Anyone here a ref? There was a play in the Virginia/ND game last night that I was wondering about. It was rather minor and didn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things, but I was curious if it was the right call.

Virginia bricked a shot near the end of the shot clock; the ball didn't hit the rim. A Virginia player rebounded it with I think 3 seconds left on the shot clock. The shot clock reset, though, so Virginia slowed things up to set up the offense again (I think the rebounder passed it out to a teammate on the 3-point line, but no matter).

About two seconds after the rebound, the refs stopped the game to discuss the shot clock situation and determined (correctly) that it should not have been reset.

Here's what I found curious: Virginia got the ball back with only 1 second left on the shot clock. True, the clock would've been at 1 second based on when the ref blew the whistle, but it seemed to me (logically, that is - I don't know the rule) that Virginia should've been given 3 seconds because that's when the rebound was made the shot clock was reset. The Virginia player would not have stood at the 3-point line setting up the offense if the clock wasn't reset; either he or the rebounder would've put up a shot. Virginia let those two seconds elapse because of they rightfully thought there were 30 seconds on the clock.

Did the refs make the correct call and it's just a "sucks to be you" situation? Or should they have given Virginia the amount of time that would've been on the clock when it was reset? Odds are that Virginia would've still taken and missed a bad shot, anyway, but I thought it was an interesting situation.

call that happens fairly often for both shot clock and game clock. there have been times when the game clock failed to start at the end of the game and a last second shot gets waived off because procedure is to use a stop watch to determine if the clock would have been at zero.

It's a dumb rule but that's how they apply it. But yes, it's super dumb and way infuriating when it's a last second shot that gets waved off.

Another shot clock related rule that's dumb is how they stop play if the ball is loose when it hits zero. So many fast breaks are ruined when a team panic chucks a three and there's a long rebound off the glass or the ball gets stripped as they try and dribble through a double team to get off a desperation heave. How hard would it be to only stop play if the offense still has possession after the clock expires?

FSU got swamped.

I"ll be a sumbitch you guys are good. Right out of the gate first guess with maybe 100 NCAA tourney games during my lifetime. You nailed it. Why was it so easy and why did you guess this game??

You mean you weren't surprised UK beat Louisville in the 2014 tourney?

No one advocates the flip the switch when the time comes strategy but it's clearly what Nova is doing. Good luck with that.
Good comment I agree but no one can sustain mega-peak. Not even Secretariat (who lost either next race or second race after Belmont). So what else are you gonna do? Got's to drift. I agree mailing it in ain't the answer.

No. In fact was describing as an almost fairy tale season for UofL to win that game, which meant an elite 8 on heels of epic title run the year before. And life ain't a fairy tale for Rick Pitino. Calipari has owned him so bad in their current incarnations that it's sick (a little revenge this year). Kentucky was making sick runs in tourney even with some of their non-elite teams. Too many NBA players on the court is trouble. Did not like UofL in that spot. What was line, funny I can remember many lines from decades that one eludes me right now. Louisville 3 and dropping???

Ga Tech is a combo of bad losses + great wins. Wonder if the committee will put them in if they go .500 in the ACC.

They make no sense. Beat FSU by 22, beat UNC by 12, but lost to Duke by 53 and to TENN by 23.

They should be in if they win one of the 2 games vs. ND and go 5-3 in their other games vs. the bottom of the ACC (Clemson, Wake, BC, MIA, Cuse 2x, NCST, and PITT). That's actually a super easy road. They can honestly probably lose both games to ND and still get in bc 6-2 in those remaining games and 1 tourney win is well within the realm of reason. I just think beating ND once is an easier road bc that gives them 3 great wins.

They also play something called the Tusculum Pioneers still. I have no idea what those are or why they're playing them in the middle of ACC season, but if they lose that then lol at them.

anything from 1-9 to 7-3 rest of conference seems in play

you also skipped over their worst game. they were trailing NC A&T for most of the second half (obv at home). a&t has one win and its against a div3 team

I think I saw earlier they lost to ohio at home too? But then won @VCU. Weird resume. Always hard to predict what the committee does, but youd think if they finish 9-9 or better in the best conference in the nation theyd surely he in, right?

And yet GT ahead of Dook anyway. Hell, Dook is losing that ACC bubble spot to NC State.

My UMass minutemen have lost to Fordham and St Louis (who is terrible and coached by our former coach Travis Ford). Consecutively, in a row. Derek Kellogg has been our coach for 9 years. We made the tournament once and got blown the **** out by Tennessee.

We gave DK an amazing contract bcuz after ford left for Ok St (who wouldn't for t boone pickens money) we wanted a local "loyal" UMass boy who wouldn't leave as soon as the next better job offer came up. Which he's never gotten because he's just a bad coach.

This is also wrapped up in our FBS football experiment, we don't have a conference. Praying for the Big 12 to scoop up some AAC teams so we can join the AAC at some point. Not happening this year, maybe next year.

I ****ing love the a10. But meh, football has the money.

The point of my post is that Kellogg needs to be fired at the end of the year. He won't though because we can't afford it and he has sick recruits. Have 0 faith he'll do anything with the talent though.

Noone cares. (Nor should you) I'm just a kid whose dad had season tickets to the UMass calipari years as a kid that can't quit them. (I remember Lou Roe and Marcus Camby ****ing up tim duncans **** like it was yesterday)
