so, the WORST year under harbaugh (with a third string QB and one of the youngest teams in the country) so far was better than all but two of the seven RR/Hoke seasons; while his peak was—and remains—higher than anything the previous coaches, including even Carr, put together since probably 1997. would be total fool’s gold to think you would be certain to improve (which in this situation is what you HAVE to be)

Harbaugh is literally the best coach you can get. You can either get mad you aren't what you're used to be or accept your reality (let's face it this has been at least 10 years) of being on the Iowa tier or so.

ie, see Nebraska. Though Neb would love the Iowa tier...

They outgained VT, lost the turnover battle 5-0 and gave up a blocked punt for a TD. Obvious variance is obvious. They'll be fine. 8-4 or so this year.

i witnessed every game of a Taggart season last year. no discipline at any time in the season, leading to penalties galore and the 'variance' you identify associated with a 0-5 turnover differential and giving up a blocked punt for a TD.

having the entire offseason to prepare your team and leading the nation in fewest points scored after week one is not a good look.

Yeah I remember the board member last month saying the had no money for the buyout after the other buyouts they just paid (then they started to talk about basketball so I tuned the details out). But being able to fire him for cheating would probably make that point moot.

BTW, I love how it's ambiguous what the word "cheating" means here.
