Indeed, and the Chefs D might've been gnarly if they had gotten him. Hope this kid from WAS is as good as advertised.

Trading Smith for Talib wouldn't have done much to help with their cap situation.

Matt Cassel, Jared Allen, tag and trade.

Smith had 1 year on his deal. Chiefs were in negative cap space. They just spent 2 1st rounders on a different QB that is probably awesome. Now that is an actual example of no leverage.

6 teams tried to trade for him. That’s leverage bruh

I’ll assume kc didn’t want smith in the same division nor did they want talib’s large salary with their small budget.

the patriots got a high second round pick for cassell which is exactly what they got for garappolo so seems like it made no difference

the chiefs could have stuck with smith another year easily. the pats were never paying their backup franchise tag money

Chiefs also got Vrabel in the deal. Scott Pioli had just gone from the Patriots to the Chiefs. & everyone was shocked that's all the Pats got because it was a different era in terms of football knowledge.

Cassel, even though he sucked, had gone 11-5 over a whole season, while Jimmy G, even though he didn't suck, had started 2 games, & been injured in half of them.

Patriots probably could have gotten more if they franchised him, but they don't have a ton of cap room & there's different ways Jimmy G & his agent could threaten to jerk them around if they went that route, including refusing to sign it for a while.

Do I think the Patriots should have gotten more? Or moved on from Brady? Sure, but it is what it is & no one feels bad for the Patriots.

So where does Cousins end up? I’m thinking the Jets.

Vikings would be sneaky cool for him if he and his agent can nudge nudge, wink wink their way through the next month with their GM

Browns should break the bank for him imo but he may not want that. They have 115m in cap space and if they gave him say...$20m signing bonus. $50m yr 1 salary and then 20m per for 4 more years, it’d be 5 years 150 and from yr2 ok he’d be there at $24m per which wouldn’t give them any cap dramas

Then they’d have 1 and 4 to pick the two best non QBs as well as a **** load of other pics and still have 60m per in 18 and a load of cap space moving forward to sign FAs, as well as an established QB to help attract FAs and build a better culture

If the Browns aren't drafting a QB #1, they would be beyond stupid not to trade down.

That was my least favorite part of that Barnwell the other day. If they legit stayed at 1 & drafted SAQUON it would be the single dumbest thing ever, even if he's amazing.

Reid traded McNabb into the same division when he was with Philadelphia so I doubt he cares. Fuller is a better long-term piece than Talib, who, contract aside, is about to turn 32 and started showing signs of decline.

With no trading, Rosen / Fitzpatrick is probably the optimal draft for Cleveland. IDK why so many analysts think they need a high pick at RB to complete the offense.

Because trading down has done so well for them in the past? Yes they have a different and hopefully better GM to use picks wisely but to date, the only definitely vg player they’ve drafted in the past 2 years and 20 something picks is Garrett. If they could draft two more Garrett level blue chip players, say Chubb and Fitzpatrick then I’d be very happy

But yes, I really really really hope they don’t draft Barkley

McNabb was kind of done & apparently only Snyder was willing to give up a 2nd for him, so probably a different circumstance.

Yup, that sounds nice. Crowell/Johnson were ~fine. RB should not be a primary concern right now. I really do like Saquon, just not that early.

That's a bad argument & you should feel bad. Teams who need QBs will desperately overpay for the right to draft one. Let them.

My quarterback coach didn't get retained. I thought it was an interesting change -- really without consulting me. There's a close connection between quarterback and quarterback coach. And that was an interesting decision.
-Aaron Rodgers

Not like he's important for the Packers success or anything though. Definitely no reason to believe that it might be good to keep him happy before he becomes an UFA either.

It’s a real world argument as opposed to a theory one.

Outside of the Rams getting Ogeltree and Jenkins from the picks they used to trade down for Bob, I can’t think of another massive trade out of the top 6 or 7 picks where the team trading down ended up better than if they had drafted the blue chipper instead

Sadly, he’s 34 already and has two years left. They would franchise him at least twice too and then he’s 38.

He’s gonna wait til Cousins and Ryan sign and then sign the biggest contract ever in about August

Can NFL franchises tag every player whose contract runs out? I thought it was only for first time FA's, not those who had already signed an extension (like Rodgers). Even more lol NFLPA

They drafted a linebacker in the fourth round last year who made the Pro Bowl this year. Their front seven is actually very good; the problem units on the team are the secondary and the receiver crew (but that one's not for lack of trying). Well, the problem is also the QB play and the coaching on both sides of the ball, but you get what I mean.

Titans trading down then trading back up to get Conklin? Got Henry and Byard that draft as well.

Plus how can you forget:
