In mid-April, during the final minute of a home defeat to the New York Knicks, Voulgaris was seen on the game’s broadcast footage standing up and leaving with about 45 seconds remaining. While the Mavericks were trailing by 10 points at the time, they cut the deficit to six and extended the game seven more possessions before eventually losing.

I think I love Silver's Mt. Rushmore: MJ, Russell, Magic, Bird. Taking all factors into account I think it's pretty sage. It does not mean the four greatest players at all, but kind of combines greatness as a player with huge contributions and achievements in other ways. The most epic, the most historic. Never liked Silver much but I think I'm buying on this.

As far as Kareem, LeBron, Chamberlain, Durant, Oscar and West off the mount:

Giving Russell the nod on this one over KAJ and Wilt though definitely not on greatness as a player.

LeBron has some more time and is more like Bill Clinton in Rushmore terms. So's Kobe.

Durant has a lot more time hopefully. He could take Bird down, by rights if not by sentiment of most.

West off is no problem. Oscar >> West, not close. Great wisdom: Oscar is to West as LeBron is to Havlicek. West is iconic more than epic. Oscar off is a bit of a problem. But he gets trumped on Rushmore, clear cut.

I'm preaching it to yous. Silver is golden on this one.

We agreed with this covering it in I guess GOAT thread. Russell in my thinking is not in the top 500 offensive players in league history and you can't make that up to get anywhere near GOAT vote.

However for the face of the history of the league, they've to the right 4 guys.

Russell (and Auerbach) put it on the map that winning an NBA title was even a thing to the public. Became legend.

Magic and Bird resurrected the league with a rivalry even better and more poignant than Russ/Wilt. Instant legends. Winning 8 out of 9 titles between them as the league rebounded.

MJ -- Airness goes with mountains. Titles. Points. Shoes. Ultra legend. Rushmore is about legend.

The four biggest legends in the history of the league are Russell, Magic, Bird, Jordan. (Any disagreement?) So they go up there, like the president legends, it doesn't mean GOATs. It means GOAT Legends.
