bell threatens to quit if tagged again

offers this brilliant quote

Quote:
"I'm happy where I'm at," Bell said. "Football is kind of like my job, it's not something that makes me unhappy, but I don't need it to be happy."

Leveon Bell says he'll sit out next season/retire rather than play on the franchise tag again.

Because a running back should definitely not play for only $14.5m per season!

Steelers actually in a difficult place with him. He's after top WR money apparently and they don't have many options. He's only 25 so could conceivably have several good years left, but he apparently turned down $30m over the first two years of a contract last offseason so he's not going to settle for a small contract now.

Not sure they can walk away from him. Not sure he can be traded for much given his contract demands tho. Either they overpay him or franchise him and then let him go in 2019 which seems most likely but might mean losing him after another all pro type season which wouldn't be popular, given he'll only be 26. And if they franchise him they won't get him for the offseason again

He has 5 years left to make good money. He isn't going to walk away.

D. Adams just got 14.5mm a year. Watkins possibly being franchised for over 16mm. Bell, Brees, Cousins. Gonna be a huge big $$$ offseason.

Tons of rookies getting paid only ~10-25% of their value and rising caps gonna lead to more and more money for talented young players signing their 2nd contract. So it's not super surprising to ser Adams and Watkins get paid like that but I still think you need to be selective about where/what positions you spend on.

I still don't think teams are properly exploiting the new salary cap system post-rookie scale implementation. Not exactly sure how to do it but contracts like Adams received vs letting him walk for a comp pick seem like a mistake imo. Of course if GB spends that $$$ on a different FA it cancels out their comp pick so it's not that simple but it doesn't seem optimal.

I mean Bell has a point. He is #1 all-time in total yards per game due to his receiving ability (surprised this stat doesn't get mentioned more). He deserves to be looked at differently.

You'd better get the good seats while you can. Foles could be reigning Super Bowl MVP when the Iggles get to town.

Raiders are back over against Seattle, definitely going to make that one. That a fellow Raiders fan is getting married the month after and has already said it sounds like a good stag weekend will make it an easier sell

he does, it's just that every year older her gets, the probability of him falling off a cliff increases and so the likelihood of the Stillers giving him a longer term deal with more guaranteed reduces.

like, last year they may/could have given him 4 years $52m with $34 guaranteed or something figuring that they would definitely get the 17 and 18 season out of him at his peak and would probably have got some good value out of him in 19. maybe they offered him that and he turned it down or maybe they were still worried about the drug suspensions etc etc

this year, with him coming off a $12m salary and knowing that the floor for next season is $14.5m he probably won't sign for that money and he's a year older and he's 400 touches/carries closer to the end of his career. Do they really want to pay him 50% above the second highest paid in the RB market for his 6th,7th and 8th seasons at this position?

particularly when Rape seems to be year to year. no point paying an RB $13m per to play with Landry Jones

I would argue having Landry Jones as your QB would be the best reason in the world to overpay Bell.

no you wouldn't.

you'd argue that they're not going to win a championship with him so paying for pieces who won't be there by the time they're ready to win again is pointless. then you'd argue that they should cut or trade all the vets, rebuild through the draft and build up the cap space to add pieces when the core of young players is performing at a high enough level

They have too much talent to tank. Giving Bell a good contract, potentially a front-loaded one, would be a great opportunity to kick the can down the road. You see if you can be competitive for one year with LOLandry, & then you see if you can acquire an actual NFL QB. If you sucked with LOLandry & Bell & you can't get a real QB, trade Bell, recoup draft pick. If you were decent to pretty good, you ride it out (while obviously trying to upgrade at QB).

If your team is crappy, tear it down & rebuild correctly. If your team is not crappy, don't tear it down for fun - look for ways to tweak & perfect it 1st.
