that's my whole point

don't trade them period, since you won't get close to comparable value. if you can get #1 or #4 +33 from Browns by all means go ahead.

and lol at comparing Packers situation to what we have right now. GB obv had a way better QB and they knew it (and zero leverage since Favre could effectively veto any trade), and would gladly add picks to get rid of the locker room cancer

The locker room cancer that brought them to 13-3? Dude...come on.

what the record has to do with anything? I guess you just don't remember but they were basically issued "it's me or Godgers" ultimatum by Favre and chose correctly

Feel like even the day after the SB people were trolling about Flacco. Not sure many believed in him ever.

Not that Foles is awesome or anything. He's slow as molasses and needs a really good OL and the right system. Foles 2013 (?) year was better than Flacco ever dreamed of.

How was it obvious Rodgers was better than Favre? Favre was very good in 2007 and took them to the NFC championship game; while Rodgers had less than 100 career passes. Sure it turned out the right move, but at the time I don't think many were saying that for 2008 Rodgers > Favre.

many outside of GB? or GB coaches and front office?

OK so lets go over this one last time.

Using the Favre, to use your words "locker room cancer" (lol...hahahahaha...oh man...) situation a team with no leverage got a 3rd round pick for a HoF QB that was a made FG in OT from going to the superbowl the year before and another handful of plays from probably beating Peyton Manning in a superbowl 2 years later.

Patriots got a 2nd round pick in a similar situation for a young QB that was likely going to be let go due to Cap restrictions or the ol' basketball "sign and trade" and forced to give him up for whatever offers they could, this time for a very young untested QB but we knew has potential.

Foles has plenty of film, plenty of success and failures so far. Maybe its lol Fisher, maybe its lol foles, none of us posting on this forum know. So your suggestion is go into next year and keep him, likely he plays 0 snaps and adds 0 to his value, and then franchise him and hold your own organization hostage for the player and hope you get more value for him 1 year from today than today.

Got it.

good you're finally getting it.

btw, this strategy only makes sense if you're one of the SB favorites. it's would be absolutely correct for 9-7 team to trade him now

Both. I guess it's possible I recall this wrong, but until the retirement drama, my recollection is that GB would have been happy for Favre to come back for 2008 - it was only when he retired, then tried to un-retire that they decided it was time to move on.

I'm actually in awe right now. This must be what it's like in those minds of the people that follow politics.

well yeah I'm referring to the whole retire-unretire debacle, when they were forced to make a choice

The past two years Roseman has taken care to have a stocked QB cupboard...first with Bradford and Daniel and then Wentz and then later paying top backup money to upgrade Daniel to Foles.

You'd think from this evidence that the minimum he'll do is wait to trade Foles til after he's got a good backup secured

Eagles should absolutely shop Foles and take the best deal they can get this offseason assuming Wentz is recovering as expected.

Eagles have possibly the worst cap situation in the NFL, they're not going to franchise a backup QB. Even without that issue it's an awful idea

Wentz is under contract for next year. They don't have to franchise him. Foles is under contract too if you were wondering.

I meant Alpha Fish's idea of franchising Foles for 2019 if you can't get a ton of value for him

Eagles are so cap-strapped they signed Foles to a 5 year deal that automatically voids after 2 so they could lessen the cap hit of his signing bonus...

YEAR AGEBASE SALARYSIGNINGROSTERCAP HITDEAD CAPYEARLY CASH
2017 28$1,000,000 $600,000 -$1,600,000 $7,000,000 $4,000,000($4,000,000)
2018 29$4,000,000 $600,000 $3,000,000 $7,600,000 $5,400,000 $7,000,000($11,000,000)
POTENTIAL OUT:*2019, 2 YR, $11,000,000; $1,800,000 DEAD CAP
2019 30$5,500,000 $600,000 -$6,100,000 $1,800,000 $5,500,000($16,500,000)
2020 31$5,500,000 $600,000 -$6,100,000 $1,200,000 $5,500,000($22,000,000)
2021 32$5,500,000 $600,000 -$6,100,000 $600,000 $5,500,000($27,500,000)

Weird that the league allows these contracts, but I guess it's just another fun way for a team to mortgage their future.

See e.g. Drew Brees:

YEAR AGEBASE SALARYSIGNINGWORKOUTRESTRUCTURECAP HITDEAD CAPYEARLY CASH
2016 37$1,000,000 $13,400,000 $250,000 $2,600,000 $17,250,000 $54,250,000 $31,250,000($31,250,000)
2017 38$13,000,000 $6,000,000 --$19,000,000 $37,000,000 $13,000,000($44,250,000)
POTENTIAL OUT:*2018, 2018 YR, $0; $18,000,000 DEAD CAP
2018 39-$6,000,000 --$6,000,000 $18,000,000 -($44,250,000)
2019 40-$6,000,000 --$6,000,000 --($44,250,000)
2020 41-$6,000,000 --$6,000,000 --($44,250,000)

Brees' is obviously on a 10x scale.

I have seen some conflicting stuff on this. One thing I've seen out there is that his contract voids "If he is on the Eagles Roster" as of a certain date. Meaning if he is traded this offseason the "extra" three years on his deal would still be in play making him a more attractive trade piece.

Not sure that is accurate tho.

just looked at overthecap

yikes - already 9m over without signing rookies or free agents.

Looks like they can cut Torrey Smith and save 5 and hope Brent Celek retires to save another 4, but outside of that, there isn't many obvious fixes

they did pretty well at LT without Peters but they'd only save 4m and have 6m of dead money by cutting him and he's such a great player still/apparently so important to the team culture, that i doubt they do it

maybe they re-structure Fletcher Cox, but they've already go 4 huge cap hits moving forward with him

also not sure if they've got any FAs from this team that they need to sign?

Hmm, yeah, it looks like it's probably accurate. Apparently "2019-2021 years automatically void if on the roster 23 days before the 2019 league year" in the Spotrac note means on the Eagles roster. Whereas Brees has a Spotrac which says "Voids 3/14/2018, kicking in $18M of dead cap".

If so, someone could trade for Foles & pay him 4/$23.5m. Not too shabby. Trading him before March 18th would mean the team he was traded to would pay the $3m roster bonus (included in the $23.5m #), & that the Eagles would save $5.2m by trading him.

Seems like they almost have to trade him if there's a good offer on the table in the next month.

Murder on that list Patrick Robinson had a sick year and Blount is still a great short yardage back that I bet they’d like to keep.
