I imagine they butted heads a lot when Franklin was Maryland's hotshot recruiter.

Any interesting stories?

Attention BigPoppa:

@AdamSchefter: Rams offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is interviewing today for the Vanderbilt head coaching job, per league sources.

That is a name I haven't heard, and one I'm frankly skeptical of. Guys who are best known because of their dad have not had much success in the SEC (see Shula, Mike; see also Dooley, Derek).

Also don't like the idea of someone with no college, and hence no recruiting, experience.

If you never hired an NFL OC as rule you probably wouldn't be making a mistake.

That seems like an awful hire. If you are going NFL OC route, it should start and end at Greg Roman.

I remember hearing that Roman interviewed the year they hired Franklin and there ended up being bad blood with the Vandy AD. Have no idea if it's true.

Pep Hamilton (Colts OC, former Standford OC) is also being interviewed. Have no idea how he'd do without Andrew Luck at QB, but honestly not a fan of running a pro style offense. Vandy is always going to have problems recruiting the pure pocket passer and stud receivers necessary.

Franklin got really really lucky that his predecessor had recruited an unheralded 2 star named Jordan Matthews who ended up with almost every SEC receiving record. Can't rely on that happening again.

Haven't seen anything about Morris, Narduzzi, or Hudspeth getting interviews. No idea why not.

For him to not be a HC, he must do awful in the interview process. Arkansas almost hired him after Petrino left, but we went for the much more experienced coach in John L Smith.

Funny story about the interview process. The AD of our local high school didn't hire Malzahn because he had the worst interview of any of the candidates, back in around 1999. That clown is still employed.

Man I was super excited when I saw the headline that Schottenheimer might interview for the Vandy job and then super disappointed when I found out it was his kid. Marty 2014, guys. Marty 2014.

Way too many NFL OCs are clinging to outdated styles/styles that are vastly more effective with NFL level talent. A good college coach/coordinator has to be a lot more flexible and have a system that can be effective without elite talent. Stuff like what Leach/Malzan etc run functions primarily on execution moreso than raw talent. To me that's what I think you should be looking for in a college offense (unless you're a talent factory like Bama or something).

This

Vandy should be looking for the best players who have the academic background, and then adjusting their playing style to the available talent. They can't afford to turn away good players who don't happen to fit a coach's preferred system, nor should they run a system reliant on NFL caliber talent.

So the new o-coordinator at UT is... Wickline?

Elite OL coach we sniped from Okie State who apparently has been a position coach for 20-odd years, not an OC?

Kind of weird. Anybody from outside care to comment?

Hmm...well a quick search indicates he's white, so there goes one theory. Maybe his wife is black?

I mean it seems like a reach just based on resume, but the offense that Gundy's run has been impressive and diverse, I wouldn't be too mad at it. Better than that some dumbass reach to overpay a guy his fanbase wanted fired (Hi Louisville).

I would never support a team who employed such a coach.

This rumor seems like sour grapes weirdness(FWIW the exact same rumor was spread about Bielema when he left Wisconsin and Meyer when he left Florida), especially since it's often incorporated into this grander scheme thing that his infidelity lead to his fiance demanding that he leave(this version of the story makes it the woman's fault that Pruitt left, not that FSU got outbid). Because Athens, GA, is notably low on co-eds?

FYI, Pruitt is 39 years old and looks like this:

The one guy who actually did get caught boning a co-ed (Applewhite) didn't get run out of town or anything close to it. (Not that he got off light). Story smells like bull****.

I've heard people say this before, but I have never understood why. Can you explain this please & answer the following questions?

Would you vote for a political party that had a person who cheated on his wife while leading our country and who still has a roll within the party?

If you were from Baltimore would you have stopped cheering for the ravens since ray lewis killed a guy?

Would you stop cheering for the 60% or so of NFL & NBA teams because a player or coach has beaten a spouse or something similar?

I assume you still would have voted for Winston to win the heisman though since he was so much better than the field.

247 reported last night that Vanderbilt search was down to Mason and Morris, now reporting that Vandy will announce Mason as coach sometime today. Mason apparently on campus right now for a 2nd interview. Given recruiting and the need to put together a staff, hope it's announced soon.
