Ah, yes I remember that one. I see the numbers, and I did think at the time analytics wise it might be consider wrong. However, thinking about it....the Rams offense is so bad I thought it was the right play because the odds of them scoring off that punt are very slim so why give them a reasonable shot? Also, they are so bad you might get the ball back there plus time off the clock or they commit a turnover deep in their own territory. As the numbers show, if its a "mistake", I didn't think it was one that could cost them the game. Late in the game to ice it, sure.

Sure it's only two percent and they appeared to be on cruise control so they got lazy, dumb, or overconfident. Those small percentages from in-game decisions do add up.

Perhaps I am not grasping the concept, but it seems to me that a coach should press every advantage he gets. Can you help me understand how gaining 1.7 WP when your opponent has a WP of 10% is not the equivalent of removing two of your opponent's ten outs? And why you might not want to do that when presented the opportunity?

Oh, I'm on your side. I just realized that my post made it seem like I thought the punt was okay, and I did not. I was more so LOLing at the Raiders still having 90% there and blowing it. I agree, every advantage should matter and they do add up. Granted, long-run ev realization in the NFL (and really all levels of football in general) may not materialize like it would in other sports simply due to season game total sample sizes. But yeah, they should have gone for it.

It's still a +ev play and why the 4th down bot has a strong recommendation of going for it.
