I am on the same page that this wvu team is pretty damn strong. I'm a uva fan - when you beat us a while ago I thought uva was really solid and you just looked better than us. Not miles better, but we just had no answer. It's pretty rare I feel that way about a team we're playing. And I'm generally a wvu hater in that your press is dumb.

I don't think wvu was nearly this good last year. You're legit top ten.

Carter picked up 4 fouls in like the 15 minutes he played against Trae, should have had more (got beat and reached/slapped a ton), and was lucky Trae’s teammates kept dropping passes after he got dusted by Trae.

I mean, dude got homecooking from the refs, and missed a half of the game due to fouls incurred by being unable to guard Trae w/o fouling. Dominated him tho k.

The WVU bigs did a good job of rim protection and engulfing Trae when he got deep.

Colorado going from losing to USanDiego at home to sweeping AZ schools a month later is quite a development.

its easy to play aggressive defense when the refs only call 25% of the fouls you commit

I wouldn't say UVa had "no answer" - it was a 2-point game with a minute left - but yes, West Virginia is very good this season. No shame in losing at their place.

OK went 19/28 from the line. If they shot their season average, they would've had 1.5 more points. Citing OK's free throw percentage as one of the two main reasons they lost is just bizarre. Like, if WV had shot our season % from the field, we would've won by 22 instead of 13.

Teddy Allen had a nice game with 20 points. In the last 4 games he's also put up 24, 22 and 15 so it's not exactly like that today was miraculous. He's good, and it took him half a season to figure out college ball, but it's not like he was banking in 25 footers. He was mostly just finishing plays at the rim off of either nice drives, shoddy defense or nice passes.

Basically, Jevon Carter straight up dominated Trae Young in very facet of the game for the entire time the two went against each other, forced him into a ton of horrifically awful shots, picked his pocket a bunch of times, abused him offensively and completely removed him from the offense. Trae was just completely unprepared for defense like that and got annihilated, and the only respite he got was when the refs called two absolute phantom calls on JC which forced him to the bench and let Trae get into his first semblance of any kind of rhythm by gifting him some FTs.

I wouldn't bet on it happening again the next time we play... if anything tonight is probably going to be a wake up call for him. He set college basketball on fire the last couple of months and has been super awesome to watch, and has been on a non stop love fest on every CBB outlet. Tonight, he went up against a senior who is the best defender in the country who wrecked him and probably humbled him a bit. Probably going to motivate him to come out even harder and improve even more, and make him even more dangerous in march.

Anyway, I'm still fully prepared for the roof to fall in and/or for us to lose to like Stephen F Austin in the first round or something, but so far this looks like the best WV team I've ever seen. The press is the best it's ever been, and we finally actually have some shot blocking to rely on in the half court. But most importantly, between, Carter, Allen and Bolden (and to a lesser extent, West) we actually have the one thing we haven't had in a long time which is a few dudes who can take the ball and go score when we need a bucket... and we also get Ahmad back eligible for our next game too.

I think this team could legit go pretty far in march if we get a good draw
Yeah Esa Ahmad coming back is huge.

yea, i'm not trying to go overboard, wvu didn't blow the doors off us or anything. uva would probably be a small favorite at a neutral site. and i know they beat us last year, we were a bit down also - but i just haven't put them on our level before now but would consider them as solid as us this year. during that game i didn't feel like we weren't beating them because of bad luck, bad shooting, foul calls, etc, i just felt like we were both playing a good game and we just couldn't find a way to outscore them. that's all i meant by no answer.

Ahmad is really good on both sides of the ball.

OSU tied with #1 MSU with under 4 mins left in the first half. Feels like OSU has a legit shot at this cobsidering they arent running hot from 3 or anything and game is still close.

Yeah, you know the great NCAA conspiracy to consistently rig the reffing in favor of big money powerhouse national brand West Virginia.

Sometimes I wonder how other teams compete with WV, given our staggering national prestige and bottomless pockets. Teams are down 20-0 before they even walk on the court

#1 Sparty down 13 at half to Ohio State. Warm up the lolsparty thread.

Will WV be #1 if Sparty loses?

We were 6th, and then won @ KSU by 8 and beat #7 Oklahoma at home by 13

1 Sparty will have lost, 2 Duke lost @ NC State by 11, 4 ASU has lost 2 in a row, and 5 Xavier lost @ Prov by 9. Only team ahead of us that didn't lose is Nova

Not sure I can ever remember WV being ranked #1

I would assume Nova would be #1, but WV would move to #2. Looks like last time WV was #1 was 1958

It happens with all teams that play "aggressive" D. Refs won't call fouls every play.

for ****s and giggles...

UVa and WVU's NCAAT performances this decade:

UVa
5 appearances
2 S16s
1 E8

WVU
6 appearances
3 S16s
1 E8
1 F4

maybe we should be talking about UVa making it to WVU's level?

Spoiler:
yes i'm pissed at being curb stomped in Charlottesville again

Uva can't really say much until we start doing better in the tournament, true. Variance is a *****. I honestly think our Natty equity was super great the year we choked so badly in the e8 vs Syracuse. Our next games would've been vs unc and then Villanova, both of whom we beat in the regular season. But it is what it is and our style is a gimmick that doesn't work in March until it does.

Drawing one of the best 4 seeds of all time in that loaded Michigan State team screwed UVA too. Lost a close game to MSU as a 1 seed that year (Joe Harris sr year iirc)in the Sweet 16. Wouldve played UConn next and I think they wouldve beat eventual champ Uconn.
