He's going to coach all games during the season. Wouldn't have been a real suspension anyway. Just him not sitting on the sidelines for the cupcake part of the schedule. That's like suspending an NFL coach for pre-season games.

The way I read it the deal is dead because he wasn't willing to admit he was misleading (aka lying to) the NCAA investigators. He would have been suspended 3 games for that part and only 1 game for the actual infractions.

this is all so dumb, and I don't care anymore

Can we just fast forward to the point where football is independent of all other college sports?

All of this realignment nonsense is so stupid. They're just forming cartels to negotiate with the TV networks, but there are so many negative externalities (i.e. the ****ing fans and athletes, which is the whole point of college sports) that aren't correctly priced that it just leads to such overall suboptimal outcomes.

Also hilarious that it's totally reasonable to destroy a 100 year old conference, with this bloodthirsty lust for tv money, but also somehow everybody is fine with rutgers and vanderbilt getting the same amount of money as ohio state and alabama?

Like, they're gonna hold Oregon's feet to the fire and make them take a partial share, while Rutgers and Maryland are just sitting there counting checks, lol.

I say this as I am currently placing bets on who is going to win the sun belt, so what do I know

The logical step would be for the big brands to form a football-only super division that basically serves as a developmental league for the NFL. They could name it CINO (college in name only). At that point they could also let their "student" athletes decide if they want to attend classes. It's not like you're setting yourself up for winning a Nobel Prize by getting a random bachelor's degree from Alabama.

But that would probably lead to players demanding revenue sharing and schools obviously don't want that.

there certainly is a positive correlation to CFB teams being good and the amount of players they have who are "General Studies" majors.

it's going to be hilarious when 5 years from now, this shakes out with three 24-team mega conferences, and Oregon, Washington, Cal, Stanford, USC and UCLA are all in the "Big-10 very-west" and play each other every year and we're most of the way back to the pac-8

It has been pretty consistent with moves like the SWC to Big12, Big East to ACC. Private schools and smaller publics are left behind so the big schools can associate with each other.

hahaha amazing, now stanford apparently joining the ACC for free and leaving Cal behind.

This keeps getting worse lol

Surely the B1G would take them for free?

I wonder if the B1G would take Cal and Stanford at like 1/4 shares or something. Surely the presidents place some value on hob knobbing with the brainiacs

What's even the point though, like you're gonna need a ton of NIL money to compete going forward regardless, which Cal won't ever have

Stanford has the 2nd most (1st most FBS) billionaires of any college in the US, Cal 9th (3rd). You'd think one of these guys would be like **** it lemme get a semi pro team for fun.

At least I got my mountaineers!

Also, this is so bad for the university itself because there is such a clear alternative in UCLA. It's not like UVA or UNC or something, where even if the sports went poof, the school is still so much better than all the other public in state schools academically.

The me of 5 years from now is never going to Berkeley over UCLA. The sports and atmosphere will swing a thousand kids a year from Berkeley to UCLA, then the school becomes less fun, then all the people who don't care about sports but still want some sort of social scene will slowly shift to UCLA as well, and then after a decade Berkeley is just UCSD.

I'm sure our grad programs and research will still be fine, but it will seriously erode the quality of the undergraduate life which will really adversely affect the yield against UCLA.

Imagine one of the guys would be like screw those peasants who pay to put their kids on the sailing team, here's 100mil so my son can be the starting QB.

Stanford is going to be fine anyway, they could just let donors pay for olympic sports. But for a lot of other schools less football revenue will mean less other sports.
