Each poster is allowed just one prediction. You must make a prediction that is extremely unlikely to occur by the end of the NFL season. The more unlikely its true odds of occurring, the bigger the pat on the back that you will get when you connect. It can be about team records, or coaches getting fired, players getting arrested, etc.

The key to the game is to predict something that has a bit of insight behind it, yet is extremely unlikely (not something like Tom Brady will be arrested for murder....unless you have some bit of insight). Now, if you have some insight that would back up Tom Brady and a potential murder charge, then go ahead with it. That would be the Holy Grail type of winning pick. The more unlikely it is the better, and the more insight you can provide only adds to your prediction. No throwing spaghetti at the wall. Think about something highly unlikely, that if it happened, in hindsight, would make a bit of sense.

Ok...that's your pick. There is some insight there (assumed...though he is a good receiver), but would not be a shocking thing (but still rather unlikely, so that is good enough). I will let this roll without jumping in and commenting on other's picks. Good luck in the contest.

My prediction.

New England Patriots miss the playoffs (Tom Brady must play in at least 12 of the 16 regular season games...so I don't fluke a broken leg win). Insight is that all good things must come to an end. Tom Brady has looked a few times over the years like he was ready for the glue factory, and that this time, the Patriots magic, after a poor start, and the assumption that they will rebound and start winning, will disappear....magic no longer there. Huge clunker of a season. Brady's Super Bowl was a bit smoke and mirrors (sieve defense). Could be his last hurrah, that game.

I was going to go for the big moonshot and say Patriots go 4 and 12, but that would be spaghetti on the wall type of talk, so gotta stick with.

Patriots miss the playoffs. Not outrageous odds, but enough to have a chance at the prize if it happens.

What are some examples from previous seasons of moonshots?

Hue Jackson is fired by week 8, and replaced by Todd Haley. Baker Mayfield then starts the remaining games, and they win every single one.

Years ago, the St Louis Rams came out of nowhere, and won it all. Kurt Warner days. About 200 to 1 to win it all at the start of the year. Someone had to have seen something positive that summer, before the season started. They would all but assuredly have won the contest if there was a thread about it.

Something like Washington DC Mayor Marion Barry getting caught on video smoking crack (back in the day). That would be the type of thing someone would get the prize for, if it was sports related. People had to have known that he had a drug problem. That isn't sports related, but you get the point.

A lot of these potential nuggets and can be dug out of the local press of your favorite team, away from the general mainstream narrative that doesn't dig as deep as the locals. People with a pulse on what is going on. Sometimes you can pick up a change in the wind, for better or worse, if you really follow certain teams. A big move up or down, or a troubling situation that could blow over into something big, or cracks in the armor. Or, an undrafted rookie who is impressing in training camp, that those following closely can see before the national media picks up on it. A change in the zeitgeist, so to speak. You can sense it.

This is acceptable. I put the one post restriction in, so as to keep people from just posting random predictions non-stop. On the one hand, it will probably keep the thread from growing as fast, but on the other hand, it will make the predictions more thought out, and that makes for a better thread.

But down the road, we may allow for a "Grandpa exception". And if someone really has a great second prediction, then I cannot fault them if "Grandpa" sends word through their account about his prediction. Strong insightful guesses are what the thread is about.

If you win the prize in this thread, the thread will have NOT delivered, as the guesses will have either been weak, or the thread fizzled. But you may be on to something....like how the low bidders win at the Price is Right. If everyone overshoots the moon, you may sneak away with the cheese.

you would get way more than 200-1 on leveon bell getting most receiving yards

Andy Reid correctly uses a 4th Quarter time out.

You think so? I don't, but I will admit to potentially being off here. What is interesting is that when BOIDS made the guess, my immediate reaction was that it was not such a long shot, as I had just last week read an article about LeVeon Bell's contract negotiations, and had looked up his stats, which showed a quite large receiving total.

This may be a case of me having too much recent info in my head to appreciate the true odds here. If he had mentioned any other back in the league, my first reaction would be "no chance". I would say that his guess is better than it appeared to me at first glance, which means he should probably get more credit than I gave him, as this is the exact type of answer that would be deserving of the prize, if LeVeon Bell should pull this off.

The sad part about this, is that I am certain that there are props out there where this can be bet, and unless BOIDS makes a wager, it would be a bad beat to win this thread, and taking down pats on the back, instead of cash. For sure, Bell would be available in a field bet at decent odds...at a minimum. I still want to say that if his specific odds are posted in Vegas or offshore, that they are less than 200 to 1. But whatever they are, Bell is a great guess. Whatever his odds are, they are certainly much higher than my pick of having the Patriots miss the playoffs, so if both BOIDS and I connect, I stand zero chance to grab the prize in the thread.
