Round 2 / pick 76: Vlade Divac

When looking to build around Larry Legend, a solid big man is key. Well Vlade is more than solid, he's great. A very underrated player throughout the course of his career, he was a key contributor to very successful Lakers and Kings teams.

Though a traditional post scorer who commands a double would be ideal with Bird, those are rare and any left has too many deficincies that Vlade simply doesn't have. Vlade does many things well. He's a strong rebounder, an efficient scorer, and a very good, solid defender, bordering on great. He's also a deft passer, though he turns it over slightly more than I'd like. Though not known as a post scorer, he was at the very least effective down there as well as slashing across the lane, scoring in the mid teens for almost all of his career. As an added plus, he was extremely healthy, especially if we're tossing the age 23 season.

I like the pairing with Bird because it solidifies my front line and their strengths. Bird can count on Vlade to finish when he draws doubles and threads a needle to get him the ball. When Vlade slashes across the lane, defenses tend to collapse, and just a little space is all Bird needs. They both have high b-ball IQs. They'll man the boards and play solid defense. They'll piss off the opposition.

Basically, they'll own. Only real knock is Serbs aren't really pure white. Oh well.

Career accomplishments:
1-time All Star (give the guy a break he played in the golden age of centers)
39th in career Win Shares Above Average (6th in the '94-'95 season)
Picked 76th by me
Career PER - 17.7
Career TS% - .543

Round #2/Pick #77: Michael Redd

I am surprised Redd has dropped this far he looks to be the last person left with a career PER of 20+, this alone figures to get him drafted higher I would think. His upside is he scores, shoots trey bombs well, he has played a majority of the games from 24 on. I am also able to draft him as he hits his first breakout season missing his first three years of little play. He is mediocre at everything else.

I felt like he did pure offense the best out of all the availables. He should play well with Magic, if you look at Showtime Lakers 2/3s the played similar to Redd(save Worthy).

This was a tough pick, but my list I had built projecting who would go and who would be available when I would pick again, the following players went who I thought I had a shot at(not in order) Moncrief, Nance, Robertson, Mullin, Daughtery, Laimbeer, and Cummings. I made another quick list this afternoon and all other players had one reason why I thought this was too high for them to go here. Redd seemed like a ok pick here. I think he is better pick even as a one dimensional player than some of the picks that have already been made in this round. I don't love it, but I'll have to take it.

Round #2/ Pick 78: Horace Grant

He is a great players to built around James. With some many of you going for two big mans in the secound round, they aren't that many great froncourt players left, so going big was a no-brainer. I just could not afford to wait another 40 pick, or else I would have no shot at competing against the best frontcourt.
Grant gives me what I need. He is a decent rebounder and solid scorer and was very good to use the attention drawn by Jordan and Pippen so he should fit nicely with James. I don't need him to score 30, but just to be efficient offensively. Plus, he was a very good passing big
The main reason for this pick is that Grant was an awesome post defender, one of the best I've seen. With him and James, my team is probably going be good defensively and I won't get destroyed inside.
His stats are not overwhelming( 12 points 8 boards, 16 career PER) but he has great durability and he is a proven winner. I consider him to be a great role player, and that's what I want surrounding James. He proved that he can be a great number two when he helped Pippen lead the Bulls to 55 wins.

1 x All Star

Round #2/ Pick 79: Eddie Jones

Eddie Jones is the BPA (Best Player Available) as WELL as the best pairing with Shaq. WOW, a double whammy. I'm going to list Eddie's accomplishments; follow it up with his stats; than detail my team plans.

Team BobboFitos:
PG -
SG - Eddie Jones
SF -
PF -
C - Shaquille O'Neal

Eddie Jones is a 14 year active veteran, standing 6'6 and weighing ~190. A member of 3 All-Star teams (1997 - 25 yrs old, 1998 - 26 yrs old, 2000 - 28 yrs old). A member of 3 All-Defensive teams (1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-00) and 1 All-NBA team (1990-00).

Eddie Jones cames into the NBA at the age of 23 where he put up a PER of 16.3. Not too shabby, except we don't count that. Want continued excellence? His following seasons...
17.0, 17.3, 18.0, 18.5, 19.9, 18.8, 17.5, 18.9, 16.7. His career PER, which includes his decline, is 16.7.

Eddie Jones has a clean bill of health, as well - from the age of 24 to 34, he missed a combined 54 games (Or fewer than 6 games/year).

Eddie has a career ORtg of 111 and DRtg of 103, peaking at an astounding 97 2000-2001. He's had 8 (!) seasons of double digit offensive win shares, and 6 (!) seasons of double digit defensive win shares. Career +92.0 WSAA.

For more conventional stat users, Eddie boasts a career per 36 min mark of 15.5 PPG, 4.2 RPG, and 3.1 APG. (Only 1.7 TOPG and 1.8 SPG - he creates more TOs then he himself commits, which is a HUGE plus) His best season, @28 yrs old, saw him put up 20.1/4.8/4.2.

Eddie is a terrific shooter, to boot - career 37.3% 3pt shooter and 80.9% FT shooter, has a career 55.4% TS mark. Interestingly, he's 2nd among active players in 3-pt Field Goals made. (Behind Ray Allen, obviously)

Alright, lets move into how he fits in with Shaq. First, I haven't even decided the direction of my team - with a young Shaq and high-flying Eddie, I could go small since both players run the floor very well - I could go big, since Eddie can play the 2 or 3 (and guard both) with ease. I can slow it down, grind it out, since both have played in systems (ie. the Heat) that featured a half court offense. Shaq thrives with shooters around him, and luckily I have one of the best on my team!

Further, people have argued, "what wins ballgames, defense or offense?". I say - "both". Superior balance. With Shaq (best offensive big man force in the game ever, and one of the best defensive bigs as well) I have coupled Eddie, who is a superior 2nd option and incredibly valuable perimeter defender. So, I am going to try to have the best offensive AND defensive efficiency.

It's worth noting as well, Eddie is one of the most low-profile, hard-working types, which for my team is important, since I want Shaq to know he's the man. (And not have to ever worry he's not) Eddie will accept his role as the 2nd option gladly and play with his heart. Eddie will likely take my technical foul shots over Shaq ATM, too

Steroid Boy, you sir are on the clock.

Round #2/Pick 80

Marcus Camby

With the selection of Camby my team becomes even more devasting on the defensive. Finding a pairing with MJ really isn’t that complicated so Camby is the pick. He has been a defensive force for almost as long as he has been in the league. Defense wins championships and with the addition of Camby my interior defense is solidified. With the lack of quality bigmen Camby is a fantastic value pick at the end of round 2. There are definatley injury concerns as he as not played 82 games once in his career, but his longevitiy and dominance on the defensive end over that time period cannot be overlooked. Camby had the top defensive rating in the 2000-2001 season and won DPOY 6 years later. Since the 2003-2004 season Camby has averaged no less than 2.6 blocks a game and 10 boards a game. With Jordan locking down the perimeter and Camby controlling the interior my team will be difficult to score against.

Round 3, Pick 1: Antonio Keithflen McDyess (no, that's not a nickname, its his middle name)

Round #3/Pick #81: Antonio Keithflen McDyess (no, that's not a nickname, its his middle name)

McDyess was drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers with the 2nd overall selection in 1995. McDyess was known for his versitility, mostly based on his impressive explosiveness, strength and agility. His main skills included a mid-range jump shot (which he continued to refine over his career), solid post defense and tenacious rebounding. Before his devastating (and I argue a "freak" injury) torn patella tendon early in 2001, McDyess was simply a beast. His durability is evidenced by his play following from injury. While he had lost explosiveness, McDyess continued to improve his other skills and played 77, 82, 82, 78 games in the next 4 seasons. If that isn't enough evidence, Victor suggests, "u can hire assanis doctors and he becomes amare."

Pre-injury, McDyess averaged 18/9 with 1 spg and almost 1.73 bpg. Post-injury, he returned in a 6th man role on the Pistons (with less playing time as before), but still rebounding and shooting at the same efficiency per 36 minutes. His defense and basketball IQ had improved with experience, allowing him to stay competitive on one of the best teams in the league.

Reasoning: Versatility. McDyess possesses a myriad of skills that can help a variety of teams. He is an impressive post defender, who often is depended on to guard his opponents' centers. His speed and agility allow him to actively participate in the fast break, while his reliable jumpshot, coupled with superior finishing skills around the basket, makes him a threat in the half-court offense.

For those that didn't have the privilege of watching McDyess, this is a 3 minute youtube of dunk after dunk, after dunk. There is a must-watch series at 1:30 of about 10 ridiculous blocks where he just destroys shots.

My team is far:
SG: Sid "The Squid" Moncrief
SF: Vince "Vinsanity" Carter
PF: Antonio Keithflen McDyess

Round 3 Pick 83 Kiki Vandeweghe

Vandeweghe is too much value at this pick to pass up despite probably having more pressing needs elsewhere. One of the best pure scorers in the entire draft, Vandeweghe was absolutely beastly from ages 23-28 when a fluke back injury from a fall that was worsened by him trying to play through it instead of letting it heal caused his play to decline.

But lets look at Vandeweghe's stats. His career offensive rating, even including his decline, is the 5th highest of all time. His career TS% is .594 and from ages 23-27 it was over .600 every year. In 1982-83 at the age of 24, he put up an astounding 31.8 Offensive Win Shares and followed it up with 28.3 the next season. Making this even more impressive is that he did this without ever having incredibly high usage ratings. Over 6 years from 23-28 he totaled 151 Offensive Win Shares with his highest Usage % being only 27.8. This shows that because of how incredibly efficient he is, Kiki can put up huge numbers without demanding the ball constantly, which is huge for this format where every team will have at least a few star players demanding shots.

From ages 23-28 Vandeweghe averaged 25.3 PPG while only missing 20 total games over that 6 year period. There is no reason to think that he is predisposed to any sort of injury risk.

Round 3; Pick 84 Baron Davis

Baron Davis is a an all purpose point guard who's entire game is fundamentally sound. At 6 foot 3, his strength and abilities are rare. He has the unique skill set to do it all, score, drive the lane, create his own shot, dish the rock, and rebound. He posesses all the tools which make him a true triple-double threat night in and night out. He is a finesse player, but also has an in your face style which he uses on defense and to drive the lane. He's also a guy who loves to rebound and run the break. Although a definate threat to score first, he also can pass in the lane after drawing the double team. Davis is a great fit for my roster, so far my other players like to run the floor which should make my team great in transition. Davis also brings some defensive capabilities to the team in regards to rebounding and steals. Easily the best PG acquisition for this squad.

Listed below are his stats from his first season at 24 years old to now.

Round 3; Pick 86; Detlef Schrempf

Detled Schrempf's biggest asset is his versatility. He played three different positions in the NBA (2-guard off the bench when he first came into the league with the Mavs, backup 3 and 4 for Indiana, and a 3 for Seattle and Portland). He was a very good rebounder (averaged over 9 per 36 minutes during his four-year stint in Indiana). He was an excellent passer for a forward (four seasons with Asst rate > 20, and averaged 6 per game in his best season). He was and extremely efficient and versatile scorer - he had a season with a .618 TS% where he only attemped 0.5 3-pointers a game, and a season with a .641 TS% where he attempted 2.3 3-pointers a game. He could score from deep; he could score from up-close. He was also very durable - putting up an 18.4 PER season at age 36. While his per-game stats may make it seem like took a long time to mature, his per-36 stats show that he already came into the league as a very good player, and this view is confirmed by his immediate contributions after the trade to Indiana granted him more playing time.

Lest you think that I was just cherry-picking good seasons to make my points in the previous paragraph, I compared Detlef's career numbers to three other SFs who were recently picked: Cummings, Mullin, and Aguirre. Detlef was the least prolific scorer of the four, but with Arenas on my squad, I was looking for a solid second option on offense, not a 1A. Detlef is tied with Mullin for the best 3PT%, and is a close second in TS%, miles ahead of the other guys. Detlef had the most Assts/36, while also having the second fewest TOs. Only Cummings was a better rebounder, and not by that much. Detlef has the highest ORtg and the second-highes DRtg of the four. He leads the pack in WSAA by a very healthy margin (in fact, it's almost as high as the other three put together - 89.5 vs 97.0). And he is the only one to have a crappy indie rock song named after him. I did not make these comparisons to disparage the other players - the three picks I compared Detlef to were all rightfully praised. My only point is that Detlef is really, really good. And German.

As far as how he fits on my team, I think his shooting and versatility meshes well with Gilbert's game. Gilbert can certainly benefit from a deadly three-point shooter that he can dish to when the defense collapses on his drives to the basket, and Detlef certainly fits the bill. Also, his accuracy from mid-range makes his a good pick-and-roll partner for Gilbert. While Gilbert is a pretty good passer, he has a score-first mentality, so I also wanted to have a good passing forward who could be a secondary distributor on my team. Additionally, his ability to play multiple positions will also allow me to target BPA later in the draft.

Yep, Ron Artest is my pick. I know he's a headcase and I know he might go later if I don't take him here. But, if you look at my team, tell me this guy doesn't fit. We've got the modern day Bad Boys here. First, you've got Reggie Miller AKA the Villian, the Spoiler. Then you've got the original Bad Boy in Dennis Rodman. I feel like there is no better way to strengthen this already brutally tough team by welcoming in the new age bad boy Ron Artest.

Here are his numbers from age 24:

18.9 points
5.7 rebounds
3.5 assists
2.2 steals

His FG% and 3FG% have both gone up drastically in the last couple of years indicating that he is taking better shots as well.

That gives me Gary Payton, Rasheed Wallace and Tyson Chandler. The numbers do not tell the whole story with Battier. He is not a flashy player but he is the very definition of a team-oriented basketball player. He makes everyone on the court (well, his teammates) better, he is unselfish, fundamentally sound and is known for his hustle.

I was originally targeted a Center but the situation changed, which actually has turned out well because of Battier’s versatility, which is an absolute must for the type of team I am building. I need size but I also need unique skill sets and he has this. He has the size to play inside and the range to shoot the trey, which he does efficiently. Battier is a plus defender that can defend multiple positions equally effective—SG,SF,PF. Round 3, pick #90 - Otis Thorpe

Otis Thorpe is one of the more underrated players in NBA history. He was a very efficient scorer (.584 TS%, .546 efg%), went for about 17/10/3 during most of his career, and was a solid defender also. Thorpe was also a deft passer. He also didn't miss a single game from age 24-29, and had 14 straight healthy and productive seasons to start his career. He could lead his team in scoring or take 2nd man role, as he did behind Dream in the early 90s and during the first championship run.

I have a dominant defense with Thorpe and Wallace inside and Iverson at the point. I have 3 guys who have proven themselves as healthy and productive players. Giving Iverson a low post scorer was also key. Thorpe is 39th all time in defensive win shares and 46th all time in offensive win shares. That TS% puts him at 37th all time. My team is taking shape and I like it so far. I now have elite options at scoring, rebounding, defense and shooting %.

Round 3, Pick #91:
SG Michael Finley

For the five years focused on in this draft, Finley was one hell of a player. He averaged 20+ points in all five seasons, played in every game each year but one, and still managed to average more than 5 rpg and almost 5 apg, while heading to the All-Star game twice during that span (and many feel he was snubbed on at least two other occasions). His PER during this stretch went 19, 19, 19, 18, 18. He was a member of the NBA All-Rookie First team, has been an excellent FT shooter his entire career, and is a lifetime 37% 3-point shooter (96th all-time) without being one whose game was limited to threes during this stretch. Especially during this timeframe, he was the best or second-best player on a perennial playoff squad in the Mavericks, doing a little bit of everything as well as being the emotional leader of the squad even once Dirk became its best player.

He's an AWESOME off-ball option for this offense. He stretches the floor with his 3-point ability, can run the break effectively, passes well, rebounds very well for a 2-guard, and has the height and versatility to defend three, maybe even four different positions on the court (it will take some remembering to recognize that Finley was the lone versatile, adequate defender on a team full of terrible ones).

Round 3 pick 92
forward/center Tom Chambers

Super solid scoring big man to pair up with bynum. Can shoot from anywhere on the floor. Decent rebounder for his career at 7 per game. Solid positional defender, wouldnt get many blocks , but got a lot of steals for a center ( almost 1.0 per game ) and a good passer at 2-3 assists per game. My favorite attribute of his is the amount of times he went to the line he averages 7 ft attempts per game in his prime and shot them at over 81%. TFG% of 54.2 for his career. Top ten in MVP voting twice. All star MVP. First 9 years of his career he missed less than 20 games total, which is very dependable to cope with bynums uncertainty.

Best 2 seasons:
he averaged 25.7 8.4 2.9 with 1 steal per game
27.2 7.0 2.3 with 1 steal per game
Imagine pick and rolls with chambers and wade, this will stretch out all defenses as chambers will be shooting from all over the floor and can also take it to the basket and get to the foul line. This should be a fun combo.

Round 3 pick 93

SG Hersey Hawkins

After making my first two picks, TMac and Tony Parker, the general consensus was that both guys would be great at getting towards the basket, but neither was a particularly good outside shooter and I'd need to get some outside shooting to stretch the defense. I agree, and for that reason, my pick is Hersey Hawkins. A career .394 three point shooter and .585 TS%, which is dragged down considerably by his last few years, I think he compares favorably with Reggie Miller, a poor man's Reggie Miller, but considering this is the third round, I think it's good value.

Defensively, I don't remember enough of his games to comment specifically, but he did have five years of double digit defensive win shares. His defensive rating is all over the place, some years it's in the 110s, others it's in the low 100s. I'll assume he's at least a decent defender, although his size could be an issue against bigger 2 guards. One point in his favor is that he is a workhorse, only missing 7 games in his first 10 seasons. Should be no injury concerns at all with him.

This pick does define my next two rounds. I have to go big, and while I have a few names in mind that I hope will fall, everyone has underestimated the amount of talent available so far, so it could be slim pickings in the latter part of the 4th and 5th. That's days if not weeks away though, so I'll deal with it then. For now:

Round 3, Pick 95: Arvydas Sabonis

First I'm going to acknowledge all of the faults with this pick. He came into the league at 31 after he had lost some of the mobility from his salad days. He played only 26 mpg in the first 6 years of his career. He would miss anywhere from 10-20 games per season. Cool.

Now here's this:
Arvydas was the complete package. He could shoot (.574 career TS%), he could pass (3.1 assists per 36), he could rebound (10.9 rebounds per 36), and he could defend (career 97 DRtg and averaged just under 10 DWS/season). He fits in perfectly with Hill and Kemp because he'll spread the floor (he could play inside and out) and will also play great team ball, which along with Hill's great passing will make up for Kemp's passing deficiencies. With how few big men are left, I figure I'd take one that could take just about any center heads up. My team will now be a weapon on both ends, as I will space the floor, have great passing and great finishing. Now I just need to add some shooting. And there should be no doubts about my team on the defensive end as I have three VERY solid defensive players (all had great individual defensive numbers and also their teams were consistently in the top 10 in the NBA in defensive efficiency.)

Oh yeah and his PER average was 21.2. Not too shabby.

Still not convinced? Check out the youtube clip (NBA starts around 2:20, but the international clips are fun to watch as well. Also the song is da bomb so blast your speakers homie.)

With Daugherty drawing defenders, and Pippen being able to take care of ball-handling duties, I felt like I needed somebody to catch and shoot. So, I'm drafting:

Dale Ellis

After languishing with limited minutes in Dallas for the first few years in the league, Ellis made his way to Seattle, where he exploded. His first four years in Seattle, Ellis put up 24.9, 25.8, 27.5, and 23.5 per game. One of the best three point shooters in NBA history, Dale shot 40% from the arc for his career. I feel that pairing Ellis with Pippen and Daugherty gives me a well rounded offense to start the draft.

Round 3, Pick 97: PF/C Andris Biedrins

Biedrins allows me to pick and roll with KJ all day every day. If teams overcompensate to stop 'Nique, Biedrins' incredible hands will give KJ an easy target. Has terrific movement for his size. He's still a kid, just turned 22, but led the league in offensive rating this season. Has a career TS% of .611 and a eFG% of .614. He's a monster on the glass with over 11 rebounds per 36 minutes the past three seasons. Also solid on D, but needs to stay out of foul trouble.

I think he's a perfect fit with KJ and 'Nique. Yeah I could use some D, but none of my guys are terrible on D, and they're all terrific on O and have incredibly rare skill sets. I think in this format, being great at a few things is better than being good at many things. Depending on who else I draft, Biedrins also allows me to play small or big.

Team so far:
PG Kevin Johnson
SG/SF Dominique Wilkins
PF/C Andris Biedrins

im goin with tayshaun. 4 time defensive 2nd team. hasnt missed a game in 5 yrs (thanks tom.) owns reggie millers soul.

tayshaun obv is known for his d. he is quick enough to take on guards and lanky enough to check forwards too. hes shut down a number of great players including lebron.

offensively he can fit in any offense, and will play within the offense. he can knock down the open jumper including from 3 and has long arms so his shot is rarely blocked. he can also drive and hit a baby hook.

my team has a great paint scorer in amare and a great shooter/passer in price. prince will provide lock down defense and spot scoring when needed. he also is a smart player that moves the ball well.

KLJ selects:
Round #3/Pick #100 (via Epeen): Mark Eaton

Eaton was drafted by the Utah Jazz with the 72nd overall pick in 1982. He hadn't played much in college at UCLA (go bruins), and was drafted largely because of his size (listed between 7'3"/275 and 7'4"/290). Utah coach Fank Layden defended his pick on the basis that, "you can't teach height". Over the next 11 years, Eaton became known for his stifling defense, rebounding ability, and occasional dunks on offense. He became the defensive stopper in the shadow of Stockton & Malone, and the Jazz saw great success.

Awards earned during his career:
5 All-Defensive teams (three 1st teams)
2 Defensive Player of the Year
1 All-Star team

Statistics: Eaton is the career leader in blocks with 3.5 per game, and also boasts the highest season average (5.56 bpg) in history (both very unlikely to ever be broken). Among his other accomplishments, Eaton led the league in blocks 4 times, games played 4 times, defensive rebounding 1 time, Defensive Rating 1 time, and Defensive Win Shares 1 time. He posted 9 straight years of over 10 Defensive Win Shares, averaging 15 DWS/year over that span. Eaton also boasts a career Drtg of 100. He was hugely durable, missing only 9 games in his first 10 years (what's in the water in Utah?).

Reasoning: Defense. Having two 5-time All-Defensive players is huge, not to mention two 2-time winners of the Defensive Player of the Year award. Eaton has the size to contend with the biggest centers (unlike Rodman, Ben Wallace, Biedrins, Chandler, and others) and is not a complete offensive liability. Seeing as scoring was not a priority (with three 20 ppg scorers), drafting an anchor to my defense was a top priority (seeing as they are so rare).

My team is far:
SG: Sid "The Squid" Moncrief
SF: Vince "Vinsanity" Carter
PF: Antonio McDyess
C: Mark Eaton
