It was also one of the five youngest teams in the NCAA with zero offense and they still were out of exactly 1 game last year. Their problem last year was almost 90% that their offensive line couldn't block anybody. They were historically bad at pass blocking with statues at QB. Whether or not the o-line will be better is debatable. They had different guys coaching the tackles and the interior. It was a god damn tire fire. They regularly let unblocked guys up the gut, injured two qbs, and left all three that played with PTSD. I generally think M could not do better than Harbaugh for the HC job but this was the biggest major strike against his tenure so far imo.
The positive signs: Ed Warinner is generally considered to be a great OL coach and an awesome guy to have on staff as long as he isn't allowed to get anywhere near play-calling. He replaces last year's... situation. There IS talent on the interior. Cesar Ruiz is going to be a star. Ben Bredeson is above average when he knows what he's doing. Whoever wins the RG battle which is actually a battle between serviceable players should be league average or better. If these three guys can just form some semblance of a pocket the offense WILL be better. The entire OL that's played can almost assuredly run block. They were very good last year even blocking against 8 and 9 man fronts and their two RBs, Higdon and Evans, are both good-great. Patterson is more elusive than anybody they had back there last year. Brandon Peters looked league average until he was injured. The WR corps has immense talent in their second year. Their TEs may be the best group of TEs in the country. The offense only needs to be average to win ten games and be a top 10 team in the country.
The negative signs: Can you be league average if you don't have a serviceable offensive tackle? Michigan probably doesn't have a serviceable offensive tackle. For sure they don't have one that can reliably pass block. Michigan has 4QBs. They may need all of them if they can't keep the QB clean. Last year's tire fire interior didn't improve a ton on recognition skills. Until Warinner improves it I'm in wait-and-see mode. Tarik Black just got hurt again and he's their best WR most likely. Peoples-Jones runs a great straight line but he isn't Braylon Edwards if he doesn't get the ball. There is not a lot of depth on the offense and they can't survive an injury anywhere on the line or another at WR. The schedule is brutal. Mork and Urban seem to get breaks against M even when they don't need them. Wisconsin, Nebraska, Northwestern are the B1G West teams on the schedule and they have the most competent coaching staffs in the B1G West minus Purdue.
Also, next year could be ugly in Ann Arbor. I disagree that there's any heat on Harbaugh but if they only win 8 this year and don't beat MSU and OSU, and then win 7 next year after a mess of early defections to the NFL (Gary, Bush, Hudson) THEN there might be some heat.
