rich, but i dont think this could have played out worse for him.
The 5/70 was funny money I think like 10 of it was GTD iirc.

The Texans will have to give Watson max money in 2 years. But c'mon, gruden is the exact dude who might be willing to throw 50 million garunteed at bell.

Also y'all are crazy if you think even half the team's believe in this all running backs are replaceable. McKinnon got a decent contract to be the featured back for ****s sake. Conner is legit btw. Steelers made a dumb mistake letting him play with a concussion last week.

A deal in 2 years for Watson is fine for Bell though - the first year of QB deals generally have huge bonuses that have low yr 1 cap hits

I do agree though that Gruden could throw huge $$ at an RB too. Didn’t he draft Cadillac Williams in the top 5?

Steelers should spite-franchise Bell

Different OC. Haley was prone to FPS in the red zone.

I guess you are confusing what angle I’m coming from. In no way am I ripping bell for standing up to the behemoth that is the nfl and the owners. For contracts, the game is heavily rigged in the owners favor. I actually sort of respect bell for holding to his guns. I just think that it has totally backfired and worked against him for a leveraging stand point for his next contract.

I believe he would of gotten close to top Receiver money for his next contract had he played this year and stayed healthy. I believe now his contract will fall in line with the other contracts the top running backs have signed.

Also, 75% if starting running backs are a dime a dozen. They are a product of their offensive lines and systems they are in. The last time a nfl team won the super bowl where the rb was the focal point of the offense was the Seahawks and before that it was probably the rams. I’d make the arguement that for the Seahawks, Russell Wilson was more important than lynch. Running backs aren’t that key to a nfls team success like they were 15-20 years ago. Most teams view it that way.

I think the best comparable to bell is Demarco Murray in 2015.

Rang off 2 consecutive 1000 yd seasons going into his 27 year old season. Got 2200 yds from scrimmage and 390 rushing attempts the year before FA.

Teams were concerned with his high workload, and he got a 5 year $42mil deal from the eagles with $18 guaranteed. The $18 guaranteed was the 3rd highest for a rb at the time.

Last rbs to get franchised were rice and forte in 2012

Pretty sure the other 31 teams implicitly collude against Bell for refusing to sign the franchise tag and offer 1 year prove it deals to discourage other athletes from doing what he did.

the steelers managed to save $15M this season at no loss of production plus don't feel obligated to offer a terrible extension. I think teams would be fine with it, if players do this they don't have to overpay guys who they don't really want and then the fans get mad at the player instead of the team.

wait isnt that guy on the same side by saying teams are blackballing them?

reid would have been a great signing for anyone hoping their defense gives up 50 points before he gets himself thrown out of the game

I’m reminded of that quote about Don King not being racist because the only colour he saw was green.

NFL owners are all about exploiting their workforce and most of their workforce is black so yes. Plus it’s impossible not to believe that a load of those conservative white billionaire owners aren’t individually racist and that some of their attitudes aren’t informed and influenced by their prejudice but imo the NFL is really all about collecting all those dollars and keeping the train on the tracks and they’re merciless in their treatment of anybody who endangers it

Don King isn't the only one seeing green.

Russel Wilson o/u 24.5 rush yards tonight. GB hasn't held a QB capable of running to under 35 yards since 'nam.

last year vs rushing QBs:
cam - 58
dak - 37
russel - 40

They could have used that 15 million on their defense this offseason. If they don't win the SB then it was a mistake. They only have a few years left with Big Ben......

about 3 months too early but....really interesting MMQB 2019 Draft Big Board

https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/11/15/20...justin-herbert

only 2 offensive players currently in their top 20, one of whom...Herbert the QB is rumoured to be staying in school. I'm sure the make up of the 1st rd will change but currently 0 skill position players and only 1 O lineman.

Going to really drive up the price of FA lineman again and it might just cap the ceiling of this year's DE FA class that currently has Lawrence, Ansah, Ford and Clowney, plus the unsung woman beater Frank Clark and (I believe) Trey Flowers

I always thought Gruden would trade Carr and pick a QB but maybe he keeps Carr one more year, loads up on DL and LB with his three first rounders and then picks a QB in 20 before they move to Vegas

Le'Veon should get a huge deal in the offseason. He'll be 27yo and was second in yards from scrimmage the last season he played 2017.

Look at how a smart team like the Patriots leans on James White. He was their leading receiver in their last Super Bowl win and is their leading receiver this season. Being able to dump the ball off to a dependable back is highly valuable.
