Round 1 - pick #26

I don't think there are any PGs left on the board w/ Payton's combination of playmaking ability and tenacious defense - possibly the best defense among modern-era PG's.

Round #1/Pick #27: Steve Nash

Wow, I really wanted all 4 players who just went. Well I guess this will set the tone for the rest of my draft.

This isn't a best player available selection, so feel free to argue that I took him too high. This is, instead, the player who I am going to build my team around. Looking at the other selections, it looks like I'm the first to really define a style of play, but whatever. Let's do this.

He's 33 and just finished putting up his 7th straight 20+ PER season. The season right before that was a lowly 19.6. Sure, he's not a defensive stopper (he managed a spectacular 0.0 defensive win shares 5 years ago with Dallas) but he can run a fast paced offense and rain it from deep. There's my gameplan people, feel free to sabotage. This is actually my biggest worry since with a 9 player roster I'm going to need everyone to contribute.

There are some slight injury concerns since he always seems to be nursing something, but he's player 75+ games each of the past 7 years.

I guess it's customary to list some awards now:
2 time MVP
6 time All Star
Led NBA 3 times in assists, twice in true shooting %, twice in assist %
Top 10 in offensive win shares each of last 7 years, 4th place overall among active
Tuq man crush
SE Lord and Savior

Oh yeah, and at 1 year younger than Jason Kidd, who would you rather have for the next 5 years?

Tracy McGrady

Like mmbt0ne, I too was hoping for at least one of the last few picks to continue to get overlooked, but it was not to be. So, I'll take TMac. Since we'll be getting him at age 24, let's take a look at his career up to that point.

Leads the league in scoring at age 23. A PER of over 30, which is the 11th highest total of all time, only behind names such as Chamberlain, Jordan, Robinson, and O'Neal. Pretty heady territory.

I don't care if he's never reached the second round, he's too good to pass up on, and besides, I'm not a believer in all that clutch nonsense anyways. This is an alternate world, maybe he'll ride the positive wave of variance given a second chance and new teammates. I like this pick, I think it's great, and with that, we're off to the doctor's to make sure his back never bothers him again.

Round 1 pick 29

Dwayne Wade - im puttin you in my fav 5

At age 24 the guy was already averaging 27 points a game, while shooting 50% from the field at a guard position which is so rare. He averages nearly 10 Ft attempts a game and shoots them at 80%. Whats better than all those numbers ?... He actually does better in the playoffs. Just look at his stats leading up to his 3rd year ( 24 ) where he won a championship being the best player on the team. Since we are building a franchise, talk about a guy who can sell seats with his explosiveness.

Man, I've gone back and forth on this a lot...

Round 1, Pick 30: Yao Ming

-#1 Pick in 2002 NBA Draft
-Six-time All-Star
-Three-time All-NBA Team
-20th in League History in PER (doesn't yet appear on basketball-reference because he hasn't quite played enough minutes)

He's the best center remaining on the board, and he still may have only scratched the surface of what he can do. Starting from age 24, he's given you 18, 22, 25, and 22 ppg along with 8.4, 10.2, 9.4, and 10.8 rpg. He shoots free throws better than any other premier center in the history of the league at 82%. Averages 2 blocks per game throughout his career and shoots 52%, which is good for 40th ever.

Obviously, his down-side is what seems to be his propensity for injury and his waning endurance...both of which may be caused by his extensive international play for China.

We here at Team Sammy will be negotiating a settlement with the Chinese government that would allow Yao more time off. If they won't accept, we will bring in a hypnotist and get him to defect.

Round 1, pick #31, Allen Iverson

At this point in the draft, many of the multi-year all NBA studs and hall of famers have been picked. I want to build my team around an all-around talent. There's noboby better left on the board, in my humble opinion, than Allen Iverson, AI.

The third most prolific scorer in NBA history, with 27.7 ppg, behind only Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain, AI will be an offensive force on team fanmail, no doubt. Not only can AI score at will, but he can do some damage on the defensive end as well. For 3 straight years, from the 00-01 season thru the 02-03 season, Iverson led the NBA in steals per game. Some may say he took some bad shots and had too many TO's, but he's had to carry too many teams on his back. In this league, he will have some help.

In addition to his basketball skills, the 6'0" 165 lb. PG has such passion and a burning desire to win. The kid has put his body at risk many times over in the pursuit of making a play. He loves the game and wants to win and lead. I couldn't think of a better guy to build around at age 24.

Here are some of his many accomplished stats and awards:
Career averages of -
27.7 Points
6.3 Assists
2.3 Steals
3.8 Rebounds
41.8 Minutes
21.4 PER

Round 1, Pick #32, Shawn Marion

If we are talking all-around talent, The Matrix is that gift.

At the age of 24, he had a PER of 21.3, he had a DRtg of 98 and at the age of 22 he led the league in Defensive Win Shares at 21.1 and is in the top 10 every year in DWS. We are talking about winning and Marion is top 7 in win shares each year.

The man scores, scores at an efficient rate, rebounds, blocks shots, and steals. At his peak he was just a shade under 22/12 while stealing 2 a game and blocking just under 2 a game. He has been the one defensive force for Pho during their inability to play defense--you see what happens when he leaves. He is a career 82% ft shooter and shoots 48% from the field. Probably my favorite thing about him is that I will get 79-81 games out of him each year and 38-40 minutes a night.

Shawn Marion is my chameleon that will adapt to the team that I build around him. I am excited about this player.

He is a 4 time All-Star and has made the All-NBA third team twice but more importantly he vacations with our Lord:

Since the 1979-1980 season, there have been six players who averaged at least 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists per game, with a PER over 25. The list: Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Kevin Garnett, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, and Grant Hill (LBJ was .1 RPG away, so we can toss him in there too). Hill did this at age 24, averaging 21.4, 9.0, and 7.3 with a 25.5 PER, while leading a Pistons team that had no other player over a 17 PER to 54 wins (and a 57 win pythag). At 24 years old. After his first 6 seasons, only two players in NBA history had accumulated the stats (points, rebounds, and assists) he had: Larry Bird and Oscar Roberston.

Defensively he was very solid. At 24, his best season (the year mentioned above), he also posted a defensive rating of 99.7 with 17.3 win shares.

6 straight all-star games. 5 straight all-NBA teams (4 2nds and 1 1st). Top 10 in NBA voting 5 straight years (3rd in 96-97). The prototype for how the small forward position is to be played. I'm ecstatic to build my team around such a multi-dimensional, hard-working, unselfish player like Grant Hill.

Round 1, Pick #34 - Reggie Miller

I picked Reggie Miller for three reasons:

1. He is one of the most clutch players in NBA history.
2. He is one of the toughest competitors in NBA history.
3. He is one of the best showmen in NBA history.

Some significant statistics include:

1. All-time leader in 3-pointers made.
2. Led the league in free throw shooting 5 times and was over 90% 9 times.
3. 5-time all-star (only five?)
4. He is 4th in career offensive winshares behind MJ, Malone, and Stockton; he is in front of Barkley, Magic, and Shaq!!
5. He is 9th in career winshares, again on a very impressive list:http://www.basketball-reference.com/...ws_career.html

Also, don't forget:

1. 25 point 4th quarter in playoffs vs. Knicks
2. 8 points in final seconds in playoffs vs. Knicks
3. Game-winner against Jordan's Bulls in 98 playoffs.

Just watch this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=463f9vIeO6E&feature=related

Very memorable clips, I am very happy to get Reggie with this pick...

Round 1; Pick 35 - Dikembe Mutombo

Mutombo has a well-earned reputation as a defensive stalwart. He is one of only two players to ever win the Defensive Player of the Year Award four times, and had thee years in a row where he led the league in blocks per game. Everyone knows what a great defender and intimidator he is; here are the other factors that make him a great pick here:

- Incredible longevity and consistency. Was in the top 5 in blocks per game and top 6 in boards per game an incredible 11 years in a row. Since he came into the league at 25, I am benefiting from his entire peak.

- Contrary to popular belief, he was not a black hole on offense. Was a double figure scorer for 11 years in a row. He was never a high-volume scorer, of course, but he was very efficient - leading the NBA in true shooting percentage in 1999-2000, and finishing in the top 10 two other times. And of course, he could also help the offensive cause with his offensive rebounding - having led the NBA in offensive rebound percentage in 2000-2001. Advanced statistical measures show the value of his efficiency; believe it or not, he was in the top 10 in offensive rating twice in his career (9th in 1998-1999, and 5th in 1999-2000).

- Don't forget that he accumulated his counting stats while playing a good part of his career on one of the slowest teams (Hawks) in one of the slowest eras in the NBA. His first three years in Atlanta, his teams had a pace factor of 86.8, 87.7, and 85.3! (As far as versatility goes, though, Mutombo has shown that he can play on fast-paced teams too - his second year in the leage, the Nuggets were the third-fastest team in the NBA with a pace factor of 99.8).

Accomplishments:
8-time All-Star
4-time DPOY
1-time All-NBA 2nd team
2-time All-NBA 3rd team
6-time All-NBA Defensive team (1st or 2nd)

21st in the NBA in Win Shares Above Average
9th in career Defensive Win Shares
100th in career Offensive Win Shares

Round 1 pick 36 - Chris Webber

OK so when I came up on the clock, I had a dozen players in my head to pick from and finally settled on C-Webb. What people remember most about Webber is his most recent years when he was plagued with injury. The unfortunate thing is most of this can be attributed to a freak injury against the Lakers in 2003 where his knee exploded running down the court with noone touching him. If this never happened, we could be talking about one of the greatest PF's of all time.

A 20/10/5 guy over his career, (his scoring was even higher from the age of 24 when we are starting until the injury), Webber was a major scoring threat, a good rebounder and one of the better passers from the position. However people forget he was also very good on defense with a defensive rating of 100.96 (71st all time of any position). Webber's definitely going to make the majority of his opponents work very hard to score on him. His PER of 20.91 over his career is 41st all time, not too shabby either. His all around game gives me a great cornerstone to build around.

Round 1, Pick 37 - James Worthy (Re-Post for Bigcat with Image)

Although not the flashiest of players, James Worthy aka "Big Game James" left his mark on the game of basketball by excelling in all 3 stages of a storied career. He was a high school all-american averaging nearly 22 points and 13 rebounds a game. He was the NCAA Tournament MVP. And he won 3 NBA Championships, being named MVP once in which he had a triple double in the game 7 of the NBA Finals against the Pistons. He was a integral part of the Showtime Era and his play added to the greatness of the players around him. He was a clutch performer and a favorite to many. Worthy spent a career being overshadowed by the accomplishments of Magic, Jabbar and Jordan. But true NBA fans and historians alike, recognize his on the court excellence and praise him as one of the greats.

*Crowd goes nuts* WOOOOOOOOO

Never has an athlete frustrated me and made me love him on more occasions. There have been month-long stretches in the NBA where I felt he was better than Kobe or LeBron, and times when I would have shipped him out of town for Ron Artest. But in the end, Paul Pierce is the man.

He was once stabbed multiple times, has been on way too many losing teams without ever requesting a trade, was made captain despite a more introverted personality, and played many years out of position at the two guard when he is truly a small forward.

Starting at the age of 24, he had PER's of 22.3, 22.7, 19.4, 21.8, 23.6, 21.7, and this past year with two other all-stars dropped a tad below 20.

He has a postup game, a midrange game, can launch it from deep, gets to the line like the best of them, and is pretty efficient given his high usage. He can rebound incredibly well from the wing spot, averaging over 6.4 boards per game for his career. He also is one of the best wing defenders in the league when he wants to be, and has a career steals average of 1.6 per game, recording over 2 steals a game in one season.

He is a 3 time All-NBA third team selection, and six time all-star. Paul Pierce.

Round #1/Pick #40: Vince "Vinsanity" Carter

Easily one of the most popular players of this modern era, Vince Carter had (and still has) the game to back it up. The casual fan loves his leaping ability, swagger, and potential to do something ridiculous every play. Stat-heads will be pleased to see that he posted 8 straight 20+ PER seasons, and his 21.7 career PER is higher than a surprisingly substantial amount of players picked already. Like Pierce, VC has stayed efficient despite a very high usage %.

Round #2 Pic #42 Chauncey Billups 6'3 PG

I know this is techincally a reach in terms of BPA as in a vaccum I think there are a good 5-10 better players than Billups, however no one left in the draft can do what he can, and that is defend/shoot at a ridiculously elite level at the PG spot. He is one of the best shooters ever, shooting ft's at .886 for his career (been a lot higher these last few years), Shoots .385 career from 3's (also been a lot higher during his peak). His true shooting percentage has been in the .600's multiple times during his career as well. He is always among the elite PG defenders, and imo is one of the top 5 best PG defenders in this draft (mostly due to a lack of elite PG defenders). He is also a very good dribbler/post up guard/passer. He does it all, and ontop of that he is clutch, his name isn't big shot for a reason. He was imo the most underrated player in the last 5 years (although he recently has started getting well deserved props). He is still 31 years old and yet to decline.

Also at the end of the game, when I am leading, I am always confident getting in his hands with his ridiculous ft shooting.
People say it took a while for him to break out, which is true, but a lot of those years were before he turned 24. At the age 24 I already get him just 2 years before he offically blew up in Detriot. Also both those years in Minnesota, he actually did a very good job in limited minutes (his 3pt/ft) were very good, and he played pretty good d which also continued to improve. He also is very durable, never missing less than 70 games in a season and a lot of the times in the high 70's/low 80's.

Round 2 pick 42....Pau Gasol

Internationally, he led Spain to a 2006 FIBA championship, along with being the MVP of that team.

In the NBA, he has had since the age of 24, PER's of 22.5, 22.7, 24.1, and 21.6. Since being traded to LA however, his PER was back in the 24 range. During this time, he led a Memphis team devoid of other real talent to 50, 45, and 49 wins in a stacked Western Conference.

Gasol has a great post game, and can pass really well to find the open man. He can run the floor and slam it home in transition, and also has the length to really bother opponents with his shotblocking ability, averaging 1.8 bpg for his career.

Putting him with Pierce was easy. Gasol works really well with a superstar scorer, as we have seen with Kobe this year, and these two should mesh really well together on both ends of the floor.

Starting at age 24, Ray Allen had 9 seasons in a row with a PER of 20 or higher, averaged 23.2 ppg over those seasons. One of the best 3 pt shooters of the era, and a great FT shooter also. Career TS% of .571. Quite underrated as a defensive player, he won't be all-nba defesnive team, but can definitely hold his own at the SG position. Also, has shown the ability through his career to successfully be the #1 or #2 offensive option on a team, and known to be a great team player. A little bit of a decline this past year, but that is year 13 in the league for him.

Round 2 Pick 45 - Joe Dumars

Part of one of the best backcourts of all time, Joe Dumars gives you a player who is proven great at either the point or the 2-guard. A part of the legendary Bad Boys, Dumars was a great defensive guard which i still believe is the most important thing with this league. As can be seen with both my picks, Im going for good defenders who provide threats on the other end as well.

Through his prime (24-30) Dumars was always around the 19/5 mark with a career TS% of .554, very respectable numbers for someone known largely as a defender and had his numbers split with arguably one of the best PG's of all time.

Dumar's defensive prowess and versatility at either guard spot helps me along building a team that will be able to hurt others in many ways.

Round 2 Pick 46 - Gilbert Arenas

Having picked Mutombo in the first round, I felt that I needed to get a great offensive player in round 2. This is Gilbert Arenas' age-24 season: 29.3 ppg, 6.1 apg, 2.1 spg. He put up these gaudy stats without playing on a super fast-paced team (92.3 pace) and while maintaining very impressive efficieny (.581 TS%). Next year would be even better if you go by PER, as it rose from 23.8 to 24.0. He is a pretty good outside shooter, and is absolutely amazing at getting to the line for a PG. He doesn't have a great reputation for defense, but he does have good size for his position and has been in the top 10 in steals per game for three years in a row before his injury-marred 2007-2008. With Mutombo covering in the middle, I can afford a defender who gambles going for the steal.

The big concern is obviously the injuries. He is injury-prone, no way around it. Still, he has shown earlier in his career that he can come back from injuries as strong as ever. And 2007-2008 was the first time he had missed more the 35 games in a season. In fact, he had a 4 year stretch where he played 80+ games in 3 out of 4 seasons, so it's not like he doesn't have what it takes to withstand the grind an 82-game season. He even led the league in minutes played in his age-24 season. I think people overestimate his injury problems because injuries wiped away his most recent season. Looking at his body of work overall - yes, he is injury-prone, but no more so than tons of other stars past and present.

If he comes back at the same level of play he has displayed before his injury, or even close, I am getting the best offesive player available. And while I am statistically-minded and not sure if I believe in the concept of clutch, there is no denying that some players feel more comfortable than others taking the big shot at the end of games, and hardly anyone relishes being in that position more than Agent 0.

Achievements:

Top 5 in Offensive Win Shares 3 years in a row
Top 10 in ppg 3 years in a row
Top 10 in spg 3 years in a row
3-time All-Star
3-time All-NBA (3rd team twice, 2nd team once)

Round 2, Pick #47 - Dennis Rodman

Dennis Rodman is not only one of the very best defensive players of the last 30 years, he is also THE best rebounder in this time frame. In addition to his 5 rings (2 Pistons, 3 Bulls), he also has 7 rebounding titles (92-98) and was awarded defensive player of the year awards in both '90 and '91. He was also elected to the NBA All-Defensive team 10 times (7 first, 1 second, 2 third).

Rodman was a feisty defender who was very frustrating to play against as he always knew the right buttons to push on his opponents. He is also incredibly versatile as he had the ability to cover most players regardless of position (except small guards obv).

While his career RPG is only 13.1, it should be noted that his career RPG/36mins is 14.9 and his RPG once he became a full-time starter (89-90) is 15.1, which is by far tops for players in the modern era.

Round #2/Pick #48: Shawn Kemp

When it was around time for my first round pick, I was 50/50 on Hill vs. Kemp, then finally went on Hill. Now I get both. Sweet. Kemp was an amazing power forward, a guy who could flat out score. From the age of 24-27, Kemp posted TS% of .593%, .610%, .631%, and .583%. He had PERs above 20 for 5 out of 6 seasons. A very good rebounder who averaged over 10 per game for 6 straight seasons.

Pairing him with a great passer like Grant Hill is going to be scary for you guys. With these two, I'll be able to push the pace when it's necessary, and can also play in a half court set. Also, Kemp gives me a very good defender. He posted great defensive ratings (7 times with a DRtg of 100 or lower in the 8 seasons after he turned 24, in that same time span he had 7 seasons with DWS between 11.6 and 14.7).

I was literally shocked when I made the realization that I was going to get such a tremendous player. 6 time all-star, top 11 in MVP voting 4 times, a guy who can attack the glass on both ends. Oh and did I mention that only once in his first 11 seasons did he miss more than 8 games?

Round #2, Pick #49, Deron Williams

Deron is a young star that will continue to play his 80-82 games a year for many years, he is a big body PG, tough and very versatile. He can open the floor as well as run the half court set very well. He is the running mate for Marion.

Last year he shot over 50% from the field, 40% from 3 and 80% from the line, his TS% was .595. A point guard that can shoot the 3 makes Marion deadly. He was about a ~19/10.5 guy last year and is still just a baby showing a study upswing. His PER at 23 was 20.8 and is ORtg was 118. Key notes are these numbers will continue to rise in the next few years and he is a great compliment to Marion.

This season he was top 10 in offensive win shares, top 3 in assists and assists per game and all-nba 2nd team.

One thing to realize is that he went to The Colony High School and winners are bred from there, I know, we went to HS together--and look at me!

Round #2, Pick #50, Ben Wallace

With my second pick, I lock up the best defensive center of the decade. And perhaps not just C, maybe the best defender period of the 2000s. Ben Wallace was a cornerstone of the Pistons championship team & other great recent teams. He's a master of defending the post, blocking shots without fouling, and of course rebounding. He averaged over 11.3 boards & 2.2 blocks, leading the league once, and led the league in rebounds twice during a 6 season peak. Wallace managed all this despite being just 6' 9". He has incredible strength, toughness and intelligence in order to dominate in such a fashion.

Certainly not known for his scoring, a career avg of 6.5 ppg, its not really necessary when you lead the NBA in defensive rating for 3 straight years and defensive win shares for 5 straight. I think he makes a great complement to Iverson, as AI can gamble for steals all day knowing that Big Ben is clogging the lane.

Here are some of his many accomplished stats and awards:
Career averages of -
10.5 Rebounds
2.2 Blocks
1.3 Steals
94.2 defensive rating (3rd in NBA history)
19.3 rebound % (5th in NBA history)
91.5 win shares above avg
185.7 defensive win shares

4 time NBA Defensive Player of the Year (02,03,05,06)
4 time All-Star, lol not in 02, despite Def POTY
5 time All-Defensive 1st team
1 time All-Defensive 2nd team
3 time All NBA 2nd team
2 time All NBA 3rd team

Team fanmail so far: Allen Iverson, PG. Ben Wallace, C.
