Generally I'm on board with lol olds at trying to play in the current game but I'm convinced Marino would average 6k+ yards if he hopped in a time machine in 1983 to 2013.

Kelly and Moon would both do well now, too.

Being a Bills fan, I of course saw a lot of both Marino and O'Brien. I always thought that Ken O'Brien kinda gets the shaft these days, as he's lumped in with Blackledge and Eason as busts of that draft. But he wasn't. He was a good QB who had a fine career....it only pales next to Elway, Kelly, and Marino - the HOFs.

Of course, the biggest knock against him is that the Jets took him instead of Marino. And that's not his fault.

Some of those O'Brien/Marino gun-slinging aerial battles were amazing. So much fun.

People really think the Garapollo deal is a reach? What else should SF do?

Tag him then he plays well then they have to pay him 35mill a year? If you think he is good then that deal is fine as the cap will continue to go up.

Bortles gets 3 years 54 million extension through 2020 with 26.5 million guaranteed.

LOOOOOOOOOL Jags.

Good for Blake and not sure why its LOLJags. There isn't much out there, Cousins isn't worth his price and they can still build through the draft if they want. Helps with cap room too and resigning ARob if they would like.

Tired of the hate this guy gets when Napolean ****ing Dynamite just won a ring vs Brady and Bortles arguably outplayed Brady in the game before that. That team last year was good enough to win a SB with Bortles at helm. Blake has his warts like basically 25+ other starting QB's in the league and he was leading a team that had the Pats by the balls in the AFC title game. The hate really gets old.

Here for the LOL Jags.

Cousins is going to get a bazillion dollars.

I mean considering the Jags were probably already stuck paying Bortles $18m guaranteed this season, what's another $8.5m? But yeah...

It's lol Jags because he sucks. They had a good team this year, but it had nothing to do with Blake. He added literally nothing. They would be better off with a rookie + $10m extra cap space. Even signing a guy like McCown or some other retread would've been an upgrade. Bortles is the very definition of replacement level if not worse. You generally don't want to give those players guarunteed money beyond one year. Hope this helps.

He did play well in the 1st half vs NE in the AFC championship game, I'll give you that. He also played like **** vs. Buf and his team won in spite of him.

Bort was already going to get like $19 mil for the upcoming season, giving him an extra $7.5 mil GTD to cost control two extra years in case he improves seems like not a big deal.

I definitely think he sucks, but from the Jags perspective this just feels like a hedge. They can still cut him in a year if he regresses, but now they have cost control for 2 extra years in case he improves.

Yeah those Jags and Pats secondaries are totally comparable.

The deal is whatever, but like others have said you could get the same level of production for cheaper.

Glancing at cap space quickly, dunno why some think the Jets are gonna pony up 60M in year 1, there aren't many teams with QB needs that can actually pony up 30. It's the Vikes and the Jets and mayyyybe Den/Ari/Buf can get to 30.

The Browns are just gonna draft one I reckon. It'd be a Jets thing to do though to bid against themselves.

Well obviously they're not gonna go 60m first year but it's not hard to see why they'd want to bid a lot more up front if they're up against teams that could compete in the playoffs year one and two

Jets splurging a large amount of cap space in 1 year to lock up a franchise QB who will be cap friendly in future years is absolutely NOT a Jets thing to do. It's actually a pretty solid strategy.

This. If his late season improvement continues, then you have a league average QB for two more years at $18 million per. Not a great deal, but better than you can get via free agency. If he sucks again, the hit isn't that bad.

I'm up for criticizing the Jags for the decision to take the 5th year option, but since you can't go back in time and redo that, this extension seems like a pretty smart bet.

Seems like gambling on getting Cousins seems like a -EV for the Jags. I doubt they get him and even if they do, who knows how well Cousins will fit within their system. Bortles isn't great but the team is in a position that they are so close to titling with their current squad that it isn't worth the gamble to try something else. I think they should try to perfect what they currently have and hope the Pats either get old quickly or get unlucky. The Pats definitely could have lost to the Jags this year. Jags have a super elite D and good running game that should get better with a full season with Fournette. Additionally, they will likely have Allen Robinson next season which can't hurt Bortles chances of being better.

I agree w/ this. QB salaries are just completely out of whack. For a Bort-level guy, this isn't that bad.

Bortles cap hit this year is only $10M now....doesn't seem as awful now

It was unlikely Jags were going to be in position to draft one of the top 5 QBs this year anyway and if Josh Allen is the one that falls it allows them to pass on him and draft one of the 3 elite interior OL that are in the draft. Which would be a gigantic improvement for their line as they are missing an elite interior OL.

Bortles is who he is, the ~16th-22nd QB in the league and he will be paid about the ~20th highest QB in the league(again, PAID AS THE 20th HIGHEST QB...). Not sure what everyone is freaking about. I'm guessing they just watch Red Zone and saw one of his league average 13 picks.

He's not good, he's not awful, he is who he is. They also maybe willing to run more read option next year, who knows.

By the way, how come noone has said "hey the guy looked half decent this year when he had a starting WR corps of rookie, 2nd year(UDFA), rookie(UDFA) when Lee, Hurns and Robinson were all hurt? And are we pretending Lee is an elite talent? Oh wait maybe it was the elite TE Lewis he has that helped him.

I'm not using that as an excuse, but just saying, the reality was he was throwing to nobodies this year and still was sitting around league average QB. Even with teams sitting 2 and 3 deep allowing the Jags to run on them at times.

Is it because we remember him putting up all his big fantasy numbers in garbage time the previous season?

Except the Jets really aren't getting a discount in future years. The proposal (fwiw I don't believe it) floated out there is here's a **** ton of money up front, then top money for the position every year after that. All for a guy his own team thought "man I'd rather have alex smith".

Blake at whatever the jags just signed him for is better than whatever the hell Cousins is gonna get.

+1

Bortles for the price of Mike Glennon with outs and cheap upside seems fine to me.

Terrible, roughly equivalent to what Jets got for S. Richardson on the last year of his contract. And what Texans got for a holding out D. Brown that needed a new contract.

Chiefs had to include a 6th round in the trade as well.

It's as though the initial offer was Peters for 2nd and 4th and the Rams said it wasn't good enough for them lol
