An aging CB who just came off surgery on both Achilles tendons managed to get 3/39 while HAVING NO AGENT.

“I didn’t feel like I needed one,” Sherman said. “I can have conversations with general managers and understand my value in comparison to other players in the league.”

Sherman continued, saying it would be cheaper to hire a lawyer and pay a one-time fee rather than give a cut of his next contract to an agent.

”A one-time fee to any contract lawyer, there are many lawyers that work with the league and through the NFLPA,” he said, adding, “There’s nothing that an agent could do for me that I couldn’t do for myself or I couldn’t hire someone to do at a smaller fee.”

Just shows that 49ers management is even stupider than I had imagined.

Seems pretty silly to judge the Sherman contract without details.

Signing bonus is only $5m. It could be a fairly cheap 1st year & basically 2 team options that they'll only ever pick up if he's really good.

Contracts structured like that are worse for players than "1 year prove it deals" because the player only gets the next 2 years if they meet or exceed that value.

They just sound better cuz big #s.

Like if his base salary is $2m this year, & the base is $16m unguaranteed for 2019 & 2020, it's really a 1/$7m with 2 team options that only get picked up if he's ridiculously amazing.

Or if 2019 is $12m & 2020 is $20m, then there's one reasonable team option & one that he's literally never going to get & is just there to make the contract look better.

Mutually beneficial deal. $9m will be well worth it if he has a Pro Bowl type season, and if he doesn't you cut him and move on.

Yeah. That actually isn't a particularly awful deal at all.

Giants release DRC

SF actually traded for Talib first but Talib went nope.

Tyrod starts in Baltimore, then to Buffalo, now in Cleveland. That's bad luck.

I’ve always been surprised more players don’t do this. At a minimum, they should walk in by themselves, get an initial offer, then hire and agent and pay him commission based on the difference between the initial offer and the contractual rate.

No team would have the time for this if every player did it.

Releasing DRC was a terrible decision. Eli Apple is a horrible cornerback. I guess they're gonna try and grab some slot corner and go with Apple in DRC's spot but man that is a step down for the secondary.

Some of their moves seem like win now moves such as trading picks for Ogletree. This move seems like something you'd see in a rebuilding year.

And a response

Clearly the solution is to just vote him into the Pro Bowl regardless of performance so we can lol 9ers

I liked one of the first comments to that link, "hire Mike Glennon's agent, no brainer."

Update

Cliffs:
Quote:
The full guarantee at signing is $3 million, and only $3 million. Another $4 million should be earned in 2018, if he passes the preseason physical. After that, it’s up to the 49ers as to whether the deal continues into 2019.

The full base value of the deal is $21.15 million, with another $18 million tied to per-game roster bonuses, annual 90-percent playing-time incentives, an annual Pro Bowl incentive, and an annual All-Pro incentive.

To get the full $39.15 million, Sherman will need to play all 48 regular-season games over the next three years, be on the field for at least 90 percent of the snaps, make it to the Pro Bowl every year, and qualify for the All-Pro team every year.
Gonna have to lol Sherman here

How much better than basically one year guaranteed at 7 million do you think an agent could have gotten. I really have no idea. Genuinely curious.

Not sure of a price exactly but I'd have to think it'd be more. But at the very least I imagine they wouldn't have made part of the deal that you automatically re-up for $8m if you have a phenomenal year but can get cut if you don't

Seems like it's got a life quality component to it not having to deal with this ****, and especially young players could be super naive about it. Also, do agents only enter the frame on signings or transactions or are they also handling advertisement opportunities, tax evasion schemes etc?

I would assume the agent is the QB of a player's finances and if they aren't they should be. They should be coordinating and sitting in on all meetings regarding a players finances (including everything you mentioned.

We love the broke athlete stories but there's just as many player lawsuits because the agent blew it a **** ton of it ones.

also dolphins releasing suh reports are hilarious, sorry dolphins fans. Maybe you'll get a new GM soon.

I think the rate for most agents in the NFL is 3% of salary. Flat rates vary a lot.
You also have to take into consideration the non-contract stuff that an agent provides- endorsements, appearance fees, etc.

Seems like 3% is a good deal, as long as you hire someone competent.
