Only nugget that surprised me today is that Kenny Stills is looking at 12M a year. Think about that next time you argue that the Skins would be better off pocketing the 18-20M a year in savings by letting Cousins go. Savings would just end up going to contracts like that.
Not sure what Kenny Stills' agent thinks some terrible team that needs to get to the salary floor is going to pay him has to do with the previous discussion?

Tanking teams should just hold lotteries for ticket holders with one winner each week being named to the 53 man roster and given a "game check." That would really help ticket sales while also letting them hit the salary floor.

Cap room is worth a lot less right now than previous offseasons because teams have so much of it.

Saving by skimping at QB likely just means you pay a few decent players more than they are worth. Similar to what happened in the NBA this past offseason.

No clue if Stills really gets that $, but teams have $$ to blow obviously.

Smart teams didn't get involved in those terrible NBA contracts, though. Picking & choosing the correct allocation of present & future resources for the long term is hugely important.

If you think all players contracts are artificially going to be inflated this off-season, that would be another argument not to give Cousins a long-term contract right now. & if you franchise him & keep him for the season on the tag, you literally have no leverage over any other team in the league.

If Cousins knows the 49ers would dramatically overpay him next year because they have all the $ in the world, & he misses Shanny, there's no way he's going to take less than dramatic overpay to re-up in Washington.

Not all player contracts will be inflated because it isn't a free market. The guys who can't hit free agency because of the tag won't enjoy that luxury. Cousins is probably in that category (as are most above avg QBs)

You think NFL teams are going to run out of $$$ by next year? After this year, Cousins can basically never be franchised again. The tag is 1 year/$24 million, followed by the opportunity to hit the open market & the loving arms of Shanny & get paid $27m per year.

By not locking him up before last year (& only offering like $16m/year with $35m guaranteed), the Redskins removed all leverage in terms of a long-term contract. Let someone else overpay him, & give you compensation to do so. Easy game.

If the Dolphins wanted to restrict Kenny Stills' movement, they could put the $13m transition tag on him.

Well, in that sense Cousins is in a unique spot, he has been tagged once and is close to FA. Most QB's never really get to that point where they have that type of leverage, it's just too easy to take a long-term deal rather than play on the tag 2x. So I agree with you his situation is not the same as others who are underpaid.

I'm not sure how confident Cousins would be to play with the tag and then hit FA though, he might just take 22M per yr over 5 and call it a day rather than gamble he maintains value in 2017. Who knows what 2017 would have in store for him, teams could like the draft next year, other QB's could emerge, etc. It's a pretty big risk.

If you could get him to take a little less than he would get on the open market, I think that would be better than having some bum at QB and the savings just going towards other average guys is all I'm saying. If he won't take a friendlier deal like most do (since again, he's already come this far and only has 1 tag left) then maybe you do let him go rather than paying him hyuuuggggge.

AB 4/68...Not bad for Pitt.

Gonna look good in a few weeks when Kenny Stills gets 12mill.

No, the Colts fired Grigson so you can't just assume they'll draft someone terrible anymore & save $ by having later pick.

(Jk I know they traded their 1st for OKford)

I really love how well Cousins and his agent appear to be playing this offseason. The moment they franchised him last off season he got a load of leverage and he's played well enough this last year to maintain and strengthen it.

Obviously we'll wait til we see how it plays out but good on him for not playing the good solider and signing on for less than he can get.

I am super excited about the prospect of him playing like a top 10 QB next year and hitting the open market to see what he can get. Understand that right now it looks like the 49ers but there may well be several other premium spots opening up in 12 months time, with Rape, Brees, Palmer, Rivers (though not sure Chargers count as premium) and even Eli all close to retirement.

I think Skins may well franchise and then trade him, albeit that would be a super tough sell to their fans, but otherwise they're gonna pay top $ for him now while not winning the SB and then either get nothing but a comp pick in 2019 or part their cheeks royally and pay him $30 per and over $100m guaranteed next offseason

read a report over the weekend that Scotch McLoughan isn't calling the shots at the Skins in the way people think and actually it's the dufus CEO Bruce Allen, so...let's assume they make the worst possible call

In an interview that ran Monday morning, ESPN’s Cari Champion asked Sherman if he regretted what he said to Moore. His response?

“No, because nobody ever knew what I said. Once again, sources say. Who was there? Did anybody see it? Who was there? Who said it?”

So it was not correct? followed Champion.

“Nobody knows,” Sherman replied. “Nobody knows what was correct. All you hear is he say she say.”
lol Sherman is such a dick. Incident was recorded by multiple people and he already half-apologised for it

There was a brief time this offseason when the Rockets were paying Ryan Anderson more than James Harden (until they ripped up Harden's contract and re-maxed him about a week after signing Anderson).

Yeah, it's a bit more nuanced than that in the NBA because of the nature of the cap & the ability to only go over it in certain situations. Smart teams don't do things like the Deng/Mozgov/Noah contracts.

what is a "smart team" in the nba? the spurs and one of the three who happen to have a real star?

Sounds like Pats aren't going to tag Hightower before the deadline. He might be the #1 FA to hit the market with all of these other guys being tagged. McCourty hit the market and still re-signed but with cap going up seems like Hightower is as good as gone.

Don't see him taking any type of discount since this is likely the only major deal of his career.

Captain Kirk has been tagged. God help me if the Redskins **** this up by trading him.

AP officially a FA, are we sure he is done?

Mildly intrigued to see where he goes.

Also, Berry got paid at 6/78. So Poe probably gets tagged.

NFL has player data in shoulder pads and now they are going to have it in the balls. it's a shame they keep this data private bc this info data could provide a huge path to quantifying current questions that people only take stabs/guesses at:

- how open is each receiver on any given play
- how good a QB is at identifying that/all open receivers
- how good a QB is at actually throwing the ball (accuracy, speed, distance thrown, probably even how tight the spiral is when it arrives, etc)

etc. such a treasure trove of data to analyze

Berry looks overpaid in guaranteed money but I'm sure in two weeks time when AJ Bouye or another rando gets like $50m guaranteed Berry will look underpaid

Berry is gonna end up very rich after his career after being a top pick in the old system and then a tag before a huge contract

Berry's contract seems fine, except it goes until he's 34, which could get a bit rough.

Bouye is a CB, so not really comparable, but yeah, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he got more.
