They obv like the rookie and so in one sense, it's win/win for them if Smith plays lights out because it'll increase his trade value.
But...he's only 33 and they have a championship window so they could conceivably hold him next year and then release him/franchise him/franchise and then trade him after season 18.
Or, if they win the SB do they re-up him and trade Mahones?
(I realise it's only Alex Smith and he may revert closer to the norm, but he's been incredible so far this year)
I think the play is to let him play out this year and next and then evaluate. This KC roster is legit and has SB equity if they stay healthy. I don't see smith garnering some sick haul in a trade package after the season based on his reputation and age. If they are able to get market value based on the stats he's likely to end up with this year then they may have to consider that but I find that unlikely. Meanwhile he's been much more aggressive then ever and is a legit MVP candidate 1/3 of the way through the season which I never though would be the case. He's under team control next year at a reasonable salary so it seems like a great spot to let him play it out and let the rookie develop. Another fun guessing game is what the annual value of Smiths next contract will be. It definitely has the potential to get some of his haters pretty mad lol.
