I don't know about "generational talent," but the list of 1000 yard 10 TD backs the past two years is 1. Devonta, 2. nobody else.
It really doesn't matter is a specific 5th rounder is going to get 90% of his production. Tevin Coleman can be a feature back and they can bring 15 RBs into camp and keep the best 3 to figure out how to replace his production. Basically every single team in the NFL would be better off with this strategy than paying any RB $8mm ever.

There's plenty of great leaders who are magnetic and charismatic that lead their people to absolute ****

Right. Tomlinson and Peterson were exceptions. Marshall Faulk and Barry Sanders before them too.

But these guys come around at a rate of like 1 guy every 5 years. If you have one of them its ok to pay them, but still just do it without structuring it in a way where there are cap hits more than 2 years out if you cut them.

If you don't have a true franchise guy just stick with guys on rookie contracts and bring a ton of them into camp each and every year and keep your eyes open for talent while spending elsewhere.

The upside of this deal for the Falcons is if Freeman becomes a HOF RB then they got him for a little cheaper than they should have, but we're talking like $1-2mm/yr at that point. The downside is he gets hurt this year and we're eating money and cap hits for several years.

Alternatively, Freeman could be good enough and productive enough that we can't really cut him but this contract is still a slight net negative. The biggest issue in this case arises if Tevin becomes a HOF RB and we can't resign him because tying up $18mm in RBs is a death wish.

think of it this way though:

freeman signed 5 yr/41 m/22 gtd

in 2012 jonathan stewart signed 5 yr/38 m/23 gtd with the cap less than 80% of what it is now and having played 4 years as a backup

The downfall of the 2017 Bucs will be that they spent all of their film room sessions talking about football in metaphors of rocket ships and construction sites, and no time actually getting better at football.

The Falcons thing made me worry about their future cap...then I looked at Spotrac & was like wow they're already over the cap for next year.

Then I looked at all teams & realized lots of teams are already over the cap next year. I guess there are cuts on the way:

No idea why that sign says "league average", I think they mean projected cap.

Hard knocks ep 1.
Winston looks like a guy you wanna root for and the the team looks in good shape this year. Although having gone from the la rams to the Buccs it's not hard for them to look like a better organisation.

Bucs should be at least exciting to watch and you can't trust a single squad in that division from year to year so they have a legit chance to playoff.

When did Lions get all that cap? Staffords gotta love that chart. Looking closer 49ers and Browns have 68 players listed and Lions only have 52 so that's probably a part of it.
