Actually, how much cap space does washington have next year? Unless a team with craploads of cap space like san fran can somehow poison pill them, I think a transition tag makes a lot of sense. The worst case scenario is a 1-year $28 mil deal.

They currently have about $127m committed & the cap is projected at $168m.

I will refrain from having the same argument about how mediocre Cousins is that we had in the beginning of the off-season

I will not refrain from lol'ing at the Redskins for not letting McLoughan lock Cousins up at a reasonable rate 2 years ago, though.

But as for poison pills:

Quote:
In 2011, the NFL and NFLPA ratified a new collective bargaining agreement. In this agreement, poison pill clauses were eliminated from offer sheets issued to players under the transition tag. The specific language in the CBA states:

"No Offer Sheet may contain a Principal Term that would create rights or obligations for the Old Club that differ in any way (including but not limited to the amount of compensation that would be paid, the circumstances in which compensation would be guaranteed, or the circumstances in which other contractual rights would or would not vest) from the rights or obligations that such Principal Term would create for the Club extending the Offer Sheet (i.e., no 'poison pills')."

Couldn't a team like San Fran could still offer him a super front loaded contract making it hard for Washington to match. Something like $50 million first year base with limited bonus (and then much lesser base every other year). That type of contract could even be good for San Fran if they think 2018 is still a re-building year as they'd have more space in later years.

That would basically force Washington to not be able to compete 2018 if they match.

Sure. There's no guarantee that the Redskins will be comfortable matching whatever offer comes on the table for Cousins...whether it be $50m guaranteed contract in season 1 or whatever other reason.

Franchising him for $34m next year seems crazy, though.

If they transition tag him and another team ends up signing him (Washington can't/doesn't match) do they get a comp. Pick?

For some reason I don't think they can transition tag him. Does someone have the rules/ramifications of that tag?

It'd be funny when Kirk cashes that $50M upfront first year paycheck and then threatens to retire if he doesn't get a new deal before the next season starts.

Damn Carolina didn't even wait until they put the pads on in training camp before firing Gettleman. Must have seen enough already of Kalil in OTAs.

Calvin Johnson had to pay back a portion of his signing bonus for this. I think someone else got sued for something like this as well.

Made no sense that Calvin retired and backpaid vs showing up and collecting his $17mm that the Lions would have had trouble affording.

I was responding to the suggestion Kirk be given a $50M base salary in year one of his contract to make it impossible for the Skins to match.

You never have to give back base salary after you've earned it. Signing bonus money is a different deal but then the Skins could match the offer and prorate the bonus.

That's what immediately came to mind when I heard Hurney might be back. I'm 100% sure his agent has already called.

I guess it's a good thing Short got signed or he'd probably let him go like he did with a 29 year old Julius Peppers.

No compensation, don't think there's any reason they can't tag him. The other restriction I've seen elsewhere is you can't transition tag someone when you have another transition tag contract guy on your roster...

Quote:
Transition tag: Think of this as the "you are pretty good, and we might want to keep you, but aren't willing to put a ring on you ourselves" tag. The transition designation is a one-year tender offer to a player for an amount that is the average of the top 10 salaries at the position -- as opposed to top five. It guarantees the original club the right of first refusal to match any offer the player might receive from another team, but no compensation if the team chooses not to match.

Each team can only use one of the above tags in a given year -- meaning they can't designate both a franchise and transition player. A player can be tagged up to three times by his team, with a bump in pay each time.

If you already have 100mm, how much is not playing for the lions worth?

Barry passed on millions to get the hell out of there too.

Ya but if he forces the issue he potentially hits the open market like Favre did with NYJ (cashed in big too in '09 and '10). If Lions clear room for him he can always retire again.

Not 100% sure how big CJs cap # was maybe I'm overestimating how large it was. I thought he had Lions in a tough spot tho and then just walked away rather than exerting his leverage.

I think this too. The chatter at the time was that the Lions wouldn't pay him what he was owed, so if Calvin really did want to play for another team, there were ways he could have made that happen
