I would much rather lebron get a ring than see boston win another

Personally I wasn't old enough to appreciate the real Lakers/Celtics rivalry so growing up I never really felt it. '08 Was cool as a throwback but I don't have a searing hatred for the Lakers base on what has been really only 2 high profile matchups with them in my lifetime. Sure it's a "rivalry" I guess but I always kind of liked Kobe and it seems like wasted energy to hate a team we could easily not face again in a big spot for another 20 years. The Heat are just so hateable on every level to me.

I don't really give a **** if somebody picks a different team every week.

The truest fans get the best emotional payoffs when good **** happens. I could have just ignored the C's until 2007 and then cheered them on to see a title, but it surely was far sweeter after spending 15 years rooting for AIDS and being desperate for a contender 1 time.

gonna be that much sweeter when the heat take a dump all over you bitches, where you will then crawl back into the obscurity of one liners and worn out lebron, bosh, and wade memes (bc those are always so lol haha hehe). and hide behind hedges and straw men you prepared for such a scenario.
Lol. And these mburke rants are even better in person. Legit disappointed I won't be watching game 6 at the house.

There was a kid I knew who was a huge Deion Sanders fan. Of course, he kept switching teams over and over again. So this kid kept switching teams when Deion did. Falcons, 9ers, Cowboys, Redskins. It was really annoying.

When the Heat walked off the floor following their Game 5 loss to the Celtics, a young boy repeated (sic) shouted "Good job! Good effort!", which was picked up by ESPN's microphones.

The video went viral via YouTube and Twitter in the hours to follow.

The Miami Herald found the boy, a nine-year-old from Coral Gables named Jack Meyer.

"For those people who thought I was being sarcastic, you're wrong," Meyer said on Wednesday. "I was being enthusiastic. I was saying the truth. I would never hurt the Heat's feelings like that."

The loss put Miami on the verge of elimination.

"Based on their expressions, they didn't seem happy being beaten by four points. I wanted to cheer them up," he said. "I really meant it."

Meyer appears to be an eternal Heat optimist.

"The Miami Heat are real winners. It doesn't matter if they win or lose. In my heart they win every single game," Meyer said. "In my heart, every year they get the championship."
Awwww

I've been a big Jason Kidd fan every since his rookie year. Kind of by accident. I ended up with all of his rookie cards and I thought his cards were cool, and he wowed me in the few games I saw him play that year. I was 12-13 btw.

Literally the only non-Chicago player in any sport I've been a "fan" of. It's been like that since 1994, and it all came from some dumb childhood reverence for sports cards.

Note that Garnett uses the plural "rings" in that video. No one is giving him grief for that.

I love Garnett.

Always liked him, but this year he reached a new level of gushy emo feelings.

Dude is just a warrior.

well he does preface it by saying "probably my best opportunity to win [inaudible] rings"

I don't really think that's such a bad thing to say plus he was 100% right

That's why.

In my mind, there's a pretty real distinction between being a fan of a team and being a fan of a specific player.

Fan of team: can happen at various points in one's life and develop in a myriad of ways. I myself grew up a Knick fan (although I lived in Jersey, the Nets were sololbad, but it's not like the Knicks were that good either), moved to LA, and "adopted" the Clippers (largely cause for season tickets, much cheaper than Lakers obvi). The hallmark trait, imo, of being a "fan of a team" is that once you become a fan, you stay with them through thick-and-thin.

Fan of player: I think the most common scenario is when a player you really like on your team gets traded/leaves as FA under non-douchey circumstances. Good examples for me are Eric Gordon or David Lee. I want these guys to do well and continue to have great careers. If I catch a Hornets/Woyas game, I'll root for them to win and play great. But the hallmark trait in this scenario is I want Gordon/Lee to do well wherever their careers take them. I don't suddenly invest in their entire new team's fortunes4lyfe, mainly b/c it requires too large an investment of time/caring about something. And I doubt most people would.

So I guess this is a long way of saying there is a difference between these 2 statements, imo:

1) I am a huge Heat fan.
2) I am a huge fan of Labron so I am rooting for the Heat to take it down.

Well, this is just being a fan of the "NBA in general" or "appreciating basketball being played at the highest level".

There are plenty of people that are just ardent fans of their team and very narrow in their focus. I think that's fine, and actually how most people (understandably) operate.

In general I like the Mavs b/c of Dirk but watching them win a championship is a TOTALLY different feeling than watching the Bucks win one (well, I'll let you know when it happens)

doesn't change the fact that he plays with a ton of heart + WIM

edit- now THAT is a haterish comment since the interaction can be boiled down to "KG has a positive quality" and you respond with "YEAH BUT HE ALSO HAS AN UNRELATED NEGATIVE QUALITY!" STFU bro, nobody cares.

It's like the intent of every single post you've made in this thread has been to rain on the C's parade. That doesn't add value, even if you occasionally do have a logically pertinent thing to say.

While I agree with you, why is your screen name JeremyLinFan, then? Shouldn't it be ClipperFan?
