So players are retiring because the Niners suck now or Tomsula is going to be a terrible coach or both?

Yep, just means the NFL product will become incredibly watered down, with such a more rapid turnover rate. The NFL will see a Schaubesque turnover rate soon.

It's pretty crazy that 24 year olds are running into brick walls just to rack up concussions so they can retire and don't have to play for that Jed York.

Does Borland still get his whole signing bonus?

Depends on how hard the Niners want to try and recoup it

borland has had shoulder issues that many thought would limit his career as well, but apparently he had some concussion before the reg season started last year that he thought about it ever since then, not a recent thing he's decided obviously.

probably not worth the hassle just from the PR standpoint--was only 500k. (so whatever part of that)

There is usually language that requires cash repayment of the unearned prorated portion, but it's rarely pursued. Likewise they could get a cap credit for 2016 because of it but probably won't. The addendum portion of NFL contracts is where all this stuff is at and teams write those up all sorts of ways.

Don't know how the 49ers do business but not sure they're going to invoke the Barry Sanders Rule over $460k for a guy who's retiring over concussions. Kyle Orton though **** him.

Least of their worries right now though. They way 9ers are going I think locusts are next

9ers offseason has been so bad that hiring MIKE (oh, ****, his name really is Mike) Singletary as head of football operations would be fistpumpworthy for 9ers fans.

That's the lowest point in an NFL career.

I wouldn't be the least surprised if Kubiak signed him as Denver's #3 QB. Dude is loyal to a fault and hilariously predictable. Guy loves him some Matty Scrub.

Good for Borland and I hope the 49ers let him keep his signing bonus. I wouldn't be surprised if the league sends a quiet message to the 49ers to pursue the bonus though because I don't think they want other players getting the idea they can just sign a deal and then retire after cashing the signing bonus check. Then again I'm very sure the league wants no part of a lawsuit brought by Borland to keep his signing bonus with him claiming he's fearing for his health and a bunch of potential expert witnesses testifying about the dangers of head trauma in football.

Depends strongly on the wording in the contract. Medical concerns may well be a valid retirement clause allowing keeping the bonus.

If that's the case, how many are gonna sign a rookie contract then bail 1-2 years in with an extra 6 figures (or more) in their pocket?

this 49ers stuff is unreal. I can't wait for the next move.

why should the guy get to keep money paid to him for years he doesn't play? seems like only dumb people would be mad if the 49ers follow the contract and try to get it back.

with how cheap the niners are, I'd be surprised if they didn't try to recoup that.
