In what world did Kris Dunn ever not look super awful?

He was the least awful of the rookies after game 1, still awful and it went downhill from there unfortunately.

[edit] subjective and going off memory that is.

The comp that comes to mind is Kevin Martin, but to me that's so apples to oranges. I don't really foresee the Lakers wanting Lonzo to run around of screens and catch and shoot mid/long range jumpers. I agree that if he was just a shooter his mechanics wouldn't be as detrimental, but the whole reason he's so touted is what he can do for others with the ball in his hands. His mechanics are directly marginalizing that skill because the defense doesn't have to respect his shot (going right) and can play him to pass which makes his life a lot tougher.

Out of the pnr, maybe Andre Miller? He had goofy mechanics but they weren't slow. I agree kevin martin is apples and oranges since his shot was so quick. I was thinking of guys like peja, marion, Childress, etc, but you're right there just aren't many cases of a ball dominant PG being able to adjust. It's a lot easier to get by as a spacer with poor mechanics than it is initiating an offense.

I think there's a very good chance that DSJ appears better early on. System and surrounding talent are very underrated around here. Fact of the matter is in a lineup with W3S/Barnes/Dirk/Noel the burden on DSJ isn't big. If Lonzo were drafted by a better team where he was allowed to develop at a slower pace he'd look better too. He's really being thrown into the fire being the starting PG on a team as bad as LA and it will be much easier for opponents to key in on and expose his warts.

This isn't at all meant to be a shat at DSJ btw, I love him and think he could end up being very good, maybe even best player from the draft class.

I don't watch college, but after SL I thought he'd try to jack up 20 shots from terrible areas, but I didn't see much of that.

If DSJ is an average or better 3pt shooter in the NBA he'll be great

Yeah this makes sense. My take on Lonzo is that he obviously has a very low floor, but his ceiling is ridiculously high if he can either fix his mechanics or find a way to get it off going both directions and off the bounce. Obviously the latter is going to be very hard to do given his form, but I don't think it's impossible. Even if that never comes around I still think he can be good, but like top 15 starter good instead of being a star.

I am embarrassed to admit I was high on Dunn and low on Dennis Smith prior to their respective drafts.

I like that they are trying to do things in a different way from the norm.

Started game 1 for Charlotte, nba.com lists him as PF next to Marvin.

One thing I hate is the way BI is being developed. Imo he should be groomed as a 3+D guy first and then introducing other things later. He just looks like he's trying to get good at ten different things and is not picking up any of them.
That's what they were saying on the Lakers board. They're trying to develop him as a playmaker/star and it's just way too much for him. They'd like to see him put on the 3&D role-player path. The problem with that is he can't shoot 3s and is atrocious at D.

I like the Andre Miller comp! Kevin Martin doesn't seem right at all as he was a sick-shooting blackhole that was a great shooter because he was great at drawing fouls. His last season he just totally stopped getting whistles and therefore sucked.

What was there to be high on Dunn? He wasn't even that good in college playing against kids years younger than him. He was the one guy i absolutely did not want.

Also, "a better shooting Rubio" is like a top 15 player and not easy to do as Rubio is elite to GOATish at every aspect of basketball except field goal shooting (which he's incredibly terrible at).

This. I only caught the second half last night but he was left wide open for a 3 and looked terrified. He was looking around to pass so he didn't have to shoot and when he found nobody, he shot and bricked. I felt bad for him for a second.

I haven't watched NBA in many years. Are the Clippers a good team now? Their offense seemed like it was very good last night but perhaps it was just because lol Lakers.

Also WTF with all of these injuries to stars

He's a pretty elite athlete even by NBA standards, and a long wingspan. He has a really good chance to be a great perimeter defender. Offensively though, he's just athletic. poor decision making, no range, etc.
