NBA Season Thread 2016-2017 NBA Season Thread 2016-2017

How many game thread topics have been worthy of discussion outside of the game thread
03-06-2017 , 04:37 PM
it's less about specific topics and more about the free flow of discussion/posting. it just doesn't carry over from thread to thread very often.

I've asked the last 2 years prior to the season and there's been overwhelming support for separate threads from regular posters. For my money, this thread has gone downhill because people are more interested in making useless lists and not actually discussing interesting things that we don't know the answers to. I know that I do most of my discussion with people on twitter now because any time I do bring things like that up in here, they get glossed over in favor of the same discussions over and over again.

But I'm sure that a bunch of low content posts during games will fix that.

Well that's the point, right? I don't think the discussions in game threads produce many interesting discussions, but my question regarding that was an honest one.

Well, what else is there to talk about that isn't trades/acquisitions/coaching changes? Maybe I'm misremembering, but in the TZ hayday but stuff would happen during the games (late game decision making, players playing good/bad, etc) that would lead to discussion topics about the types of seasons players were having and stuff. Just seems harder bc with a gameday thread, ftmp, people stop posting when games are over, so any momentum a discussion could build in that thread is stopped.

Saw today that prior to last night that the Pelicans were shooting like 30% on uncontested jumpers since getting Boogie. Makes sense considering how hard he and Brow were crushing, role players building a damn house with all those bricks.

Agree that IT is getting a little underrated. Obviously the Celts are the perfect team for him because he can eat the usage, but his #'s the last 2 months are just off the charts. To think another another natural scorer turned high-volume guy could replicate that on a defensive team is a reach, if it were so easy then teams would build teams that way more but there are only a handful of guys in the league capable of putting up offensive #'s like that. Even guys like Kemba Walker, Damian Lillard can't sniff what IT has been doing this season. Especially in the 4th quarter.

You're talking a team that has had injuries to every other key player and is still the 5th best record in the league.

Well in the old days analytics were still young and we all enjoyed batting around ideas and we had actual smart people like kbfc and assani participating.

Now the kbfcs and seths have gotten paid for this so they no longer post, and people like myself are a little long in the tooth to really give a **** about nuanced analytics (if it's discussed I'll read and provide my opinion, but im not doing work away from the thread on basketball like I used to in limited doses, and I'm sure others are the same).

And besides now we have rapm so Thayer effectively has the game solved so why discuss anything?

There were also some really good articles on bourbonstreeshots.com about 3 potential paths forward this offseason for da Canz.

Basically they can operate above the cap if they want another big contract in addition to Jrue, below it if they keep Jrue and want to sign a bunch of role players for depth, or Jrue walks and you maybe get a trade exception or possibly nothing. Not sure which I prefer just yet tbh.

Kevin Durant signing with the Warriors not helping the thread much IMO.

One of the best things about sports is talking about who can win the title and besides Cleveland it's just really hard to see anyone beating them. And even teams futures have been almost pushed back 2-3 years because of how formidable GS looks.

Don't they have bird rights on Jrue? How much cap space would the pelicans have if they resign Jrue using his bird rights? Still can't believe they didn't move Asik

I dont think they have the picks to move to convince a team to take on the Turkish Scammer
03-06-2017 , 05:53 PM
Pretty decent chance they just end up stretching Asik imo

This seems like the only option.

Yup, by far the least painful way out. Nobody wants him and to top it all off apparently he's lost a bunch of weight due to being sick.

As some itt know, I've been meaning to provide original analytics for quite a while. Finally doing it. Insert Witty SN, that Bron hating *******, has been helping out too. We're just about ready to build some models, visualize some ****, and whatnot.

These pro teams seemingly pay peanuts to guys like me afaict, so I'll only stop posting once a media outlet hires me.

Any inside info on Jokic tonight?
03-06-2017 , 07:35 PM
Went home, didn't go to shootaround, questionable with illness.

I thought Denver was free monies even -12.5 but I would stay away from them sans any further information.

Tonight I'm the worlds biggest KAT/Wiggins fan.

http://www.espn.com/espnradio/play?id=18836446

The Cavs analytics team built a custom NBA Jam cabinet with all the players replaced by members of the Cavs front office, like with individual graphics for each front office member, starts at like 23:00.
