That's how sports work. The big favorite usually wins, but when they don't, it's awesome.
Like, why let the 15 and 16 seeds into the NCAAT? The 1s and 2s almost always win, which is just because they've earned it, and once in a while they lose and it's sick.
Boise/Oklahoma fiesta bowl, WVU/UGA Sugar Bowl, Utah/Alabama Sugar Bowl, TCU/Wisconsin Rose Bowl, Texas/UGA Sugar Bowl would all have been "just formalities"
Some years you're right, like the Texas/USC year there was no need for a 4 team playoff much less 12
But other yeas teams that get left out with 4 would havee very tangible title equity with 12:
You don't think 2018 Ohio State could've won the title?
Or 2017 13-0 UCF couldn't have sprung an upset or two?
2015 Stanford? 2015 Ohio State? Ohio State finished #2 in F+
2014 TCU? I'm still not sure they weren't the best team in the country that year. They finished #2 in Sagarin ratings and #1 in the predictor
Plus, we'd get a ton of fun G5 over P5 first round upsets which would be super fun even if they just get rolled by bama the next round (which isn't any more boring than watching washington/michigan state/notre dame get steamrolled)
