I think it's a pretty interesting move to have him come back under Jonathan Smith. He was Smith's HC for only his first year (obviously he recruited him)..but Dennis Erickson coached Smith for his last three years after Riley left to coach the Chargers. I'm guessing there are lots of things Smith can learn from Riley about being a HC and comparing that to what he learned from Petersen at Boise/UW.
Lesson 1, if anyone offers you a chance to be in over your head for an extra million or four, take it! OSUwest isn't going anywhere.

Oregon is desperately chasing that recruiting fix.

Even under Chip and Helfrich they never recruited at the level Taggart was this year and the fans really want to believe that is what will bring them “back” rather than good coaching.

In their narrow focus on saving the recruiting class they’ve missed the fact that they just hired a guy who couldn’t compete in the Sun Belt.

At this point it’s just a question of how long it’s going to be until they realize Cristoball is in over his head. Herbert might be able to paper over any glaring deficiencies for a couple seasons if he stays healthy.

He is one of the best recruiting position coaches in the country. OL coach for Bama for four years prior to becoming part of Taggart’s all-star staff at Oregon last year.

Before that he was head coach at FIU for six years where he successfully built the program up from being terrible to just being bad. Caveat being he was extremely young. Oregon fans better hope he learned a lot from Saban since then.

That is the orange and brown colored glasses view.

Reality is that Smith is on no way qualified to be a HC in the PAC-12 and hiring Riley is an admission that he needs both a babysitter and a public face. Seems like a recipe for a disaster but the only time the UW offense worked during Smith’s tenure was the 2/3 season that Tedford babysat Smith so maybe he is willing to share power.

And before that he was a well-regarded assistant and recruiter at Miami. In fact, he was high on Miami's list to replace Al Golden two years ago until the moment Mark Richt became available.

Working under Saban is obviously a great path to a HC job. And it's equally obvious that no one actually enjoys working for Saban in the moment.

I heard 60-70 Oregon players signed a petition to have Crystalball as the HC. Also heard that pretty much sealed the deal for Leavitt to leave it since has HC aspirations.

Because obviously the players are the most knowledgeable and objective source to rely on to find the best coach available. Not a good look for Mullens to cave to #themovement without even kicking tires on Wilcox, Norvell, Brohm or even someone like Neal Brown.

wasn't claiming the players liking him was a good thing, just repeating what i've heard. every interim HC seems to have the backing of his players. see Orgeron x2 and Helton x2.

word out of Eugene is Mullens got neutered by Phil and Kilkenny for this hire after the Taggart result (buyout too small, etc). Phil is in love with this recruiting class and apparently Crystalball made a huge impression in the interview. a majority of sources thought Sumlin was going to be announced yesterday until the Cristobol interview happened. there's also speculation they wanted to have some sort of culture continuity and didn't want to start from scratch all over again.

i have a hunch this will go the way of the Helfrich. inherit a solid team with a great QB and with their schedule i wouldn't be overly surprised if they win 9-10 games next year...after that? we'll see.

speaking of Herbert, if he stays healthy i'm predicting he will be in the running for several post season awards next year, and i also think he will have a decent NFL career if he chooses to take that path. dude is a baller.

Appreciate the information and perspective. Didn't mean to attack the messenger just the hiring itself.

I agree they are set up for success next season and it will likely be a downward trend from there a la Helfrich or Hoke.

Welp.

ASU's Defensive Coordinator left.

So we are likely targeting Texas Tech's DC, David Gibbs, who of course worked under Herm Edwards with the Chiefs in '06-'08. Texas Tech is the team that gave up 8!!! TDs to Kalen Ballage last year.

Our recent games against them:
2016: ASU wins 68-55
2017: ASU loses 52-45

Our Offensive Coordinator, Billy Napier, who was supposedly the key to making Herm Edwards work as a head coach, made $550k last year. He was just offered a head coaching job at Louisiana Lafayette for >900k per year.

These details don't matter. There is no chance that the Herm Edwards tenure at ASU will be viewed as a success in the future.

10 years. Lol. No way he stays even close to that. Probably just a way for FAU to get a fat payday when someone hires him away
