TJ Warren
2nd Round pick
53 pts.
The Suns had three SFs and chose Kelly Oubre and Mikal Bridges over TJ Warren after playing Warren out-of-position as a smallball four. At the same time, they traded down from 6 to 11 to pick up Dario Saric.
So, there are three components to this trade.
- Choosing Oubre and Bridges over Warren as a small forward
- Choosing Saric over Warren as a power forward and generally deciding that he is a bad fit next to Ayton and paid too much to be a backup
- Deciding that they couldn't get a better deal for Warren...the Pacers jumped on the deal because they were afraid the Suns would realize how dumb they were being
They also turned around and used some of the cap space that they created to absorb the contract of Aron Baynes so that they could use the 24th pick on Ty Jerome while giving up the Bucks' 2020 pick. And then they signed Ricky Rubio.
I think the idea to move on from Warren isn't bad, but the Suns had tunnel vision and decided that they had to do it right away, no matter the cost. Plus, Warren's fit next to Ayton was a problem because they selected Ayton when they could have had Doncic.
So, while the basic impulse of wanting to trade Warren was probably the right one, overall lol Suns.
