Sorry for running so late--let's get to it:
Matchup, Time (ET), TV
Thursday, October 18
Georgia State at Arkansas State @ 7:00pm - ESPNU
Stanford at Arizona State @ 9:00pm - ESPN
With Stanford's recent slide into getting their butts kicked, while they haven't actually lost to a team this bad yet they have sunk to being favored by just 2! ASU now sits at 3-3 with only *barely* beating Sparty and keeping losses within a TD as their "accomplishments"! As is befitting such a season they now must focus on making a bowl and the 6 wins that would require! @USC, Utah and @Oregon all look pretty damn unlikely so they have to be considering this one a...MUST WIN GAME!
Friday, October 19
Colorado State at Boise State @ 9:00pm - ESPN2
Air Force at UNLV @ 10:00pm - CBSSN
It's not often that I say this or bother to check, but I think UNLV has a shot at the upset here--in fact I've got it as a near-tossup.
Saturday, October 20
Auburn at Ole Miss @ 12:00pm - ESPN
Certainly the team that loses to Tennessee at home can lose at Ole Miss. I thought that had a lot to do with a quarterback having his about worst-possible game and ordinarily we *may* be able to expect more of him than, say, if we put a lineman in to run the wildcat the whole game (which *would* have given Auburn a better chance to beat Tennessee, probably). Who can root for these guys?
Technically, technically, technically, Ole Miss has only lost to Alabama and LSU! So really they're just like Texas A&M, in a way. Not in the "wins over respectable teams" kind of way but a win here would put them in that club and make them 6-2 and (don't kill the messenger) you know what happens to SEC teams that are 6-2--they get ranked! Ranked Ole Miss. Feel like rooting for Auburn now?
Buffalo at Toledo @ 12:00pm - ESPN+ / WGRZ
A MAC SHOWDOWN to the death between the MAC's two best teams! Toledo is favored despite being 3-3 and NOT having beaten Rutgers, Temple, and Eastern Michigan (plus I've swung back to declaring they FAILED to bring the heat to Miami after goddamned Virginia managed to beat them). Probably a game where I'll take the over and laugh about it; both offenses are near the top 25 in adjusted YPP and their defenses...well I'm expecting a lot of scoring. Check out Buffalo's junior 6'7" quarterback and especially their tandem of freshmen running backs--as they've both taken over the bulk of carries Buffalo's running game has been improving impressively (but I've not actually watched them yet).
20 Cincinnati at Temple @ 12:00pm - ESPNU
Another adventure in "ranked team as a road dog to an unranked" this time incuding one of the finalists in my "worst undefeated team" competition (ordinarily called the "most overrated" competition but this year that seems silly with Wisconsin right there). Temple has been coming on strong of late but then again improvement is easy when you start out by losing to Villanova. Looks like a matter of two good defenses and two bad offenses. So have fun watching *that*. I promise to take Cincy seriously should they win this game, or at least pretend to. Technically the safest bet of the week is the Temple moneyline.
Illinois at 23 Wisconsin @ 12:00pm - FS1
Maryland at 19 Iowa @ 12:00pm - ESPN2
I propose a drinking game where everyone drinks when a poster watching this game starts to cry. I don't really care *why* you're crying; the children's hospital salute, the dead player, a Tom Rinaldi story, Durbin's paycheck, that your Texas lost to these flag-wearing weaklings, or just Iowa's general painful style of play (I'm guessing it's still...like that). Just be willing to alert the forum when you're crying. But not me; I don't drink. I do, however, think people getting drunk is funny.
Miami (Ohio) at Army @ 12:00pm - CBSSN
After coming sooooooooo close to beating Oklahoma, Army has realed off two straight wins in DOMINATING fashion including Buffalo who's not half bad! Sagarin currently has Army in the #38 position which is pretty much amazeballs for a service academy. Miamio is dilligently efforting to become not half bad, has an above-average rush defense, and will bring more talent to the game than Army despite the 11 point spread. Like is almost always the case for Army's opponents though.
6 Michigan at 24 Michigan State @ 12:00pm - FOX
OK, Michigan, it would be nice to see you show up and win a game without also hearing your fans bemoan how terrible you are during the game. Now I'm not saying it's entirely your fault as your fans are crazy; prove me wrong, Michigan fans! I don't really know anything about Sparty and if you do your damn job I won't have to.
Northwestern at Rutgers @ 12:00pm - BTN
9 Oklahoma at TCU @ 12:00pm - ABC
A re-assert themselves game for Oklahoma and a "What the **** happened to our beautiful season--there we were leading Ohio State and the world was our oyster now we're just hoping to make a bowl!" game for TCU.
Tulsa at Arkansas @ 12:00pm - SECN
Possibly the best matchup of teams a combined 2-11 EVER! Scouting a game like this comes down to who has the better close loss; as it so happens that would mean comparing Tulsa's 7 point loss at Texas and Arkansas 7 point loss to Texas A&M. So it's like a degree of separation to a huge rivalry game that doesn't exist anymore!
North Carolina at Syracuse @ 12:20pm - Raycom Sports
Sad Syracuse was so sad about letting Clemson off the hook they went out and lost to Pitt (that's pretty sad!) before their bye week. UNC used their bye week to come out and get within one 4th and medium stop of beating Virginia Tech. This here's a game about identity!
Virginia at Duke @ 12:30pm - RSN/ESPN3
Tough to not feel disrespected and motivated when you're 8 point dogs at Duke after beating Miami. Oh, sure, the stats bear that out but I doubt the Virginia coaches are bringing that up in the locker room. I bet they pronouce it, "Doooooooooook" trying to make it sound like a turd; "You like being more than a touchdown underdogs to DOOOOOOOOOOOK? They think you're worse than DOOOOOOOOOOOK!" etc, etc.
Bowling Green at Ohio @ 2:00pm - ESPN3
Idaho State at Liberty @ 2:00pm - ESPN3
Florida Atlantic at Marshall @ 2:30pm - CBSSN/FB
A "meaningful" game in CUSA poll position.
Utah State at Wyoming @ 2:30pm - ATTSN
Charlotte at Middle Tennessee @ 3:00pm - ESPN3
Eastern Michigan at Ball State @ 3:00pm - ESPN+
Western Michigan at Central Michigan @ 3:00pm - ESPN+
A slightly less publicized intra-state matchup, but a closer spread and maybe a better game.
Akron at Kent State @ 3:30pm - ESPN+
1 Alabama at Tennessee @ 3:30pm - CBS
"They low down, they dirty, they some snitches." A Bama fan's view of the world in 8 words. I've been hearing some rumors--has Phillip Fullmer actually been on the sidelines in coaching gear now? Seems like the consensus is heading towards "Yes, Tua starts".
Coastal Carolina at UMass @ 3:30pm - ES/NESN
Colorado at 15 Washington @ 3:30pm - FOX
That loss at USC was not nearly as close as the score would indicate. Washington should really try to pound the score while they can still get "credit" for doing so.
Houston at Navy @ 3:30pm - CBSSN
The fastest play-running team vs one who wants to slow the game down. Navy's still dangerous (just ask Memphis). You could watch this game *just* to see how the US Navy tries to block Ed Oliver. I'm guess triple-teams are not going to be that rare.
16 NC State at 3 Clemson @ 3:30pm - ABC or ESPN
A big-time matchup except with a huge 17 point spread. You have to be careful when betting with Clemson. Dabo Sweeny "just wants to win" so much he talks himself into things like not kicking late field goals out of fear of a block-return TD. He also habitually substitutes way more than usual in the early part of the season looking to get more players experience and evaluate where the pecking order is. This generally leads to them "looking" weaker than expected in the first half of the season, but again; doesn't care. I suspect the whole Kelly Bryant thing means nothing to the team dynamics because--"Why is the QB special when we all have to deal with that every year, too?"
18 Penn State at Indiana @ 3:30pm - ABC or ESPN
Kansas at Texas Tech @ 3:30pm - FS1
Louisiana at Appalachian State @ 3:30pm - ESPN+
Minnesota at Nebraska @ 3:30pm - BTN
Nebraska is favored!
SMU at Tulane @ 3:30pm - ESPNU
This could turn into a fun game with some unique offenses, and another chance to check out that casual-cool Tulane Stadium.
UTEP at LA Tech @ 3:30pm - ESPN+
Wake Forest at Florida State @ 3:30pm - ESPN2
Give FSU credit; they've managed to drag themselves to 3-3. They're favored here and will be when Boston College visits and...that's it! Gonna have to pull an upset or two to make a bowl.
California at Oregon State @ 4:00pm - Pac-12N
Memphis at Missouri @ 4:00pm - SECN
"Get it done for UCF's sake!" can't be the selling point here. It's weird watching games played in a construction site.
Georgia Southern at New Mexico State @ 6:00pm - 11 Sports / AggieVision
22 Mississippi State at 5 LSU @ 7:00pm - ESPN
OK, I may have been a little harsh on LSU...but at this point I think, NAH! UGA just showed up with terrible game-planning the likes of which we've never seen from this coaching staff. A bad day for the QB and the surprise admission that VHT backup is more of a decoy than viable option, coupled with the weird "Let's stop rushing the ball despite all that and even though they can't stop us" mid-game adjustment. Nevertheless, I will admit that LSU did suddenly gain the abilities to throw and catch passes while blocking well enough to allow that (although that, again, looked like it had a lot to do with continually catching Georgia unprepared with hurry-up plays). If they keep that up, instead of finding teams now come ready for hurry-up snaps, then they can do well. Not sure if Mississippi State is the team to expose them though--but there next opponent certainly will be.
Texas State at ULM @ 7:00pm - ESPN3
10 UCF at East Carolina @ 7:00om - ESPN2
A road game after a hard-fought win is somewhat dangerous. Hey, ECU *did* beat, like, half of North Carolina.
UConn at 21 USF @ 7:00pm - CBSSN
UTSA at Southern Miss @ 7:00pm - ESPN+
Fresno State at New Mexico @ 7:30pm - ESPNU
North Texas at UAB @ 7:30pm - beIN SPORTS
A pivotal game in the Conference USA West race! At a combined 11-2, these are actually the two strongest teams in the whole CUSA. I've not really watched UAB this year and was expecting them to be pretty bad--but then there's nothing better than a nice surprise!
2 Ohio State at Purdue @ 7:30pm - ABC
Alright, Purdue, you have ONE JOB!
Old Dominion at WKU @ 7:30pm - ESPN+
12 Oregon at 25 Washington State @ 7:30pm - FOX
Boy they really like ranking marginal teams right before they play Oregon, don't they? Am I exagerating the greatness, beauty, and skill of the Oregon quarterback? Because I feel like I'm understating it.
Rice at FIU @ 7:30pm - ESPN+
Vanderbilt at 14 Kentucky @ 7:30pm - SECN
Really has to feel strange for Kentucky fans to show up being favored against an SEC team. "What do we do, not rush the field?"
USC at Utah @ 8:00pm - Pac-12N
A legitimately intriguing PAC game except USC's quarterback is one of those terrible-peachfuzz-mustache guys. You're ruining your whole life with this, kid.
Arizona at UCLA @ 10:30pm - ESPN2
San Jose State at San Diego State @ 10:30pm - CBSSN
Nevada at Hawaii @ 11:59pm - Spectrum
This seems like a good game? Must sleep sometime though.
