This statement is so annoying because the only thing that matters in sports is results.

If the avg SE'er ran a team; it's obvious they'd be the browns every year till they got fired.

is it results-oriented to point out that Wentz had not much to do with the Eagles shipping the Superbowl?

pretty sure he got them in the playoffs.....that's kind of important.

I mean the 4th pick could be a qb better than Watson

And the Browns or rams or titans or whatever team was the beneficiary of these kinds of trades being bad at player selection doesn’t invalidate the trade itself

Yep, they’ll trade down if they don’t go QB.

My POV is that Rosen goes to NY at either 2 or 3 but probably 2

what would you rather have right now? Eagles/Texans won those trades and it's not close.

So results in all activities in sports have nothing to do with randomness? That is silly. The Packers 5 or 6 years ago drafted a tackle named Derrick Sherrod late in the first round. He suffered a devastating and ugly broken leg which essentially ended his career. Could have happened to any player actually.

Just seems like the draft is a lot about assessing probabilities of success. The skill in doing so is what matters. In the Browns case you mention I think we can assume the folks making the picks weren't that skilled. Doesn't necessarily mean the strategy is wrong. Empirical evidence on this strategy would be interesting to read about.

We can point to plenty of top of the draft QB picks that were busts. We can also point to later round QBs that went on to have great careers. Assessing the probability of a QB being successful accurately seems to me to very difficult.

Its not like Wentz was Andrew Luck coming out, he was far from cant miss. People just pile on the Browns not picking Wentz now bc its easy. I think passing on Watson was worse bc it was pick 10 and you can take a chance more in that spot.

Browns played the game right, they got all those girls phone numbers but just couldnt score.

Their FO is inept and their development team must be crap. They could have every pick in the draft and probably still be terrible. Browns should have the capital to be the Cowboys or the 90s or even the Rams of last year yet they've continued to flub up almost every pick they've had over the years.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you not using that Eagles-Browns trade to justify the Jets moving up?

Wheat loves results-oriented thinking. It's cool.

Obviously the Browns were wrong in their assessment of Wentz & Watson. I think most people were, though. & neither would have looked nearly as good on the Browns anyway. They weren't in a position for a rookie QB to succeed yet.

I don't think the Bills are going to make the big move up unless it's to #2. Draft day, they move up to #6 or somewhere above #12 if who they want falls, though. I could see them drafting Evans at #12 and then maybe Jackson at #22...or moving up into the low teams for Jackson from #22.

What about Miami? Are they really going to try and grab a QB? Didn't they just resign Tannehill? I mean, I think they should pick a QB if they can, I'm just not sure they will.

Who are the QB prospects 4-6 and where are they expected to go (draft wise, not necessarily team)

Real problem is Hue imo. Eagles and Texans both had more receiving talent than Browns, but both coaches (particularly Pederson) did a lot to tailor their offense to their QB and put him in the best situation to succeed. Hue pretty much threw Kizer to the wolves and blamed him for not figuring it out.

Don't know who you are counting as 3, but the top six by consensus are in some order Darnold, Rosen, Mayfield, Allen, Jackson, and Rudolph. I'd expect five to go in the first; Rudolph could sneak in if there's a QB run and a team gets desperate.

ya i thought Darnold, Rosen, Mayfield were the consensus top 3 but haven't really been following outside of this thread

Yeah, I didn't feel like rehashing ALL the old arguments about how Hue is the real problem & how dumb it is he's still the coach, & how he's going to get credit for absolutely nothing when they win some games this year.

Hue has done the right thing this offseason though and brought in better co-ordinators and given over the calling of the plays to haley

I'm persuaded by what Joe Thomas said on his pod about Hue being a brilliant man manager/motivator. Of course the results haven't happened yet, but if he can let his coaches coach and he is,as argued by JT, a good leader and cultural setter and gets the best out of people around him the....maybe, just maybe it'll work.

also agree that it's pointless using the Browns to either argue for or against trading down. Whether they've stayed in the top 5 or traded down, their first round picks have been a disgrace. After hitting on 3 of 4 in 3 years - Thomas, Mack and Joe Haden the list is an absolute rogue's gallery of underperformance until we get to Garrett. By all accounts there is hope for Njoku and 1 year is too soon to judge Peppers

2007 3 Joe Thomas OT Wisconsin [26]
22 Brady Quinn QB Notre Dame [27]
2008 — No Pick — — [27]
2009 21 Alex Mack C California [28]
2010 7 Joe Haden CB Florida
2011 21 Phil Taylor DT Baylor
2012 3 Trent Richardson RB Alabama
22 Brandon Weeden QB Oklahoma State
2013 6 Barkevious Mingo OLB LSU
2014 8 Justin Gilbert CB Oklahoma State
22 Johnny Manziel QB Texas A&M
2015 12 Danny Shelton DT Washington
19 Cameron Erving C Florida State
2016 15 Corey Coleman WR Baylor
2017 1 Myles Garrett * DE Texas A&M
25 Jabrill Peppers DB Michigan
29 David Njoku TE Miami
