Here are some initial reactions to the Saints draft:

Pete Prisco

Quote:
New Orleans Saints
Best Pick: I love second-round corner Stanley Jean-Baptiste, who gives them some real size outside at 6-3, 215 pounds.
Questionable move: Why wait until the sixth round to address the offensive line?
Third-day gem: Fifth-round safety Vinnie Sunseri from Alabama has a chance when he recovers from ACL surgery to be a special-teams star and backup in a year or so.
Analysis: Trading up in the first round to land receiver Brandin Cooks was a really good move. All in all, it was a nice draft. I just wish they had taken an offensive lineman or two.
Grade: B
SB Nation

Quote:
BRANDIN COOKS (WR, OREGON STATE, 1ST ROUND, 20TH OVERALL)
STANLEY JEAN-BAPTISTE (CB, NEBRASKA, 2ND ROUND, 58TH OVERALL)
KHAIRI FORTT (LB, CALIFORNIA, 4TH ROUND, 126TH OVERALL)
VINNIE SUNSERI (SS, ALABAMA, 5TH ROUND, 167TH OVERALL)
RONALD POWELL (LB, FLORIDA, 5TH ROUND, 169TH OVERALL)
TAVON ROOKS (OT, KANSAS STATE, 6TH ROUND, 202ND OVERALL)
Drew Brees and Sean Payton are going to like having Brandin Cooks in the Saints’ arsenal. Shifty and fast, he gave defenders fits in the Pac 12. He’ll do the same in the NFL with a future Hall of Famer throwing him the ball. The defense wasn’t ignored -- Stanley Jean-Baptiste fits the mold of a big, physical NFL corner. Rob Ryan’s pass rushers will have an easier time with a beefed-up secondary.

Grade: C
Bucky Brooks

Quote:
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: The Saints are one of the few NFL teams that boasts a stingy defense and an explosive offense. Payton and Co. ensured the balanced dominance would continue by expending top picks on blue-chip talents on both sides of the ball. The Saints aggressively moved up seven spots in Round 1 to snag Cooks at No. 20. The diminutive speedster is a well-rounded receiver with skills to play on the outside or in the slot in Payton's system. Not only will Cooks replace free-agent departee Lance Moore's production as a between-the-hashes playmaker; he'll also take over Sproles' role as a matchup nightmare. Stanley Jean-Baptiste gives defensive coordinator Rob Ryan another long, rangy corner to use in press coverage. Although the young defender has to work through some rough spots in his game, his development should be accelerated by the presence of veterans Champ Bailey and Keenan Lewis. Vinnie Sunseri will be a special teams demon, with the potential to also fill a role as a No. 3 safety in sub-packages. GRADE: B+
SI

Quote:
Sean Payton's passing offense got a whole lot faster with the addition of Oregon State receiver Brandin Cooks in the first round; Cooks has the kind of game-breaking potential you might see in DeSean Jackson at his best. Nebraska cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste was a reach in the second round, but he does fit the prototype for the big, aggressive cornerback teams desire these days. Cal's Khairi Fortt is a thumping linebacker who should be perfect for Rob Ryan's defense, and Alabama safety Vinnie Sunseri, though limited, should be a good special-teamer.

Grade: B-minus

9ers cut Torrey Smith

Wonder if he would go back to the Ravens. Him and Flacco worked well together. Still only 28 and it is tough to hold it against him for struggling on the 9ers.

They brought in some other guy to help out too. Name is escaping me but I think he's failed in multiple other spots too so that's good.

Jeff Ireland. Even though he's mostly remembered as the former Miami GM who asked Dez Bryant if his mother was a prostitute, he's a pretty good college scout, and the team has mostly been drafting better since he signed up. 2016 was good, anyway (hard to complain about getting a guy who would go top-5 in a redraft at 44, and Rankins is gonna be good). 2015... Well, looks like mostly more of the same with guys who didn't pan out (Stephone Anthony, Hau'oli Kikaha, Garrett Grayson).

There's struggling, & then there's putting up 20/267/3 in 12 starts. Mike Wallace seems to be good enough at his going deep role, & they also have Perriman. Seems more likely they'd go after a Steve Smith replacement.

Part of the Saints draft problems has to be that they've also drafted 6 or less players in 8 of the last 9 years. This year they are one of only 3 teams with 6 draft picks (they're missing a 5th because they traded two 5ths for a 4th last year).

I mean I guess it doesn't matter if you intend to draft bad players, buuuut...

Both Adrian Peterson & Brandon Marshall are reportedly potentially interested in the idea of taking less $$$ to play for the Patriots this year.

I think in AP's case "taking less money" probably just means his market is pretty dry.

Is AP done? He looked terrible this year but the Vikes had 1 of the worst OL's in the league and sample was small.

His 2015 looks like a tale of 2 seasons. First 7-8 games he was really good before hitting a wall.

Seems like he could atleast be an upgrade over Blount though.

Also wonder if the Pats want to steer clear of AP because of his off-field stuff in a post-Hernandez world.

The switch whoop situation with his kid when he had to sitout the season.

Sure it is a little different than killing some people, but it might raise concerns.

Well, I mean yeah, he's not getting like $12m. I'm sure there are teams that would pay him $5m to $7m, though. Doubt the Pats would give him half that. Apparently Blount was one of the worst RBs in football last year per PFF. Which isn't surprising eyetest-wise, but statistically it's kind of interesting.

Yeah, they haven't brought in a guy with legal trouble in almost 3 months.

Guys like Floyd getting DUI's nobody really cares about though, it's barely in the news.

The AP thing was a pretty big deal.

I would hope AP has got a load of money stashed away, although whoever really knows and he does have a load of kids which can get expensive quick.

If he is sorted financially, he really should be legacy shopping - whether that's for a ring or just a situation where he can finish his career behind a decent line and with a good QB (and maybe another decent RB to lighten the load) so he can grind through another couple of years stay injury free and put up some good numbers while hopefully winning

if the Vikes traded ADP to the Cowboys last year, do they draft Jalen Ramsey instead of Ezekiel Elliott?

and then who do the Jags take instead of Zeke?

as annoyed as i'll be by it i kinda wanna see the 9ers sign glennon, draft allen and take a QB to groom when glennon inevitably chokes on air

**** torrey smith. like, honestly. in 2 years the guy did ONE ****ing thing and that thing was catch a game winning TD from ****ass gabbert that ****ed the 9ers out of bosa

horrible signing at the time, horrible player at the end

I haven't seen Mike Glennon throw a ball in over two years but I remember thinking he was a decent prospect the few times I saw the Bucs play when he first came in

Just checked his stats and they aren't awful, particularly on such a bad team. Look very similar to early Joe Flacco stats and he is also 6-6 and white so there's that

As an NFC souther, glennon blows ass. Lol ya please let your team pick him then plummet to the #1 pick again

But sure you're right. He is white. He is tall. Must actually be decent.

You're getting the right to spend a lot more money and also no development potential

In the defense of tall white QBs, 14 of the last 17 Super Bowl winning QBs were white & at least 6'4", & 28.5 of the last 29 Super Bowl winning quarterbacks were white.
