Adam Schefter

@AdamSchefter
Washington and QB Kirk Cousins haven’t had any contact since regular season ended, per source. And now each side will go its own way.

I don't think they could've gotten Cousins at that price (or at all, apparently, if the deteriorating relationship is to be believed), but this is still a terrible trade for Washington.

I realize they couldnt have gotten him at that contract now. they could have two years ago or something close last offseason but instead ****ed around.

Grant Paulsen

@granthpaulsen
Kendall Fuller is now telling his teammates that he is headed to the Chiefs in the Alex Smith deal. He was one of the last people to find out. #Redskins

I wouldn’t have traded Kendall Fuller straight up for smith let alone him and a 3rd

This is like Champ Bailey all over again

Or at least a sub-Champ Bailey.

The LOLs to get to this place go back years with how the skins continually ****ed up the cousins situation

So with the leftover money from signing Smith instead of Kirk they can go out and sign a cornerback worse than the one they traded away for Smith.

Brilliant

Does make you wonder if they know something about Cousins that the rest of us don't given how improbable it is that any QB that is solid or better never hits FA.

Wiki

Quote:
Bruce Allen is the team president of the Washington Redskins of the National Football League (NFL). He is best known for being the first autistic man to hold a GM/President role in the NFL. Most recently, Allen has been credited as the almost sole reason that the Redskins recent success has been largely marginal, with the exodus of former-GM Scott Mccloughan, the botching of quarterback Kirk Cousins’ future as a redskin, and most notable, trading away Kendall Fuller, which may very well have been one of the only positives on a defense that threatened no one. He is widely regarded by many, including his own staff, as the most incompetent man to ever call himself a general manager.

came out of a meeting and there were 55 new posts in here...figured something was up

I think Smith and Cousins are both above average NFL QBs.

Smith is > than Cousins and I'm not worried about his age. They'll be committed to him for somewhere between 3 and 4 seasons by which point he'll be 36ish and should still be playing the same type of football. The fact that 6 teams tried to trade for him and would presumably have been prepared to pony up a similar length deal suggests the teams believe the same.

But...it's wrong to evaluate this deal right now by comparing Cousins and Smith.
Whatever the Skins could have gotten Cousins for 2 years ago is irrelevant now and to the Skins decision making when doing this deal. Cousins was very clearly not signing with the Skins this offseason at any sensible amount and certainly not for 4 years. So we have to compare this deal to what other QBs they could have gotten in the draft or free agency. And in that regard $23m per for the extension when added to $17m for next year is fine.

I don't know enough about the CB to comment on the 'value' of the trade, albeit if he's a star then it seems like the CHiefs got a great deal

I do feel sorry for Smith though he's going to a **** organisation in a division to compete against the two best young QBs in the NFL

Would appear to be that the chefs upgraded their qb and cb situation all in one fell swoop.
