Like how UNC just let Kentucky burn a bunch of clock before fouling for no reason whatsoever

This is like watching a three hour infomercial with some basketball plays sprinkled in periodically.

So fun trivia that was on the UK postgame show. Teams UK has played 5 or more times and has a losing record

UNC 18-25
Arizona 2-3
UConn 1-4

The one you wouldn't guess in 100 tries
Spoiler:
St. Louis 8-9

The one you wouldn't guess in 1000 tries
Spoiler:
Lexington YMCA 2-5. Of course those 7 games were from 1903-1913, but lol

Either UK's first game ever or first win ever was against the Lex YMCA. I did a trivia thing on the program years ago. (Just looked it up. UK's second ever game and first win was against them, 1903.)

There's four teams in a clear tier of their own right now:

Purdue, Houston, UConn, Arizona.

They've emerged way ahead of the field in the metrics. Even if you take out preseason priors on Torvik, those four are at the top.

Maybe so, but all that matters for Purdue, Houston, and Arizona is what happens in March. I haven't seen anything that makes me any more confident in them than in the past.

Purdue lost to NW. Although, you do have some nice wins otherwise. But it's still mid-December.

Hou hasn't beaten anyone. And Kelvin Sampson is still the coach.

Ari's best win is @dook which really doesn't look that special. I guess you're giving them credit for hanging with Purdue. Caleb Love is still on the squad.

I think everyone is chasing UConn, their loss @KU notwithstanding. And it's not really close.

The metrics account for losses too.

You guys are being too quick to write off Painter or Sampson.

Jay Wright, Tony Bennett, Scott Drew, Dan Hurley were all guys who "Couldn't get it done in March" until they did.

I haven’t written off anyone. I believe it when I see it. And only one of those 4 guys you listed actually have a sustained level of success in March.

Hurley has a good chance to keep it going for himself. And I wouldn’t say he was a guy who couldn’t get it done. He took way less time to win his title compared to those other guys.

Damn I met him once and couldn't say nicer things about him. I thought he was in a cancer situation that he could battle. Didn't know it was stage 4 asap. I know the UNC media kept it pretty closed doors. He was diagnosed in March and gone just like that. What a sad day.

I agree, especially given the very high variance nature of the NCAA tourney, but Hurley feels like a weird outlier on your list.

yeah...

Jay Wright

Scott Drew

Tony Bennett

Dan Hurley

Hurley went from 2 tournament wins at Rhode Island, to two tournament appearances at UConn, to title

The regular season is like cash games stretched out throughout 5 months. March is a large field donkament similar to the wsop main event. The great coaches crush the regular season every year and continue putting out top 10-25 KenPom teams every year.

However, on this poker forum with supposed poker players, people still give you the "yeah but has he won the world series of poker main event" about great coaches. Kind of hilarious.

I mean Matt Painter is essentially CBB's Tom Dwan and Hubert Davis is CBB's Darvin Moon. You'd never say Moon is better since he came runner up in the big field donkament one year and Dwan's never made a deep run, but you don't want to use that logic in CBB. Just doesn't make sense to me.

lol, that’s some impressive coping.

If March Madness is such a donkament, then why do some schools and coaches have a lot more success than the rest? I’m not saying it’s not high variance in any one given season, but over a long period of time, it’s beatable. To not even have one FF appearance in 17 qualified seasons is hilarious. Especially considering some of the awful losses along the way.

I’d compare it more to small field high stakes tournaments, where the best players (schools) still continue to win when it matters in the long run. The March Madness favorites generally have somewhere around 10% to win entering the tournament. That is certainly not ME odds.

And in case you weren’t aware, UNC’s history goes back much further than when Hubert Davis started coaching.

Matt Painter is no where close to the likes of Dean, Roy, Coach K, Jay Wright, Jim Calhoun, etc.

hell. he's nowhere near the likes of Gut (who only coached 3 seasons) when it comes to MM success
