It doesn't really help or hurt Bama that much.

Compare the probability of them finishing 5-8 versus the probability of them losing a game to somebody like Washington or something. Pretty similar, probably.

Also, you guys forget how cyclical this stuff is.

From 02 to 08, USC finished with 2 or fewer losses 7 out of 7 years.

They had a transcendent coach, were located in the heart of a great recruiting zone, had a rabid fan base, tons of money, etc.

In the 10 years since, they've finished with 2 or fewer losses 0 out of 10 years.

Same story with Texas, with Florida.
