The story I heard from a New Jersey football nut is that when Paterno joined the Big 10, he essentially lost his monopoly on the area since going there now essentially meant you would be playing all your games in the midwest or in mid-Pennsylvania against teams from the midwest. Just not appealing to kids from New Jersey or the rest of the northeast, who used to see PSU as the dominant team in the area.

Rutgers and Maryland moving to the BigtWhatever...I think that may make it harder for them, actually. If you like the idea of playing farm state schools, now you can do it in two places closer.

Pretty sure we'd all mainly attributed Penn State sucking since they joined the big10 to having the world's oldest coach, but it could be they accidentally castrated themselves with the conference move. And now maybe they've caught a second castration from the BigTwhatever's "subtraction by addition" strategy. I guess time will tell.

Vandy player (Caleb Azubike) tweeted that he just talked to Franklin and has been told he hasn't made up his mind.

Penn St player (Brad Bars) tweeted that they've been told nothing is official yet.

One of the names being floated to replace Franklin (assuming he actually leaves) is Derek Mason from Stanford. Anyone know anything about him?

Off the top of my head list of candidates:

Chad Morris (OC at Clemson)
Cam Cameron (OC at LSU, previous HC experience not good but was a decade ago)
Mark Hudspeth (HC at ULL, proven winner at every stop)
Derek Mason (co-DC at Stanford know nothing about him)
Bob Shoop (currently at Vandy as co-DC previous HC experience disastrous but was at Columbia)
Herb Hand (currently at Vandy as OL coach/run game coord; not sure if he'd bring in RichRod style offense)
Butch Jones (worth pursuing as a massive troll)
Jon Gruden (contractually obligated to mention him in all coaching searches)

I'm torn on the hire as a halfway Michigan fan.

Nuss is a good fit with the talent Hoke's recruited, but

1- There is something to be said for the fact that it seems pretty clear Saban was going to let him go, just that "letting him go" takes the form of "go find another job, I know you can". Bama's playcalling in their bowl was pretty suspect.

2- My preference would be for somebody more spready/tempo/Gussy. I just think that's the most effective form of offense possible, it gives you a lot more flexilbity, and would signify to me that Mich isn't going to be married to antiquated ideas.

3- This isn't exactly the spiteful refutation of everything that Al Borges stood for that a Morris like hire might have been.

Still - nearly anybody was going to be a big step up.

Will also be interesting to see if they now hire a QB coach, since Borges didn't like them (and gosh, that worked out great).

Nussmeier was given title of OC + QB Coach so I think it's unlikely they hire a separate one.

I agree, but on the flipside, Saban's apparent desire to can Nussmeier seems to be 'because Lane Kiffin is now available!', which seems just incredible to me. How is that guy is still a hot commodity? Would rather just let Bobby Williams call plays at this point instead of Kiffin if I were an Alabama fan. Maybe Saban wants to bang Kiffin's wife. Only explanation.

This is never going to happen under Hoke. One more year of QB designed runs with Gardner and it's gone.

By now it's generally accepted that PSU to the BUG is the WOAT move in realignment. In the other direction they allowed more teams into their territory even as their population shrunk.
